Nikos Kazantzakis (1885-1957) Prolific Greek writer, whose works include essays, novels, poems, tragedies, travel books, and translations of such classics as Dante's The Divine Comedy and J.W. von Goethe's Faust . Like his hero, Odysseus, Kazantzakis lived most of his artistic life outside Greece except for the years of World War II. "I am a mariner of Odysseus with heart of fire but with mind ruthless and clear," Kazantzakis wrote in TODA RABA (1934). Several of the author's novels deal with the history and culture of his own country, and the mystical relationship between man and God. In 1957 he lost the Nobel Prize by a single vote to the French writer Albert Camus. "Having seen that I was not capable of using all my resources in political action, I returned to my literary activity. There lay the the battlefield suited to my temperament. I wanted to make my novels the extension of my own father's struggle for liberty. But gradually, as I kept deepening my responsibility as a writer, the human problem came to overshadow political and social questions. All the political, social, and economic improvements, all the technical progress cannot have any regenerating significance, so long as our inner life remains as it is at present. The more the intelligence unveils and violates the secrets of Nature, he more the danger increases and the heart shrinks."

Although many may be familiar with the novels Zorba the Greek and The Last Temptation of Christ, both of which have been adapted into films, few are as familiar with their author, Nikos Kazantzakis . Although Kazantzakis has a large following in the United States, and is becoming more and more accepted in his homeland of Greece, he has, as yet, failed to achieve the recognition elsewhere that he so richly deserves. Novelist, dramatist, poet and journalist, Kazantzakis's philosophy consist largely in a pioneering attempt to retain a spiritual world-view whilst heeding Nietzsche's devastating attack on metaphysiscs.
Kazantzakis was born in Iraklion, Crete, in 1883. He studied law in Athens before moving to Paris to study under the influential French philosopher Henri Bergson. In Paris he also developed a deep appreciation of Nietzsche, and soon afterwards became heavily interested in the teaching of the Buddha. He also composed travel books about his journalistic visits to Europe and the Far East. His magnum opus, The Odyssey: A Modern Sequel consists of a monumental 33,333 verses and was completed in 1938.

(updated August 4, 2007) Nikos Kazantzakis (Crete's Prodigal Son) was one of the most important Greek writers, philosophers and poets. He was born on February 30, 1883 in Heraklion . He is best known for the work 'Zorba the Greek' , which he wrote at the end of his life. In his work Kazantzakis was influenced by big philosophers such as Friedrich Nietzsche. The childhood of Kazantzakis is mainly influenced by the run-up to the revolution in his homeland. On his birth Greece still is part of the Ottoman (Turkish) empire. During the revolution, which brakes out in 1897, the Greeks separate themselves from the Turks. For his own safety Kazantzakis departs to the island of Naxos during the revolution, around 1897. A place that Kazantzakis calls 'the great sweetness' . On Naxos Kazantzakis goes to a school that is headed by French monks. In Heraklion Kazantzakis finishes his secondary school. He then leaves to Athens to study law at the university. In 1907 he moved to Paris to do a Ph.D. in philosophy. At that moment, when 24-year-old, Kazantzakis is already famous in his own country. He is known by the play 'Day is breaking' that he wrote in 1906. In Paris Kazantzakis writes both journalistic pieces as serious literature. On his more serious work, he initially is mainly influenced by his teacher and leading French philosopher Henri Bergson-Louis. In Paris he also gets in contact with the works of

Nikos Kazantzakis One of the most important Greek writers, poets and philosophers of the 20th century, was born in Iraklion in 1883. In 1906 he graduated from the Athens Law School and continued his studies in Paris (1907-1909). During the Balkan Wars he fought as a volunteer in the Greek Army. After the Wars he travelled to many European and Asian countries, publishing travelogues from his trips (Spain, Egypt-Sina, China-Japan, What I saw in Russia, England etc.). Kazantzakis, much more of a philosopher than a writer, was deeply influenced by the writings of Nietzsche and Bergson , and the philosophies of Christianity Marxism and Buddhism . In his work, he attempted to synthesize these different world views. In 1927 he published the book "Askitiki", the main work of his philosophy. In 1938, after constantly revising it for 13 years (1925-1938), he publishes his epic poet Odyssey: A modern sequel , continuing Ulysses's story form the point where Homer leaves off. This huge poetical work comprises of 33.333 verses.

Nikos Kazantzakis Magdalene jumped up and paced back and forth between the fire and the door. Her mind had grown furious. God is the great enemy, she was thinking; yes, God. He never fails to intrude; he is evil, jealous; he won't let a person be happy. She stopped behind the door and cocked her ear. The heavens were bellowing. A whirlwind had arisen and the pomegranates in the yard knocked against one another and were ready to break. from The Last Temptation of Christ
The Greek novelist, poet, and thinker Nikos Kazantzakis , b. Crete, 1883, d. Oct. 26, 1957, spent half his life living in Germany, the USSR, and France. He also traveled widely throughout Europe, Japan, and Communist China. Influenced early by Nietzsche and Bergson, he owed a debt to Marxism and Buddhism as well as to Christianity and attempted to synthesize these apparently disparate world views. His career started out more philosophical and pedagogical than literary. He came to the fore as a poet only in 1938 with his vast philosophical epic The Odyssey: A Modern Sequel (Eng. trans., 1958), which takes up the hero's story where Homer leaves off.
