James Patrick Kelly Wins Nebula!
Wednesday, June 6th, 2007 in new media literature I interviewed James Patrick Kelly, science fiction writer, recent Nebula winner, and NH resident, for The Wire . Here is a snippet of my article entitled, Truth is Stranger Than Science Fiction: New Hampshire author takes the Nebula Award New Hampshire writer James Patrick Kelly recently received the Nebula Award for his novella “Burn.” The science fiction writer joins the ranks of previous winners Frank Hebert, Isaac Asimov and Neil Gaiman. Hearing the beat of a different drummer, Kelly released his Walden-inspired science fiction book as a free podcast just as the book hit retail shelves. The action that might have seemed crazy to traditional publishers gave an otherwise small-print book the opportunity to develop a wide readership. According to the author, the whole thing was an experiment that turned out really well. He is now being called a pioneer. James Patrick Kelly on DRM
p2pnet.net - the original daily p2p and digital media news site : "DRM is all-but useless. Just about everyone agrees on that - except the people who are trying to get rich on it, of course, and the entertainment industry, which is trying to convince itself that it actually works as a form of product protection, and ....
But you know how it goes.
Sci-fi author Jim Kelly wondered if DRM schemes are hurting his career.
'The way I see it, readers and rep are what really matter to a writer. Dollars should follow from a satisfied readership, although exactly how this happens in these times of technological and economic innovation is not immediately apparent, alas,' he writes in an Asimov's Science Fiction post, going on:

53. John Kessel / James Patrick Kelly OmniVisions Interview
Transcript of an online interview with sf writers John Kessel james patrick KellyConnie Willis.

conducted May 8, 1997
Jim Freund: Welcome to OmniVisions. Our guests online tonight are sf writers James Patrick Kelly and John Kessel. Welcome, Jim and John! Both of you have just written works with saurian references. Would you each (perhaps Jim first) tell us a bit about them? John Kessel: Glad to be here. Jim Kelly: Actually, dinosaurs have been such good luck for me, that I have to try to ration my use of them. They're inherently science fictional and they call up my little boy sense of wonder. There's also something about dinosaurs that speaks to something that remains deep in our mammalian brains. Maybe we're still worried that if they ever come back, we're toast. Kessel: CORRUPTING DR. NICE has a rich paleontologist in it, who returns from the Cretaceous period with an infant specimen of a new species of apatosaurus. Dinosaurs are of course a staple of time travel stories, so that was one reason I brought one in. My other reason was that the story is modeled on the screwball comedies of the 1930s. Many of them have animal used for comic purposes . . . the leopard in BRINGING UP BABY, the snake in THE LADY EVE, the dog in THE AWFUL TRUTH. So I thought a dinosaur would add a new wrinkle to that old standard. JF: Fair enough. Jim, tell us a bit of the premise of "Think Like a Dinosaur", and John, just how many times have you seen "The Lady Eve".

A review by David Soyka Feeling Very Strange is the second "please don't call us science fiction or fantasy" anthology of the summer. Unlike the "new wave fabulists" in Paraspheres Indeed, a unique feature of this anthology is the inclusion of transcripts from Chronoautic Log, the blog of David Moles, in which folks debate what the hell slipstream might be. Particularly funny is when participants decide to start their own movement, "infernokrusher." As Benjamin Rosenbaum puts it, "We must now all swear to a solemn vow to say everywhere with a straight face, 'Slipstream? Never heard of it. Do you know about infernokrusher fiction, though. Exciting new movement.' We can do this, people."

James Patrick Kelly - Jack of Genres by Jeremiah Tolbert Where have you come from, and where are you going? I was born in Mineola, New York and lived in bedroom towns around NYC until I left home for college. I've lived in New Hampshire since 1975 and intend to petition the Secretary of State to make me a native one of these days. I hope to drop dead writing - but not anytime soon. I have this vision of the last thing that anyone ever hears from me is what happens when my forehead hits the keyboard as;dlkfas[dpfqmwertq0tqwt0iqrt5 What was the inspiration for the title of your latest anthology, Strange, But Not a Stranger? I am a big Talking Heads fan. If you are too, then you know. The afterword of your latest collection mentions that you have written several plays based on your short fiction. Could you share with us some of your experiences crossing over from the world of genre writing into theatre? What have you liked and disliked about working in these areas? I like most everything about the theater. I like the collaboration of talented artists across various disciplines and the community that inevitably forms among the cast of a project. I've been personally involved in many of the productions of my work. And yes, I especially like the applause, since writers very rarely get that kind of visceral feedback. I guess the only thing I don't like is how evanescent theater is. I hate watching great performances evaporate. You can reprint a story or a novel, but you can never duplicate a performance. You can only recreate it.

"Mother" by James Patrick Kelly
I've been friends with Jim Kelly for many years, and have even been declared by him his "most deranged fan", since I have a nearly-complete collection of his works, including all of his books and all of his earliest stories (the ones he'd like to forget). To be fair, he has lots of my early work, too, things I wrote when I was in grade school, and which he vows to keep as blackmail material should I ever decide to show anyone his early publications.
"Mother" is the only story I've read so far in what looks to be a particularly strong original anthology, The Silver Gryphon , which commemorates the twenty-fifth publication from Golden Gryphon Press . I have a special love for Golden Gryphon, as they published the first large collection of Jim's stories, Think Like a Dinosaur (now, finally, reprinted as a trade paperback).
The qualities that make Jim Kelly special are his sensitivity and virtuosity. Many writers have one or the other, but few combine depth of humanity with an open willingness to try new forms, new themes, new ideas. The risks are great, particularly for short story writers. If you invest months of work on a story, stretching your own boundaries while maintaining your own integrity as an artist, you aren't likely to see a huge pay-off. There is a devoted group of readers for short fiction, but it's a small group, and within that group, the fraction which appreciates the amount of work that has gone into the story can be tiny. Not every Kelly story works for me there are times when I think his humanity and compassion veer into sentimentality, or times when I think his virtuosity makes him cut corners on the humanity but when he gets the tricky balance right, the result is as good as anything published under the labels of "science fiction" or "fantasy" at any time.
