Updated - Saturday, 11 August, 2001 Prolific German novelist and essayist, whose militarism and anti-Semitism in the 1920s and 1930s was changed in his allegory On the Marble Cliffs (1939) into a criticism of the German National Socialism. Junger served as an officer of the German Army in both world wars - during World War II he was an officer in the Wermacht and part of the forces occupying Paris. His career as a writer spanned over 80 years and his decisions on the crucial moments of his life showed exceptional independence. Junger's brother was the poet and essayist Friedrich Georg Junger. "There are periods of decline when the pattern fades to which our inmost life must conform. When we enter upon them we sway and lose our balance. From hollow joy we sink to leaden sorrow, and past and future acquire a new charm from our sense of loss. So we wander aimlessly in the irretrievable past or in distant Utopias; but the fleeting moment we cannot grasp." (from On the Marble Cliffs Ernst Junger was born in Heidelberg as the son of a pharmacist. He grew up in Hanover where he attended school between the years 1901 and 1913. Junger then ran away from home to join the French Foreign Legion. He survived the harsh discipline and served in North Africa. In World War I he distinguished himself at the Western Front. Junger was wounded several times and received the highest badge of honour. From 1919 to 1923 he served as an Officer in the army of the Weimar Republic. After studying biology in Leipzig and Naples, he eventually became a well-known entomologist and a number of insect species bear his name. In 1925 he married Gretha von Jeinsen; they had two children.

7. Radiance from Ernst Junger
Radiance is the perfect term to express the influence that Ernst Junger's literary work and personality have had on me. In the light of his perspective, which stereoscopically comprises the surfaces and depths of things, the world I knew took on a new, translucent splendor. That happened a long time before the discovery of LSD and before I came into personal contact with this author in connection with hallucinogenic drugs. My enchantment with Ernst Junger began with his book Das Abenteuerliche Herz [The adventurous heart]. Again and again in the last forty years I have taken up this book. Here more than ever, in themes that weigh more lightly and lie closer to me than war and a new type of human being (subjects of Junger's earlier books), the beauty and magic of Junger's prose was opened to me-descriptions of flowers, of dreams, of solitary walks; thoughts about chance, the future, colors, and about other themes that have direct relation to our personal lives. Everywhere in his prose the miracle of creation became evident, in the precise description of the surfaces and, in translucence, of the depths; and the uniqueness and the imperishable in every human being was touched upon. No other writer has thus opened my eyes. Drugs were also mentioned in Das Abenteuerliche Herz. Many years passed, however, before I myself began to be especially interested in this subject, after the discovery of the psychic effects of LSD.

  • Ernst J¼nger 1895–1998
(Also transliterated as Ernst Juenger) German novelist and essayist. The following entry presents an overview of J¼nger's career through 1994.
    INTRODUCTION
J¼nger began his career as a soldier and philosopher, but he was also an accomplished natural scientist, a novelist, and an essayist. Although J¼nger was never a formal member of the Nazi Party, many Party members considered him one of the intellectual fathers of Nazism. His relationship with the Party was complicated due to his close alliance with many Nazi officials, but he is one of a few writers who criticized Nazi leadership, denied membership in the party, and survived.
    Biographical Information
J¼nger was born in Heidelberg, Germany, in March 29, 1895. At 16 he fled his home and joined the French Foreign Legion. His father and the local authorities tracked J¼nger down and sent him home. In 1914 he enlisted in the German Army. He was wounded seven times during World War I and received the Pour le M©rite , Germany's highest military honor. After the war, J¼nger's father encouraged him to publish a book based on the journal he kept during the war. The result was
