Katharine Kerr was born in Cleveland, Ohio , and given the name Nancy Brahtin. She describes her family feeling more like "British-in-exile" than American. She describes her inability to spell properly using either the British or American systems as a result of having been taught to read solely with British books. While still a schoolgirl, her family moved to Santa Barbara, California . Katharine was horrified to discover first that no major league baseball teams existed there yet (baseball being a great passion of hers along with reading and cats), and then that beaches were considered more important in Southern California than books. In 1962, she moved to the San Francisco Bay Area , eventually moving to San Francisco itself. She spent time studying at

Daggerspell by Katharine Kerr
Prince Galrion is arrogant, used to getting his own way and so taken with the dweomer (magic) that he defies his father and runs off leaving his betrothed Brangwen to her fate. Only when it is too late does he find out that his destiny (wyrd) was to study with Brangwen for her gift was just as strong as his. In a moment of foolishness, he vows not to die until he has set things right. Over the centuries Galrion, having taken the name, Nevyn, seeks the spirit of his beloved, reborn in the world to try to untangle her wyrd from the spirit that was her brother, Garraent and the other man who loved her, Blaen.
This is one of my favorite books of all time. It is the first book in a series. The story line does move between the different time periods so you will find the table of incarnations in the back very useful. There is also one on her website: deverry.com.

ANNOUCEMENT: The Spirit Stone , the second book in the "Silver Wyrm" set and the next to the last Deverry book, is now available from DAW Books in hardcover and HarperCollins UK in trade paper. Some of you may be wondering what happened to the British hardcovers. I know that many readers collected those. Unfortunately, someone in the marketing department of HarperCollins decided that they weren't "cost effective" and downgraded the remaining books in the series. My editor did her best to convince them otherwise, but in vain.
Read an excerpt from The Spirit Stone A number of people now have sent me email about a Deverry book they've seen advertised as The Black Stone . This book does not exist. The title you're looking for is The Spirit Stone Along with Kate Elliott and other authors, I have started a new group blog.

    Snare
    by Katharine Kerr
    reviewed by William Thompson
Taking a hiatus from her under-appreciated Deverry Westlands Dragon Mage series, the author turns to stand-alone space fantasy. Though science fictional elements remain secondary to her usual interest in story and character development, as well as world-building in a decidedly fantastic vein, the former possesses enough prominence as a frame to lend this work an identity similar to some of the writings of Marion Zimmer Bradley, Anne McCaffrey or Sharon Shinn, though the author remains overall the more competent writer.
    The Fire Dragon
    by Katharine Kerr
    reviewed by William Thompson
This is, without doubt, one of the better, more intelligently written high fantasy series currently in progress, and also one of the most ignored and undervalued. This volume is but the 11th book in the sequence. It seems a shame that fantasy audiences, at least in America, have chosen to overlook this more original and inventive work. Here you'll find no characters with over-blown powers, or beauty so overwrought as to make grown men weep. No femme fatales in red leather body suits or warriors capering about as half-disguised samurai. Cultural borrowings are not baldly daubed onto a medieval architecture, mercenaries aren't mimicking G.I. Joe, and the story is not simply a quest by any other name set within a new (or already well familiar) landscape.

    Katharine Kerr
(Used with friendly permission from Katharine Kerr) Katharine Kerr was born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1944 to a family which considered itself British-in-exile far more than American. Since she was taught to read on British books alone, these sentiments resulted in her inability to spell properly in either system, British or American, though fortunately there were no other lasting effects.
Just to compound the culture shock, the family moved to Santa Barbara, California, when Katharine was a schoolgirl. Already an avid baseball fan, her first reaction to the move was horror at discovering that the state had no major league teams, as the Giants and the Dodgers had yet to arrive. Her second reaction was an even greater horror upon realizing that in Southern California beaches are far more important than books. She vowed to leave as soon as possible, carrying out the threat in 1962, when she moved to the San Francisco Bay Area. Since then, she has left it only to visit relatives in the British Isles and currently lives in San Francisco itself.
After dropping out of Stanford University in the mid-Sixties to join several of the revolutions then in progress, Katharine worked at a number of low-paying jobs, including a stint in the Post Office, while she read extensively in the fields of classical archaeology and literature, Medieval and Dark Ages history, and modern fiction. (She can muddle along in Latin and several modern languages, including the speech of rock-and-roll musicians.) She lived with a number of cats and of course, attended baseball games. Eventually she had the good fortune to meet up with an old friend from secondary school, Howard Kerr, who loves cats, books, and baseball as much as she does. They were married in 1973.

22 March 2004 W hat is the future of religion? For centuries probably for far longer, perhaps for as long as the existence of the human record answers to this question have tended to fall into one of two camps: either it will always be with us, a part of our humanity, or else we'll outgrow it. Katharine Kerr's Snare These situations give the story its beginning, and drive its shape before long, it becomes a quest, and quite explicitly so; Zayn is even given an official quest token by Ammadin, to put on his horse's bridle. The quest, however, has some unexpected twists and turns, brought about by a number of factors ranging from the mysterious and evidently violent ChaMeech to the forgotten origins of humanity's presence on this planet so thoroughly forgotten that most of them believe they blew over from the next continent, not the next galaxy. There are, of course, bits of evidence scattered about to illustrate that this is not the case, but it takes Ammadin's intelligence and Zayn's sheer bloody-mindedness to get it all figured out. The major strength of Snare is its characters, who are absolutely convincing. Horse-riding nomads have been a staple of the genre at least since Tolkien's Rohirrim galloped into

One of my daughters is currently completely obsessed with the Lemony Snicket My other daughter is similarly obsessed with the Daisy Meadows Rainbow Magic Fairy books . Now, this series is a real racket. The books are all slim (Horrid Henry thickness) and have more or less identical plots, and there are fucking forty So I understand how from the outside something can seem strange, obsessive, and a little bit silly. That Lord of the Rings film sequence, I thought, revealed the utter tripe lying at the heart of that book, which I have read many, many times. Being immersed in the book: great. Watching it on film? Embarrassing. The Gold Falcon was - or so I thought - going to be the last, but it seems that she had too much material, so there appear to be two more in the offing. All the fantasy elements are here. Swords, sorcery, men and women, elves somewhat instead of something and it gladdens my heart instead of (well, it all helps the word count, no doubt).
