How Late It Was, How Late
    Author Info: James Kelman
It was just a new problem. He had to cope with it, that's all, that was all it was. Every day was a
f***ing problem. And this was just a new yin. So ye thought it out and then ye coped. That was
what a problem was, a thing ye thought out and then coped with, and ye pushed ahead; green fields
round every corner, sunshine and blue skies, streets lined with apple trees and kids playing in the
grass, the good auld authorities and the headman up there in his wee central office, good auld god
with the white beard and the white robe, sitting there watching ye from above, the gentle wee smile,
leading the children on. That was fair enough. It was just the now. It was this minute here. That
was all; once ye got through it ye were past it.
-James Kelman How Late It Was, How Late Such is the attitude which sustains Sammy, the Glaswegian ex-con who is the hero of this profane tale. A good thing too, because as the novel opens he has more than your usual share of problems. He's just woken from a two day drinking binge, of which he remembers little. He precipitates a fight with some soldiers who administer a beating and wakes up blind. He returns to his apartment to find his girlfriend Helen missing. And the police bring him in for questioning about some of his criminal mates and about some of the activities, which he can't recall, of the past several days. That's a lot to cope with.

Variant issue12 www.variant.org.uk variantmag@btinternet.com back to issue list A conversation with James Kelman
In September 1999 the first new play by James Kelman for five years was ready for production on a profit-share basis by a small Glasgow-based company, the actor Gary Lewis had already committed to it. At the time Kelman was joint holder of the Scottish Writer of the Year award. Edinburgh's Traverse Theatre was the first venue approached. It was Kelman's choice; during past years three of his own plays and one of his translations have been produced there. The Traverse requested that in the first instance Kelman should submit the play for consideration by the "literature committee". He replied to the effect that he didn't do auditions these days. The Traverse insisted so he withdrew the play and wrote to the Scottish Arts Council to express his feelings about the situation.
This is an informal conversation, more than an interview, recorded in late August 2000, which reveals something of what it is to be a writer working in Scotland.

Born in Glasgow, the son of a picture-restorer and framemaker, he was one of five brothers. He left school at 15 to become an apprentice compositor, but gave this up two years later when his family emigrated to the United States. However, he soon returned and fell into a series of dead-end jobs, as described in his fiction, interspersed with long periods of unemployment, during which he was an avid reader. After spending just over two years at Strathclyde University, where he was dissatisfied with the philosophy course on which he had embarked, he determined that he would become a writer. In 1983, he published Not not while the giro
