Plot
  • As with Slaughterhouse Five , you need to make a Gliederung or chapter-by-chapter outline of main events.
  • In particular, throughout the course of the book, you need to trace Chief Broom's progress towards sanity; this is the main thread of the whole plot. What are the various stages he goes through? Find the important incidents that show him taking steps out of his defenses.
  • Another way to look at the plot is through the pattern of Campbell's hero's quest. (This works best for Mac as hero.) How does the novel enact the various stages of the hero's journey?
  • Character
  • Chief Bromden is the narrator. How does seeing things through the Chief's eyes change the book? What does the Chief's perspective add to McMurphy's perspective? (How is book different from the movie?)
    • Can you trust the Chief's perceptions? What are his most typical distortions? In what terms/ metaphors does he see reality?
    • Is the Chief really crazy? How is he perhaps sane seeing a deeper truth?

He moved with his family in 1946 to Springfield, Oregon, where he spent several years on the family farm. During high school and later in college, Kesey was a champion wrestler, setting long-standing state records in Oregon. He graduated from the University of Oregon with a degree in speech and communications. He also received a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship to enroll in the creative writing program at Stanford. While at Stanford, he participated in experiences involving hallucinogenic chemicals at the psychology department to earn extra money. These chemicals included psilocybin, mescaline and LSD. It was this experience that fundamentally altered Kesey, personally and professionally. Kesey published One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest in 1962. The novel was an immediate critical and popular success. It was adapted into a successful stage play and a 1975 film.

Ken Kesey
A successful novelist in his own right, Kesey is often cited as a livewire that connects and electrifies some of the most creative personalities in the beat and hippie worlds. Awarded a fellowship in '58, Ken Kesey enrolls in Stanford's creative writing program. In his Palo Alto home, he begins writing a novel about the beat scene in nearby San Francisco, and meets many influential beat figures. In 1960, he volunteers to participate in Army tests of mind-altering drugs at the VA hospital. He begins stealing LSD, and inviting friends to try acid at his home. By spring, Kesey works in the hospital's mental wards, where he finds inspiration for One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest . With his profits, Kesey moves to the hills above Palo Alto, where the acid-tests grow more experimental. Hunter S. Thompson, renowned for his own brand of insanity, calls it "the world capital of madness."

A FAN’S NOTES:
Kesey Was Never Easy
by Paul Pintarich Some years ago, when I was book review editor for a major Northwest newspaper, I happened to mention to a young woman, a publicist for a New York publisher, that I was soon to visit Ken Kesey and discuss his then latest novel, the unfortunate “Sailor Song.” To my surprise, the woman responded naively, “Ken Kesey. . . Oh, is he out there now?” Oh yes, I affirmed, explaining once again to another parochial New Yorker that we could claim Kesey as one of our own, and that literature and its practitioners did manage to thrive in the rude, unlettered expanses west of the Hudson River. Now, however, after the death of the popular Oregon author and 60s cult figure, I have reconsidered the young publicist’s comment, and allow that identifying Kesey has never been easy. In all the years of our acquaintance, reading his work and following his life’s good and bad weather, I’m not sure I ever gained a firm handle on the man. Part of the problem, it seems, is that despite two indisputable masterpieces, “One Flew Over the Cuckoo‘s Nest” (1962), and “Sometimes a Great Notion” (1964), both set in Oregon, he is acknowledged less as a writer of literature than as leader of the itinerant, LSD-fueled “Merry Pranksters,” a now rather tiresome manifestation of the “hippie generations” chronicled in Tom Wolfe’s non-fiction book, “The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test.”

Ken Kesey... Further Along
And Still Testing the Reality of It
Ken Kesey on his Oregon farm, November 1979.
K en Kesey dead? Who they tryin' to kid? That can't be Kesey they wheeled away from Sacred Heart in Eugene, Oregon, last November, like hauling off the corpse of some lobotomized savior in a movie about lunatics. Kesey was much bigger than that. Younger. Louder. Handsomer too. Looked kind of like Paul Newman, some said, before Kesey lost his hair, and that middle-age spread set in. And those handsfolded like doves' wings as some orderly rolled him away, no doubt. Listen up. I knew those hands. They contained worlds, man. They bled two novels onto the page that may never be surpassed. Read 'em and weep. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and Sometimes A Great Notion . Brassy, voluptuous, tender and, yes, sometimes vulgar books, not what you'd call PC at all. Yet subtle too. Subtle as voices of doves. Subtle as new moons and heat lightning. Ah, what Kesey could do with voice and perspective. He proffered gifts and notions that made him a writer's writer. That first bookpublished in 1962made you want to give up reading and writing, except for the haunting idea that lightning might strike again. Read on. Write on.
