He had promised to bring her a new suite of wallscapes, which was good because there was only so much of colliding galaxies and the Sistine Chapel a girl could take. For the past nine weeks she had been cycling her walls through the sixteen million colors they could display. Used with permission. James Patrick Kelly has had an eclectic writing career. He has written novels, short stories, essays, reviews, poetry, plays, and planetarium shows. His books include Burn Strange But Not A Stranger Think Like a Dinosaur and Other Stories Wildlife ... Freedom Beach (1986), and Planet of Whispers (1984). His fiction has been translated into sixteen languages. He has won the Hugo Award twice: in 1996, for his novelette "Think Like A Dinosaur" and in 2000, for his novelette, "10 to 1." He writes a column on the Internet for Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine and is on the faculty of the Stonecoast Creative Writing MFA Program at the University of Southern Maine. In 2004 he was appointed by the Governor of New Hampshire to be the Chair of the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts. Victoria McManus: Why do you write science fiction? When did you first connect with other genre writers, and how did that help or not help you? James Patrick Kelly: I went to Clarion Damon Knight Kate Wilhelm Joe Haldeman , and Thomas Disch and fellow students like Bruce Sterling Eileen Gunn Leslie What , and Cynthia Felice . This may come as a surprise to recent acquaintances but I was a shy boy when I first started out; one of the things that attracted me to the field was the sense of community. I was very much taken with the idea that SF was in some sense a common enterprise that many writers participated in. I've always thought that while it was important to do my best work, it was almost as important to help make sure that the best and most artistically ambitious writers in our genre be read and recognized. If SF is known primarily for its hackwork, then we've lost our way.

T he best of James Patrick Kelly's short stories verge on the surreal while remaining firmly based in plausible speculations and extrapolations from the present. Kelly depicts a world where the human quest for difference generates a seemingly endless array of gangs, cults, and subcultures, each struggling to distinguish itself through various forms of body modifications. He shows us a place where divorced fathers create androids to make up for the children they have lost, where the design of drugs has become an art and their marketing a big business. He takes us to a frightening time, just a few years from now, where aging baby boomers cower in their apartments, afraid to leave, because the streets belong to the young, who are enraged to have inherited a world of diminished options and depleted resources. After graduating from the University of Notre Dame, Kelly worked as a proposal writer and P.R. man for a Massachusetts-based architectural firm. Since 1977 he has been a full time science fiction writer. Many science fiction fans first became aware of Kelly's talents when his story, "Solstice," was included in Bruce Sterling's landmark

JAMES PATRICK KELLY BURNS ON THE PLANK
What do I know about Jim Kelly ? He’s a great writer, with a body of short stories that I would have killed to write. I know he’s fun to hang out with. I know he’s painstakingly considerate to and yet honest with his students at Clarion. Not only does he know a lot about writing, but he knows how to convey that knowledge to others. I hate to get all mushy, but it’s nice when a great writer turns out to be a great human being, too.
Now he has a new novel, Burn , out from Tachyon Press. It’s intelligent, thoughtful, and provocative. On the Tachyon site they summarize it as follows:
The tiny planet of Morobe's Pea has been sold, and the new owner has a few ideas. He has renamed it Walden, and voluntary simplicity is now the rule. It will become a rural paradise for everyone who embraces Thoreau’s philosophy.

BIO
Jim has had an eclectic writing career. He has written novels, short stories, essays, reviews, poetry, plays and planetarium shows. His novels include PLANET OF WHISPERS, (1984), FREEDOM BEACH with John Kessel (1985), LOOK INTO THE SUN (1989), and WILDLIFE (1994). He has published two short story collections, HEROINES (1990) and THINK LIKE A DINOSAUR AND OTHER STORIES (1997) which is hot off the presses from Golden Gryphon and which would make a wonderful gift for your brother, or maybe your cousin Betty. He has written more than forty stories, which have been translated into eleven languages. He has won the ASIMOV'S SCIENCE FICTION MAGAZINE Readers' Awards four times. On the other hand, he's been nominated for the Nebula a bunch of times, but has never won. On the third hand, his novelette "Think Like A Dinosaur" won the Hugo Award in 1996. He lives in Portsmouth, New Hampshire with his wife Pamela and his teenagers Maura, Jamie and John. Here are some things about Jim that didn't seem to fit anywhere else: He likes to spend as much time as possible underwater (see photo, above.) He survived being both an altar boy and a Boy Scout. He is an avid gardener, skier and roller blader. His favorite TV show is Dr. Katz. He wears a size nine and a half shoe. His personal best in the ten kilometer run is 41:38. His favorite breakfast is French toast. He knew the Patriots were going to lose the Super Bowl last year. Oh, and he loves talking to his readers.

Friday, July 30, 2004 There are six nominees for the 2004 Hugo Award for Best Novelette because of a tie. This is a fairly difficult category for me to rank. There's one story I liked quite a lot, one story I didn't like at all, and the rest are kind of ehhh. The story I didn't like at all is "Hexagons," by Robert Reed online at Asimov's ). My notes to myself on it read, "Oh look. Alternate history with Hitler. Ooooh." and I really don't think I can add to that. The story I liked quite a lot is Jeffrey Ford's "The Empire of Ice Cream" online at scifi.com And then there are the four stories in the middle. I may just draw lots to rank them, honestly.
  • "Bernardo's House," by James Patrick Kelly online at Asimov's ) has an opening that caught my attention ("The house was lonely.") Apparently in the future, successful men keep houses as mistresses, or at least one does; the story is about what happens when he stops visiting the house. The other main character is of a type I'm not crazy about and, perhaps as a result, pushed my suspension of disbelief a bit. The house's POV is reasonably good, but the story didn't really grab me. Information Technology New and Old: James Patrick Kelly's Big Guy and E. M. Forster's The Machine Stops
Ever since the team Clinton/Gore came up with their suggestion for a "National Information Superhighway" during the Presidential campaign in 1992, information technology in general - and the Internet in particular - has been in the focus of the media in the United States. As a result of this, a vast majority of the American public is aware of information technology. The question arises though, whether this awareness also includes a knowledge of facts. A recent survey found that 57% of the interviewees did not know what cyberspace meant, yet at the same time 87% were certain that information technology had made their life better. Another indication of the ignorance of the public are the releases of the first major Hollywood productions on the topic in the summer of 1995. Movies like The Net or Virtuosity are plagued by numerous factual mistakes inadmissible for an informed audience. Science fiction authors, on the contrary, are faced with a much more sophisticated audience as a recent reader survey

Sunday Interview: James Patrick Kelly
I know it's been a few weeks since I last posted an interview, but I took a little time off from this because I wanted to focus on other things. However, you are in for a treat because today's guest is science fiction writer James Patrick Kelly . The author of many, many, many sci-fi short stories, Jim is a master of the form and could go toe-to-toe with any other short story writer out there. Check out both of his story collections, THINK LIKE A DINOSAUR and STRANGE BUT NOT A STRANGER. He has also written a number of novels, including INTO THE SUN, PLANET OF WHISPERS and WILDFIRE. Jim was recently awarded his first Nebula Award for his novella BURN, ending his always-a-bridesmaid-never-a-bride streak with the Nebula, for which he was nominated nine times before BURN. As for the Hugo Awards, the other graddaddy of sci-fi awards, Jim has two.
But Jim has also gone beyond the medium of the printed book, writing radio plays, planetarium shows and stage plays; as well as being a pioneer in Podcasting. But that's still isn't the end of Jim's work. He is a columnist with Asimov's magazine, where he has published a short story in every June issue since the beginning of time, I think. He is also a brilliant writing instructor, having taught at the Clarion workshop, Viable Paradise and the Stonecoast MFA program at the University of Southern Maine. And finally, but far from the least of his achievements, he was mentor to one of the

Burn is the Nebula Award winning novella by James Patrick Kelly from Tachyon Books; an Asimov's regular, Kelly's magnificent novella is set on the colony planet Walden.
James Patrick Kelly Asimov's While Kelly published four novels over the decade from 1984 to 1994, he is better known in the field for his short fiction, establishing himself as one of the leading exponents at shorter lengths over the last twenty years, publishing on average two or three stories a year over that period. Even Burn The difference is more than just the number of pages available to the reader. Novels are often written from multiple points of view and feature sub-plots, which are only hinted at in novellas, which have mostly single perspectives. Particularly in Burn, Kelly writes taut, lean prose, with not a single word wasted, keeping the narrative intimately close to fire-fighter Spur.
