The Plaka Literature Greek writer Nikos Kazantzakis Just "Zorba the Greek," and "The Last Temptation of Christ" would be enough to make the Cretan author Kazantzakis (1883-1957) both well known and controversial. But he has written other books that deserve more attention. He narrowly missed winning the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1956. Frankly, I found the famous"Last Temptation" unconvincing: I wasn't offended, I just didn't find the sudden conversion of Jesus to be realistic, or the other characters to be engaging. And, by the way, there is not one word in the Bible that says Mary Magdalene was a prostitute. But, "Last Temptation" is illustrative, in another way, of who Kazantzakis is, and how the church and world chose to react to him. The church was horrified by him, and eventually the Orthodox Church expelled him. Typical, sad, and wrong. In fact, while Kazantzakis not your ordinary Christian, he is very religious. His books are filled with characters and incidents of spirituality and the quest for the authentic destiny of humans. He is consumed with "struggle" and "ascent" and how it is that frail humans, who must die, are given this ache for transcendence. That is the Christian quest.

Although Kazantzakis has a large following in the United States, and is becoming more and more accepted in his homeland of Greece, he has, as yet, failed to achieve the recognition elsewhere that he so richly deserves. Novelist, dramatist, poet and journalist, Kazantzakis's philosophy consist largely in a pioneering attempt to retain a spiritual world-view whilst heeding Nietzsche's devastating attack on metaphysiscs. Kazantzakis was born in Iraklion, Crete, in 1883. He studied law in Athens before moving to Paris to study under the influential French philosopher Henri Bergson. In Paris he also developed a deep appreciation of Nietzsche, and soon afterwards became heavily interested in the teaching of the Buddha. He also composed travel books about his journalistic visits to Europe and the Far East. His magnum opus, The Odyssey: A Modern Sequel consists of a monumental 33,333 verses and was completed in 1938.

"Since we cannot change reality," he said. "Let us change the eyes which see reality." His works examined the dual nature of man and the conflict between the flesh and spirit "You have everything but one thing, madness. A man needs a little madness or else he never dares cut the rope and be free ," he said. His earthy novel Zorba the Greek (Vios kai politeia tou Alexi Zorba, 1946) created a passionate character, immortalized by Anthony Quinn in film. "Ah, if you could dance all that you've just said," proclaimed Zorba, "then I'd understand." Controversy exploded with The Last Temptation of Christ (O teleutaios peirasmos, 1951), a novel of Jesus ' struggle to reconcile his humanity and divinity. The book, which includes a dream-like scene of an

    "Thy Will Be Done"
"It is consummated." This was the Last Temptation which came in the space of a lightning flash to trouble the Savior's last moments. But all at once Christ shook his head violently, opened his eyes, and saw. No, he was not a traitor, glory be to God! He was not a deserter. He had accomplished the mission which the Lord had entrusted in him. He had not married, had not lived a happy life. He had reached the summit of sacrifice: he was nailed upon the Cross. Content, he closed his eyes. And then there was a great triumphant cry: It is accomplished! In other words: I have accomplished my duty, I am being crucified. I did not fall into temptation... This book was not written because I wanted to offer a supreme model to the man who struggles; I wanted to show him that he must not fear pain, temptation or death - because all three can be conquered, all three have already been conquered. Christ suffered pain, and since then pain has been sanctified. Temptation fought until the very last moment to lead him astray, and Temptation was defeated. Christ died on the Cross, and at that instant death was vanquished forever. Every obstacle in his journey became a milestone, an occasion for further triumph. We have a model in front of us now, a model who blazes our trail and gives us strength.

by Nikos Kazantzakis * Prologue * O Sun, great Oriental, my proud mind's golden cap,
I love to wear you cocked askew, to play and burst
in song throughout our lives, and so rejoice our hearts.
Good is this earth, it suits us! Like the global grape
it hangs, dear God, in the blue air and sways in the gale,
nibbled by all the birds and spirits of the four winds.
Come, let's start nibbling too, and so refresh our minds!
Between two throbbing temples in the mind's great wine vats
I tread on the crisp grapes until the wild must boils
and my mind laughs and steams within the upright day. Has the earth sprouted wings and sails, has my mind swayed until black-eyed Necessity got drunk and burst in song? Above me spreads the raging sky, below me swoops my belly, a white gull that breasts the cooling waves; my nostils fill with salty spray, the billows burst swiftly against my back, rush on, and I rush after. Great Sun, who pass on high yet watch all things below, I see the sun-drenched cap of the great castle-wrecker: let's kick and scuff it round to see where it will take us!

    Kazantzakis, Nikos
(1885-1957) Greek writer. Nikos Kazantzakis wrote essays, novels, poetry, tragedies, travel books, and much more. He once wrote: "How simple and frugal a thing is happiness: a glass of wine, a roast chestnut, a wretched little brazier, the sound of the sea." Always Thirsty "Although a national hero in his beloved homeland of Crete, Kazantzakis has failed to achieve the recognition in England that he so richly deserves. Novelist, playwright and journalist; disciple of Nietzsche, Bergson and Buddha; ... his works are the external expression of an inward cry that seeks answers to the most profound questions of existence." Read more from Lewis Owens. Nikos Kazantzakis "Kazantzakis, much more of a philosopher than a writer, was deeply influenced by the writings of Nietzsche and Bergson, and the philosophies of Christianity, Marxism and Buddhism. In his work, he attempted to synthesize these different world views." Read more about him.

Zorba the Greek by Nikos Kazantzakis is probably my all-time favorite book by Greece's greatest modern writer. If the world were not full of good books I would probably be happy reading this one over and over. It tells the story of a man whose love of life has kept the flame of passion burning within him. More than just a novel it is almost a spiritual guidebook on how to live. The narrator of the story who has inherited an old lignite mine in Crete and is a spiritually obsessed bookworm, meets Zorba and takes him on as the foreman of his mine and in so doing learns a lot more about life then he does about mining. Zorba is one of the greatest novels ever written. Read it! Matt's Pick!

    Who is Nikos Kazantzakis?
ad_unit_target='mainAdUnit'; X Close this window Nikos Kazantzakis was a playwright and novelist born on Crete in 1885. He lived to see both world wars played out in his beloved Europe, and his writing became his template for philosophy. He called writing his “battlefield” for political change. Kazantzakis is best known to English language readers for his novels, Zorba the Greek , and The Last Temptation of Christ . In fact, the publication of the latter was long ignored until Martin Scorsese made a film version of it in 1988. The film set off a firestorm of criticism about the portrayal of Jesus as a quite ordinary man, caught in an existential struggle of belief and denial. It also more than hints at a sexual relationship between Jesus and Mary Magdalene. The film was banned in most Greek theaters and the Roman papacy condemned it. Condemnation of the film probably resulted in higher box office returns than expected. It further stirred an interest in the writer, and the book enjoyed higher sales than any other of the Kazantzakis novels. The struggle of Christ is the struggle of Kazantzakis, who drew much inspiration from the existentialist philosopher Nietzsche , and from Buddhist philosophy. Though he called himself an atheist, Kazantzakis continually explored the idea of Christ, even spending time in a
