Francis Scott Key
Francis Scott Key was a respected young lawyer living in Georgetown just west of where the modern day Key Bridge crosses the Potomac River (the house was torn down after years of neglect in 1947). He made his home there from 1804 to around 1833 with his wife Mary and their six sons and five daughters. At the time, Georgetown was a thriving town of 5,000 people just a few miles from the Capitol, the White House, and the Federal buildings of Washington. But, after war broke out in 1812 over Britian's attempts to regulate American shipping and other activities while Britain was at war with France, all was not tranquil in Georgetown. The British had entered Chesapeake Bay on August 19th, 1814, and by the evening of the 24th of August, the British had invaded and captured Washington. They set fire to the Capitol and the White House, the flames visible 40 miles away in Baltimore. President James Madison, his wife Dolley, and his Cabinet had already fled to a safer location. Such was their haste to leave that they had had to rip the Stuart portrait of George Washington from the walls without its frame! A thunderstorm at dawn kept the fires from spreading. The next day more buildings were burned and again a thunderstorm dampened the fires. Having done their work the British troops returned to their ships in and around the Chesapeake Bay.

KEY, Francis Scott , author, born in Frederick county, Md., 9 Aug., 1780 died in Baltimore, Md., 11 Jan., 1843, was the son of John Ross Key, a Revolutionary officer. He was educated at St. John's college, studied law in the office of his uncle, Philip Barton Key, and began to practice law in Frederick City, Md., but subsequently removed to Washington, where he was district attorney for the District of Columbia. When the British invaded Washington in 1814, Ross and Cockburn with their staff officers made their headquarters in Upper Marlboro, Md., at the residence of a planter, Dr. William Beanes, whom they subsequently seized as a prisoner. Upon hearing of his friend's capture, Key resolved to release him, and was aided by President Madison , who ordered that a vessel that had been used as a cartel should be placed at his service, and that John S. Skinner, agent for the exchange of prisoners, should accompany him. Gen. Ross finally consented to Dr. Beanes's release, but said that the party must be detained during the attack on Baltimore.

In 1813 the commander of Ft. McHenry asked for a flag so big that "the British have no trouble seeing it from a distance." He asked Mary Young Pickersgill to make the flag for him. Her thirteen year old daughter helped her. She used 400 yards of fine wool. They cut 15 stars that were two feet across. There were
8 red and 7 white stripes. The stripes were each two feet wide. When it was finished it measured 30 by 42 feet and cost $405.90.
During this time Francis Scott Key was a lawyer in Georgetown, just a few miles from Washington D.C. He and his wife Mary had 6 sons and 5 daughters.
In 1814, the British captured Washington and set the Capitol on fire. President James Madison and his wife Dolley had to leave the White House and run to a safer place.
After this attack, the Americans knew that Baltimore would be attacked next. The British had captured Mr. Key's friend. His name was William Beanes and he was a doctor. Key and another man set out to try to save Dr. Beanes' life. They told the British the doctor had helped to save British soldiers who had been wounded. They agreed to free him, but they wouldn't let them leave because the three men had overheard the British making plans to attack. So they were placed under guard on a British ship.
It was from this ship Francis Scott Key watched the bombing of Ft. McHenry. There was a lot of smoke and haze, but when daylight came, he could see the flag was still waving.

The dominant influences on F. Scott Fitzgerald were aspiration, literature, Princeton, Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald, and alcohol. Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, on September 24, 1896, the namesake and second cousin three times removed of the author of the National Anthem. Fitzgerald s given names indicate his parents pride in his father s ancestry. His father, Edward, was from Maryland, with an allegiance to the Old South and its values. Fitzgerald s mother, Mary (Mollie) McQuillan, was the daughter of an Irish immigrant who became wealthy as a wholesale grocer in St. Paul. Both were Catholics. s inheritance. Fitzgerald attended the St. Paul Academy; his first writing to appear in print was a detective story in the school newspaper when he was thirteen. During 1911-1913 he attended the Newman School, a Catholic prep school in New Jersey, where he met Father Sigourney Fay, who encouraged his ambitions for personal distinction and achievement. As a member of the Princeton Class of 1917, Fitzgerald neglected his studies for his literary apprenticeship. He wrote the scripts and lyrics for the Princeton Triangle Club musicals and was a contributor to the Princeton Tiger humor magazine and the Nassau Literary Magazine . His college friends included Edmund Wilson and John Peale Bishop. On academic probation and unlikely to graduate, Fitzgerald joined the army in 1917 and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the infantry. Convinced that he would die in the war, he rapidly wrote a novel

In 1814, Francis Scott Key wrote new words for a well-known drinking song, "To Anacreon in Heaven," to celebrate America's recent victory over the British. However, only in 1931, following a twenty-year effort during which more than forty bills and joint resolutions were introduced in Congress, was a law finally signed proclaiming "The Star Spangled Banner" to be the national anthem of the United States. The present copy, one of only five known to have been made by Key, is the earliest of four dating from the period 1840-1842 near the end of his life. Shown here is a copy of the first printed edition combining words and music one of only ten copies known to exist.

"Terra Rubra" (Latin for "red land") because of its red clay soil. The plantation covered 3,000 acres of forests, fields, and streams and was a beautiful place to grow up. Francis’s father, John Key, was a judge who traveled from town to town to listen to court cases.
Key’s Uncle Philip introduced him to a young woman named Mary Taylor Lloyd. Key nicknamed her "Polly" and enjoyed writing poetry for her. In 1800, Key became a lawyer and set up his practice in Frederick, Maryland. In 1802, he and Polly got married and soon after moved to Washington, D.C., where Uncle Philip had invited Francis to be his law partner.
The United States declared war on Great Britain on June 18, 1812, after many arguments about trade during a war between Great Britain and France. After the British defeated France in early1814, they attacked the United States. In August of 1814, British soldiers burned the White House, the Capitol Building, and the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. Then they tried to capture Baltimore.
During the battle, the three men stayed in the cabin of their boat, except for when Key occasionally emerged to look for the American flag over Fort McHenry. Seeing the flag there meant the Americans were still in control. During the stormy night, Key emerged again to look for the flag. It was wet and drooping, but it was still there. Early the next morning, both the battle and the rain were over when Key looked out again. The American flag was still flying over Ft. McHenry. Against all odds, the United States had won the battle.

O say, does that star spangled banner still wave
On the shore, dimly seen through the mist of the deep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
In full glory reflected, now shines in the stream.
And where is that band which so vauntingly swore,
No refuge could save the hireling and salve
From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave.
And the star spangled banner in triumph shall wave While the land of the free is the home of the brave. Oh, thus be it ever when freeman shall stand Blest with victory and peace, may the heaven-rescued land, Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation. Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just, And the star spangled banner in triumph shall wave While the land of the free is the home of the brave.

Word soon reached Francis Scott Key that the British had carried off an elderly and much loved town physician of Upper Marlboro, Dr. William Beanes, and was being held on the British flagship TONNANT. The townsfolk feared that Dr. Beanes would be hanged. They asked Francis Scott Key for his help, and he agreed, and arranged to have Col. John Skinner, an American agent for prisoner exchange to accompany him.

Francis Scott Key
In August 1814 Francis Scott Key, a respected young lawyer living in Georgetown, Virginia, found that his friend, Dr. William Beanes was taken captive by the British army soon after it's departure from Washington. Francis left Georgetown for Baltimore to obtain the services of Colonel John Skinner, the government's prisoner of war exchange agent.
The war at Fort McHenry had just begun, and the British had taken American prisoners. Francis and John sailed on a truce ship and met the British fleet. Francis successfully negotiated the doctor's release, but was detained with John Skinner and Dr. Beanes by the British until after the attack on Baltimore. Francis' vessel was eight miles below the fort during the bombardment on Fort McHenry, which was in Baltimore Maryland, under the watchful eye of a British warship.
From this site, Francis Scott Key witnessed the British attack on the fort, after which he was inspired to write the words to "The Star Spangled Banner."
Oh, say can you see, by the dawn's early light, what so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous flight, o'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming? And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. O say, does that Star-Spangled Banner yet wave o'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep, Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes, What is that which breeze o'er the towering steep, As it fitfully blows, now conceals, now discloses? Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam, in full glory reflected now shines on the stream: 'Tis the Star-Spangled Banner! O long

F(rancis) Scott (Key) Fitzgerald (1896-1940) American short-story writer and novelist, known for his depictions of the Jazz Age (the 1920s). With the glamorous Zelda Sayre (1900-48), Fitzgerald lived a colorful life of parties and money-spending. At the beginning of one of his stories Fitzgerald wrote the rich "are different from you and me". This privileged world he depicted in such novels as THE BEAUTIFUL AND DAMNED (1922) and THE GREAT GATSBY (1925), which is widely considered Fitzgerald's finest novel. "It was my first inkling that he was a writer. And while I like writers - because if you ask a writer anything, you usually get an answer - still it belittled him in my eyes. Writers aren't people exactly. Or, if they're any good, they're a whole lot of people trying so hard to be one person. It's like actors, who try so pathetically not to look in mirrors. Who lean backward trying - only to see their faces in the reflecting chandeliers." (from The Last Tycoon
