21. Bold Type: Jackie Kay
Firsttime novelist jackie kay found her muse in a news item she read about the bizarre revelation made upon musician Billy Tipton s death.
http://www.randomhouse.com/boldtype/0499/kay/
First-time novelist Jackie Kay found her muse in a news item she read about the bizarre revelation made upon musician Billy Tipton's death. Though born a woman, Tipton lived his professional and private life as a man: he had a wife, a child and legions of fans who were stunned by the unveiling of his most unusual secret. Trumpet is a fictionalized account of a parallel story; the novel opens after the death of renowned jazz trumpeter Joss Moody, a Scottish musician who left behind his widow Millie and their adopted son (now in his mid-20's) Coleman.
Kay paints a complex picture of the aftermath of Moody's death and of the realization of the secret that he and Millie kept from the world including their son. Several narrative voices tell the story: family, friends, fellow-musicians, the bewildered medical examiner and funeral director and the hungry tabloid journalist. The melange of voices serves both to uncover the events of Moody's life and to celebrate it; through Millie's words it becomes obvious that, despite the bizarre circumstances surrounding it, theirs was a pure and deeply-rooted love. Kay also gives a voice to Coleman who, for most of the novel, grapples with his own anger and shock and with his compulsion to reexamine every aspect of his relationship with his father for clues and answers. Through simple, elegant prose and a cast of colorful characters, Kay has written an intricate novel whose main character touched the lives of many and left behind a legacy of music and mystery.

interview The Poetryclass Interview
Jackie Kay is the Guest Poet at the Times Educational Supplement for the summer term 2001.

Jean Sprackland, poetryclass Project Manager, asked her some crucial questions about her own writing and her work as a poet in schools.
You write extensively for both children and adults. How do the two differ? I don't think they differ much. I don't like writing for children that is 'writing for children'. If it is any good, then adults will like it too. When I create a voice or a character, I go through the same process whether that voice is a child's or an adult's. When I am writing for children, my own childhood - my past - comes swimming back. I like to keep the conversation open between myself as an adult and myself as a child. When I am creating children's characters, the gap between childhood and adulthood doesn't seem all that large. What do you remember about poetry in school when you were a child? Was school the place where you got excited about it?

Author: Sarah Aldridge
ISBN: 1-56280-001-9
Price: $12.00
Pages: 231
Genre: Romance/Lesbian
A Flight of Angels is another of those classics by a great lady of lesbian literature. Set in Washington, D.C., often at the National Gallery of Art, and set in the McCarthy era, a group of people connected both at work and socially discusses the events encompassing a painting that is both mysterious and controversial. Surrounding the larger story is the tale of two young women, Clemence and Elissa, and their blossoming romantic interest in one another, as well as events affecting their small circle of friends.
When Francis and Robert become involved with the Irish women, a complicated dance of relationships ensues. One of the women is at odds with her own beliefs and the other is so strictly imbued in the dogma of the Church that it seems impossible for any love relationship to survive. A Flight of Angels gives great insight into the history of the time as well as lets us look in on the developing relationships among friends and lovers as they struggle to live in an era with less tolerance than we find in most places in the United States today. Read this classic for its historical content as well as its entertainment value.

Learning Journeys Jackie Kay Biography Jackie Kay was born in Edinburgh in 1961 to a Scottish mother and Nigerian father, and was adopted at birth by a white couple living in Glasgow. She had a happy childhood, in spite of racial bullying at school, and remains close to her adoptive parents. The birth of her own son spurred her to trace her natural mother. She has said that 'All writers draw on their own experience and a lot of my experience has been heightened'. Thus her poem sequence 'The Adoption Papers' considers the experience of adoption, while the consciousness of being black in Britain, and concerns with gender identity (she identified herself as lesbian early on), are also constants in her work. At first Kay wanted to be an actress and attended part-time classes at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow. She was encouraged
