ABIDING MYSTERY
Three Poems from Best American Poetry 2003 Citizens, this will not do: when I put a search on “poetry” and “mystery” a porn site tops the list. Or at least it looks to be that – I didn’t click. What info appears suggests there may be an X-rated model out there working her way through college under the alias Ms. Poetry Mystery. That’s always the way of it. Many want to appropriate the idea of poetry, its charged aura, its mystery – or else they just like the word “poetry”. But few want to support it, or read it. The cheap phonies. After that list came many sites offering poetry books and mystery novels. I’d had in mind some reference to this: the abiding mystery around which so many poems revolve. Poets touch upon it, gesture towards it, but, wisely, almost never try to solve or resolve it, the way the mathematician, physician or private investigator strive to solve the equation, diagnose the problem, or crack the case. Poets survey a realm of mystery I hardly know how to name. I can only say it has to do with the oddness of life on earth, the fluid and shifting nature of perception, one’s own curious fantastical existence, and the confounding, unaccountable existence of others. (And it seems others do exist because often when I dial a number a voice speaks out of the receiver –

Landscapes I and II here Comparing Lesle Lewis' work to that of other poets is challenging. When I first heard Lesle Lewis reading the poems in , before reading them on paper, I initially thought: oh, she's just like Brigit Pegeen Kelly, but lighter, funnier. Her narratives trip through surreal territory, giving more of a sense of mood than of story. Maybe Brigit Pegeen Kelly crossed with Denise Duhamel? Later, reading the book of prose poems, dream-like, musical, full of breath and rush, I realized a better comparison might be Matthea Harvey, whose whimsical paragraph poems pull you along inexorably. Unlike Pegeen Kelly, whose long-lined narratives are full of a twisty, apocalyptic sense of doom, the playful paragraphs here lead us to imaginary landscapes (with a hint of the familiar) where the characters may be real, archetypal or symbolic, the declarations come out of nowhere, and a statement of aching emotion might be followed by a pun or a breezy observation. Take, for instance, the lead poem in the book, "Story," in its entirety:
"You, my girl, I don't dislike. Faith is a male. This is a love story. Doubt is a character too and her sidekick, self appraisal. Patience is another character if you hang around him enough. Death plays itself. If the boy is an innocent, he believes the girl will be the only one. She knows love is temporary but she loves the boy. Along comes the poet who sits on a bench, watches, and cries. It is so beautiful and more than that. So is everything against the poor boy? Along comes a man. He's willing to wait and see. He feels no stress either way. Maybe he wants it to work for the boy; he probably does. Who doesn't love the little man? In the end, death itself shows and clicks the characters off one by one. What's left? The love lingers in the air. The doubt hovers. The patience stays patient. Nothing is lost. Spring comes to all of us."

What is Illinois anyway? What is an Illinoisan? In an era when corporate logos are more familiar than state flags, can statehood still exercise pull, still contribute to a shared sense of who we are? Once we get past Abe Lincoln and the image of the prairie, is there anything particular to define Illinois, to distinguish it from any other place? These questions lurk behind our controversies about development. What is lost, after all, when sprawl engulfs rural Illinois? If there is no unique Illinois spirit, then what does it matter if our small towns are replaced by superstores identical to those in California and Pennsylvania? Politicians and developers are willing to supply easy answers to these questions. They evoke vague bygone eras, even as they embrace the most immediate source of profit. Pseudo- rustic, artificial names for subdivisions and malls leave us ignorant of the real past and cynical about tradition.

The scholar readings were great! I read 3 poems on Friday and really have enjoyed hearing my fellow scholars' work. The food here is great, the routine hectic, and I'm having a great time. I saw a fox last night on my way to the library perhaps the biggest fox I've ever seen. Wolf big. It was so beautiful, about 50 feet away, walking around in the late-night mist. one of my favorite short-story collections , in the dinner line last night. This place is swarming.
