Burn
by James Patrick Kelly Publisher: Tachyon ISBN: Format: Hardcover Pages: James Patrick Kelly is one of the pre-eminant short fiction writers in the SF genre, so it may not come as a surprise to learn that Burn is a novella rather than a novel. Its only print publication (at least so far) is as a relatively expensive hardcover through a small press, but it's also available on-line in various formats (particularly given that it was short-listed for the 2006 Hugo). The setting of the story is an undesirable planet taken over by a settlement of devotees of Thoreau and his views on simplicitly of life. Over the course of the story, one learns that the rest of human-controlled space has gone far down the path of technological development; various modifications of humans are hinted at, and one supporting character is an uploaded mind of some sort. The world of Walden, however, is a refuge for unmodified humans, living a simple rural life that is likely to remind the modern reader of the Amish (although Thoreau's philosophies have a subtly different motivation). Two things are interfering with that utopia. First, the original settlers refused to leave, and now tha the Walden settlers are spreading a fast-growing type of tree that's covering the planet, they're starting fires to fight back, often via self-immolation. Second, the protagonist Spur, one of the Walden forest fire-fighters, is recovering from burns suffered in one of those attacks in a very sophisticated hospital and contacts an off-worlder with a very similar name on a whim while there. As a result, High Gregory of Kenning, a particularly enthusiastic and apparently powerful 10-year-old boy, shows up on Walden with a group of advisors and wants to poke his nose into everything.

Author Focus - JAMES PATRICK KELLY
Particularily adept with short fiction, James Patrick Kelly is well represented in the audio medium. A few years ago he was actively involved with Seeing Ear Theater - before production ceased - and several of Jim's stories were adapted to SET's unique audio dramatizations. His stories tend towards the sociological and personal - but they also tend to be humourus and poetical. Kelly currently writes a column about the internet for Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine and for the last few years he's lived in Nottingham, NH, pop 3300. Kelly describes his place there as "The Bunker."

You and Your Characters
by James Patrick Kelly
Once I admitted to myself that I had the raging hunger to write, I gobbled up every book on the subject I could find. I still have most of them; I've just gathered fourteen and stacked them beside my computer monitor for inspiration. Each has a chapter on characterization. If you're looking for technical jargon, have I got some used books for you! It seems there are all kinds of characters: developing characters, static characters, round characters, flat characters, cardboard characters (oh, are there cardboard characters!), viewpoint characters, sympathetic characters, unsympathetic characters, stock characters, confidantes, foils, spear-carriers, narrators, protagonists, antagonists. But that's not all; characters can play many roles. There are flat, sympathetic, static confidantes, like the unnamed first person narrator in H.G. Wells "The Time Machine." Or developing, flat, unsympathetic antagonists, like HAL in 2001, A Space Odyssey . Still with me? no ! Slow down! Tell, don't show

T H A N K S ! Eileen In the beginning, everyone went to school at night. The first bell rang at 10 PM and kids sat in class until midnight, when everyone went to the lunchroom to eat. The cafeteria food didn't actually look all that bad under the lights. For a while our school here in town had flashlight night and Mrs. Perkins turned off all the lights in the cafeteria and the kids ate by flashlight. But that ended when our lunch ladies complained about the mess. After lunch there was recess, but since none of the kids parents allowed them to play outside in the middle of the night, recess wasn't much fun. Mostly kids just sat in the hall and played go fish or doodled in their notebooks or counted the floor tiles. After recess, everyone went back to class. The buses came at 3:30 in the morning. Most of them were black, although some were dark blue or purple with brown polka dots. You had to look real hard to see them. Kids usually got home in time for sunrise and a nice breakfast of hamburgers or pizza or maybe chicken nuggets. The good thing about night school was that all the kids studied hard and were did well on standardized tests because when they looked out the window in class there was nothing to see. The bad thing about night school was … well there wasn't anything bad. Everyone thought it was perfect. Or at least that's what they thought in the beginning. they weren't very smart back then.
