Franz Kafka

Kafka was a Czech-born, German novelist whose writing had tremendous influence on western literature and art. His many books include The Castle , The Trial , and The Great Wall of China . His novels have been translated into many languages and have been adapted for movies, plays, and operas. The plot in his books generally center around the hero`s search for identity. Kafka was attracted to vegetarianism for health and ethical reasons. While viewing a fish in an aquarium, he said, "Now I can look at you in peace; I don`t eat you any more." He had little faith in conventional doctors; he was interested in the benefits of raw-food diets. He was also involved in anti-vivisection activities.

The Name Is Kafka . . . Franz Kafka
By Michael Kinsley Friday, June 16, 2006; Page A25 "So put aside your Captain Crunch decoder ring," recommends the Central Intelligence Agency, "for the moment." This is on the Internet site of the CIA's legal department. It's part of a pitch for recruits so startlingly moronic even as an attempt at adorable self-mockery that you think it must be some subtle comment on the double meaning of the word "intelligence." In good hall-of-mirrors fashion, it's lifted from some book, but the book quotes supposedly real CIA employees. Whatever, this is the agency's self-presentation on its own Web site. "If the theme music from Mission Impossible runs through your head," it says, "or you get the urge to order a martini 'shaken, not stirred,' at the mention of the letters 'CIA,' '' why, then, you're just the kind of lawyer we want!

Kafka, Franz, 1883-1924
Biographical note
One of the major German-language novelists and short story writers of the 20th century, whose unique body of writing — most of it published posthumously despite his wish that it be destroyed — has become iconic in Western literature. He is best known for the creation of Gregor Samsa in Die Verwandlung (The Metamorphosis), published in 1915, and Joseph K. in Der Prozess (The Trial), published in 1925, which explore the idea of the individual's alienation from his surroundings, his society, and from himself. The adjective "kafkaesque" has entered the language to express the absurd, surreal, and terrifying world that Kafka's work created. More ...

The Archbishop's Palace in the
Prague Castle complex
In a recent post in our discussion forum , reader John Q. Wimmer observed that " Prague Castle (Pratske Hrad) is truly a frightening and imposing profile against the 'medieval' Czechoslovakian night." The castle which appears so foreboding in the Tom Cruise film, Mission Impossible has towered over the river Vltava for a thousand years. It is a part of the Hradcany royal complex, where Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and Rococo facades form startling juxtapositions.
What's
Spooky?
You tell us!
But it's not only Prague's castle that sends chills down my spine. The golden city in Czech Republic has a secret side which is both beautiful and eerie. At the turn of the century, Prague was home to the surrealist author, Franz Kafka. Its convoluted streets and unpredictable architecture are reflected in his bizarre, disturbing stories

The exhibition "Kafka - Prague" will be shown at Beth Hatefutsoth as of November 13, 2003. The exhibition is being held to mark the hundred and twentieth anniversary of the birth of Franz Kafka, one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century. It consists of portraits of Kafka, his family and friends as well as a photographic portrait of Prague, in 1960-1964, taken by the Czech photographer Jan Parik. The photographs are a selection from an exhibition compiled by J. Parik and held at Beth Hatefutsoth in 1980 (one of the Museum's first exhibitions). Parik's camera affords us a glimpse of the unique atmosphere of the ancient city of Prague, where Kafka was born, raised, wrote and spent almost all of his life.
