David H. Keller From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search David H. Keller (December 23, – July 13, ) David Henry Keller (most often published as David H. Keller, MD, but also known by the pseudonyms Monk Smith, Matthew Smith, Amy Worth, Henry Cecil, Cecilia Henry and Jacobus Hubelaire) was a writer for pulp magazines in the mid-twentieth century who wrote science fiction fantasy and horror . He was the first psychiatrist to write for the genre. Keller was born in Philadelphia and graduated from the School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in 1903. He served as neuropsychiatrist in U.S. Army Medical Corps during World Wars I and II, and was the Assistant Superintendent of the Louisiana State Mental Hospital at Pineville until Huey Long’s reforms removed him from his position in the 1928. That same year, Keller would travel to New York City to meet with Hugo Gernsback , publisher of Amazing Stories , who had bought his first professionally published science fiction story, The Revolt of the Pedestrians. Gernsback was impressed by Keller’s quality of writing, unique insight, and ability to address sophisticated themes beyond the commonplace technological predictions or lurid alien encounters typically found in early pulp stories. The Thing in the Cellar by David H. Keller I first encountered the story you are about to read when I was 12 years old, in a paperback collection of horror stories. At the time, to be perfectly honest, the story scared the pants off of me and led to a couple of sleepless nights (even today, it still gives me a bit of a shiver). The details of the story have stayed crystal clear in my mind all these years, even though the title of the anthology is long forgotten, as were, until recently, the title of the story and the name of the author. Fortunately, for both you and me, I have found that the source of my sleepless nights was a tale entitled, "The Thing in the Cellar" and that the author was a man by the name of David H. Keller. Dr. David Henry Keller was born in 1880 and, upon graduation from medical school, specialized in the field of psychoanalysis. Throughout his life he was a prolific writer, having written some 700 medical articles and ten medical books during his lifetime. Keller was also known in medical circles for his (then) ground-breaking work with shell-shock victims during WWI. While this might have been enough for some, Keller was also a writer of fiction, which he did for his own amusement; a practice he began, by some accounts, at the age of 14. It was not until 1928, at the urging of his family, that

Keller Collection, donated to the library in the 1980s, consists of science fiction and fantasy pulp magazines from the 1920s through the 1960s, as well as many of the personal papers of Dr. David H. Keller. The American pulp industry began in 1896 with Frank Munsey's Argosy , a once-glossy magazine that cut its production costs, committed itself to an all-fiction format, and found that its readership swelled. Over the decades that followed, pulp magazines, so called because of the inexpensive paper on which they were printed, were produced for readers of all predilections: science fiction, detective fiction, romantic fiction, "submarine stories," "Oriental stories," fantasy, horror, adventure, collegiate fiction, and so on. As cultural artifacts, pulp magazines are notable for their exuberant defiance of the usual standards of quality, made of the cheapest, pulpiest paper, and emblazoned with vibrant, often tawdry artwork. Dr. Keller (1880-1965) was a Philadelphia-area psychiatrist who achieved renown as a fiction writer during the heyday of the pulps, and, according to Hugo Gernsback (the creator of such publications as
