2. A Brief Overview of Kelman and His Work
James Kelman is a Glaswegian author who writes about Glasgow life and uses relevant language styles to represent it. Kelman aims to write about experiences from his own community using the language of his home, culture, and the Glaswegian working-class (Ledbetter, 1995: 9; Turner, 1997: 24; Winder, 1994: 18 How Late It Was, How Late , is written using a combination of Glaswegian and English, and is a protest novel referring to ongoing social issues for Glasgow working-class (Ledbetter, 1995: 9) The reason why Kelman focuses on Scottish experiences is because he perceives his situation to be colonised (Bantick, 1997: 8; Chollet, 1995: 3) He believes his culture is being suppressed and he is conscious of the long history of poor living conditions for many Glaswegians (McIlvanney, 1999).

Chapter one defines localist literature through the prism of Joyce's and Flann O'Brien's formal experiments and critiques of nationalism exclusive of working-class voices. I read Dilly Dedalus in Ulysses The Commitments , turning to the strategic use of nostalgia as a device to assert a local identity continuous with, rather than venerating of, a nationalist past. Chapter four examines the anorexic/bulimic aesthetic of Galloway's The Trick Is to Keep Breathing and the explorations of femaleness and Scottishness in Foreign Parts . Chapter five considers the relationship of youth culture to formulations of national identity, in particular in Welsh's novel

Volume Five, December 2004 home articles Gabriela Nistor
While searching the terms paranoia and paranoiac in specialized dictionaries and medical treatises, I suddenly found myself at a loss, as the variety of syndromes and manifestations is so wide, that the reader may well wonder, at the end, whether his own behaviour can be described as normal or abnormal. We may as well wonder whether all these umbrella terms have been invented by the medical science in order to find an excuse for whatever we believe to be deviant in our own social behaviour, or the human behaviour itself can be characterized by so many slippery or hidden meanders that few individuals can actually escape being labelled as paranoiacs.
Writers, either great or minor, have built, along the time, a whole gallery of paranoic characters, and I would quote great masters of literary portrayal, from Dostoyevsky to Joyce, and from Virginia Woolf to Kafka or Marin Preda, whose characters fight against uncommon individual, social or political problems.
Although never individualized as such and however great the tribute these characters have to pay to a particular literary epoch or context, their minds bear the imprint of a deviant destiny and a distorted way of perceiving the outer world.
