quotes from bohemian ink
"Over the Oakland Bay Bridge I slept soundly for the first time since Denver; so that I was rudely jolted in the bus station at Market and Fourth into the memory of the fact that I was three thousand two hundred miles from my aunt's house in Paterson, New Jersey. I wandered out like a haggard ghost, and there she was, Frisco - long, bleak streets with trolley wires all shrouded in fog and whiteness. " On the Road This webpage is presented by Dan K. Experience the City that inspired literary legend Jack Kerouac!
During the summer of 2007 Lowell will be infused with the energy of the Beats: spoken word and poetry readings, live jazz, public art, theatrical performances, animated tours of Kerouac’s city haunts, a waffle ball tournament near Kerouac Park, art exhibits, and the signature exhibit of one of the most valuable literary manuscripts of all time. Kerouac’s original On the Road scroll manuscript will be on display at the Boott Cotton Mills Museum of the Lowell National Historical Park starting June 15, and will run through October 14, 2007. The exhibit will coincide with the 50th anniversary of the publication of On the Road, recognized as one of the classic novels of modern American literature. The event kicks off on June 15th, 2007 with the exhibition opening celebration from 6-9pm. This article was written by Matt Miller Jack Kerouac Books satori - Pronunciation:

n. Zen. sudden enlightenment. In 1957, Jack Kerouac, a French Canadian kid from the mill-town of Lowell, Massachusetts, published his second novel, On the Road Behind us lay the whole of America and everything I had previously known about life...We had finally found a magic land at the end of the road and we never had dreamed the extent of the magic. Kerouac was hardly the first to create a work of inspirational travel. America itself has had a long tradition of literary travel. Huck Finn, Hiawatha, and Ishmael are all testaments to such tradition. These works show that the reason behind such travel is not necessarily the prize of arrival but the experience of the journey itself. And yet, while following in such literary tradition, Kerouac broke away from previous such works in that he wrote from, and of, a setting more intimately and uniquely American than rivers and oceans and forests. This setting was the American highway. Advertisement:
Nowhere in the world is there such a criss-crossed intricate web of comings and goings than on the American highway. Nowhere else can a person drive away from an Atlantic Coast fishing town on Monday and be wading in the warm surf that rolls in just beyond the Pacific Coast Highway by Friday, and en route see the mass multicultural strangeness of the United States. No check-points and no papers of passage required. The whole country is a breathing expectant free road mother of creation. Interstates and routes, city streets and suburban avenues–they all cut across the land in long asphalt scars connecting the Atlantic to the Pacific and Canada to Mexico. And in between is the beauty of chaos and commonality inherent in the American late summer afternoon. In

Jack Kerouac’s Roads Jack Kerouac's On the Road is one of the most controversial American novels of the 20th century. When critics concede that the book and its author were instrumental in triggering the rucksack revolution, this is to damn with praise, as Kerouac is reduced to a one-book author (though he published some twenty volumes containing a wide range of prose and poetry). Moreover, the spiteful acknowledgement of a sociohistorical fact imports an aesthetic grudge against a novel that a close reading reveals to be far more conventional than most of its adversaries would would care to realize. Nor does the book propagate the shameless adoration of libidinous licentiousness for which it has been castigated in conservative quarters. Kerouac, too, never understood what his book meant to the hordes of youngsters taking to the highways after the fashion of the characters peopling the narrative; but then, he was ill-fitted to grasp what his book had kindled in generations of young readers who felt stifled by the limitations of their parental homes. He never realized that he had prefigured their longings. Jack, who claimed he had completed his first novel at age eleven, had written for his high-school paper, contributed articles on local college sports to the Columbia

On the Road
Jack Kerouac
"On the Road" is a novel that makes the reader want to go out there, seize the day, and live, live, live! Jack Kerouac, creator of the "beat generation" best sums up his philosophy as "everything belongs to me because i am poor". The failure of ideology and of the American Dream in the 1960s gave young dreamers who were eager to live just one way out: the road.

Jack Kerouac's Last House; St. Petersburg, Florida
Jack moved many, many times in his life. After his father died, he and his mother kept moving between New England, Florida, and California. A classic case of the grass is greener elsewhere, but when you get there, all your problems came with you. Jack and his mother (and I think wife Stella) first lived in the house on the right, 5155 10th Avenue North, from 1964 to 1966. After living in NE again for awhile, they came back and bought the house next door, 5169, in 1968. Only about a year later, Jack was rushed out of the front door that you see, never to return. He died the next day in the hospital, October 20, 1969.
The old man is me, Paul Verizzo, and the pretty young woman is my youngest daughter, Alexa. Pictures taken in March of 2003.
The house is still owned by John Sampas (as of 3/2003), brother-in-law and executor of Jack's estate. See the tax information from Pinellas County.
