Francis Scott Key Bridge (Outer Harbor Crossing) The Outer Harbor Crossing was the planning name for the 11-mile-long Baltimore Beltway toll facility between MD-10 and MD-151, and it includes the 1.6-mile-long Francis Scott Key Bridge over Baltimore Harbor. The southern, western, and northern portion of the I-695 Baltimore Beltway (with six or more lanes) was completed between MD-2 south of the city and US-40 northeast of the city by 1962. The beltway between US-40 and MD-151 at Edgemere was opened 1973. Actually, the design of the 2,644-foot-long central 3-span section of the bridge which has the overhead steel truss structure, is a combination design which includes elements of cantilever, steel truss, arch, and suspension, as most of the roadway length in the 1,200-foot-long main span is a plate girder structure suspended by cables from the steel cantilever arch structure. The two 722-foot-long back spans have the roadway structure integral with the steel truss structure. Key Bridge substructure contract An Engineering News-Record Key Bridge superstructure contract An Engineering News-Record Engineering News-Record magazine had a feature article about this bridge project, "Heavy-lift floating and traveling derricks team to erect truss bridge, January 15, 1976. The article cited Sidney Sherman, project engineer for Greiner Engineering Sciences, Inc., Baltimore, the company which designed the main truss and who was chief consultant to the state for the Key Bridge project, and he said that the company studied using a suspension bridge at the site but rejected that design because of high anchorage costs. He also said that the structure was the longest continuous truss bridge in the U.S.

Fitzgerald, Francis Scott Key
Fitzgerald, Francis Scott Key (1896-1940) was a star-spangled Princetonian of the Class of 1917. The poet Robert Browning once wrote that the legend inside his heart was ``Italy.'' With Fitzgerald it would probably have been ``Princeton.'' He entered this earthly paradise in the fall of 1913 from the Catholic Newman School in Hackensack, squeaking past his entrance examinations that September by the narrowest margin, and hurling himself into extracurricular activities with so much enthusiasm that he barely survived his first two years. After three months as a junior, he withdrew because of ill health and poor grades. Following nine months of rustication and recuperation at home in St. Paul, Minnesota, he re-entered as a beginning junior in the fall of 1916. He managed to complete that academic year and one month of his senior year before withdrawing again to enter Officers Training in October 1917. The fact that he was never graduated failed to expunge and indeed probably enhanced his golden memories of Princeton, Cottage Club, Princeton football, the Triangle Club, The Nassau Lit

Star Spangled Banner
(composed by Francis Scott Key, "In Defense of Fort McHenry" in September 1814. Congress proclaimed it the U.S. National Anthem in 1931 history follows.) Oh, say, can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro' the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watch'd, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof thro' the night that our flag was still there.
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
On the shore dimly seen thro' the mists of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes, What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep, As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses? Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam, In full glory reflected, now shines on the stream: 'T is the star-spangled banner: O, long may it wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

About Sponsors Staff Contact Us ... Transportation Search: Key, Francis Scott (1779-1843) Francis Scott Key Maryland Historical Society P oet, lawyer, district attorney, ardent Episcopalian, and anti-slavery advocate, Francis Scott Key is remembered as the author of the "Star-Spangled Banner," the national anthem of the United States. Key was a descendant of the Maryland Federalist elite of the colonial period and moved in elevated political circles for most of his life. During the War of 1812, Key suffered the rigors of battle first hand as a member of the District of Columbia militia and there found inspiration for his famous work. Key was successful in the legal field arguing cases before the Supreme Court and was appointed three times United States District Attorney for the District of Columbia. Family History
Francis Scott Key was born on August 1, 1779, in Frederick Maryland to John Ross Key (1754-1821) and Anne Phoebe Penn Dagworthy Charlton (1756-1830). His father was a successful planter who served under George Washington in the Revolutionary War. Key was much impressed by General Washington, who visited his father's estate to acknowledge and thank veterans from Frederick. He spent much of his youth living with relatives and attending school and college in Annapolis. Key graduated from St. John's College and began to practice law in Frederick in 1801. During school Key became life-long friends with one of his fellow students, Roger Brooke Taney, future Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court, who later married Key's only sister, Anne Phoebe Charlton Key (1783-1855).

(Photo ©Ron Solomon.) s part of her tour in July 1998, First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton spoke at the Francis Scott Key Monument of the significance of preserving sculpture for future generations. The Key Monument portrays the poet in bronze with a manuscript of the poem which was to become our national anthem, The Star-Spangled Banner . Bronze relief panels depict the bombardment of Fort McHenry, its guns and ramparts. Key himself stands in a marble boat, manned by a bronze sailor, perched atop the crest of a marble wave. The poet offers his manuscript to the allegorical bronze figure of Columbia. Brothers Charles and Theodore Marburg, members of a prominent Baltimore mercantile family, commissioned the sculpture. Prior to his death in 1907, Charles gave $25,000 to his brother to commission a monument to his favorite poet, Francis Scott Key. The French sculptor Marius Jean Antonin Mercie, then known for the Robert E. Lee (1890) equestrian bronze in Richmond, Virginia, and collaboration on General Lafayette (1891) in the District of Columbia, was selected to create the monument. The bronze figures of the Key Monument were phased into the Baltimore Bronze Preservation Project in 1984. Although periodic protective wax coatings over the past 15 years helped impede the deterioration of the bronzes, the monument did not receive comprehensive conservation treatment.

Francis Scott Key Bridge Fourteen years in the making, the final link in the Baltimore beltway (I-695) was finally finished in 1977. Crossing the Patapsco River from Hawkins Point to Soller Point, the Francis Scott Key Bridge arches over the Baltimore Harbor, reaching the height of a 36-story building. On a clear day you can see as far as Towson. Its name reflects its proximity to where Key watched the bombardment of Ft. McHenry, a view that inspired the Star Spangled Banner. Its steelwork has no expansion joints, making it the 2nd longest continuous truss in the United States. It is maintained by the Maryland Transportation Authority.
