A n expatriate Irishman, James Joyce set his works in Dublin, but shunned the flourishing Irish literary revival. He wrote and worked intermittently as an English teacher, moving his family from Dublin to Austria to Italy to Switzerland. In 1906, as he finished Dubliners , he considered appending a short story "Ulysses" to the end of the work. Instead he embarked on a full length Ulysses in 1914, the year of the publication of Dubliners and the serialization of Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man , his first literary successes. Ulysses would not be finished until October of 1921, and was ultimately published in 1922 by Sylvia Beach's Shakespeare and Company, center of Paris's flourishing literary scene. In the seven intervening years, a series of financial and legal struggles, perhaps even more than its own literary merits warranted, assured the apotheosis of Ulysses into the Western literary canon. A master work of modernist literature, Ulysses used the structure of the Homeric Odyssey as a contrast to the lives of the Dublin working class. The entire 732-page work takes place during Dublin's "dailiest day possible," Thursday, 16 June 1904. The bleak lives of the Dublin working class formed a stark contrast to the heroic Odyssey , and Joyce's frank realism was too avant-garde for the cultural police of the day. As Joyce began writing

NOTES
Rec: London, 1929
Recording James Joyce by Sylvia Beach In 1924, 1 went to the office of His Master's Voice in Paris to ask them if they would record a reading by James Joyce from Ulysses . I was sent to Piero Coppola, who was in charge of musical records, but His Master's Voice would agree to record the Joyce reading only if it were done at my expense. The record would not have their label on it, nor would it be listed in their catalogue. Joyce himself was anxious to have this record made, but the day I took him in a taxi to the factory in Billancourt, quite a distance from town, he was suffering with his eyes and very nervous. Luckily, he and Coppola were soon quite at home with each other, bursting into Italian to discuss music. But the recording was an ordeal for Joyce, and the first attempt was a failure. We went back and began again, and I think the Ulysses record is a wonderful performance. I never hear it without being deeply moved. Joyce had chosen the speech in the Aeolus episode, the only passage that could be lifted out of

managed by some fellow with a bit of bounce who could pull the indispensable wires and thus combine business with pleasure. But who? That was the rub. Also, without being actually positive, it struck him a great field was to be opened up in the line of opening up new routes to keep pace with the times APROPOS of the Fishguard-Rosslare route which, it was mooted, was once more on the TAPIS in the circumlocution departments with the usual quantity of red tape and dillydallying of effete fogeydom and dunderheads generally. A great opportunity there certainly was for push and enterprise to meet the travelling needs of the public at large, the average man, i.e. Brown, Robinson and Co. What is this?

J ames Joyce's Ulysses has been hailed as a masterpiece since its publication in 1922. This tale of the adventures of advertising salesman Leopold Bloom on June 16, 1904, in Dublin is a remarkable conflation of mythology, symbolism, philosophy, social realism, and humanity. Bloom's relationships with wife Molly and surrogate son Stephan Dedalus reflect the simple decency of the common man. H owever, the common reader has been reluctant to face Joyce's great panorama. Laden with obscure references and dogged by an ever-growing body of secondary literature, the book's reputation as a "difficult" work has placed a barrier between the book and its potential audience. This is a shame, because Joyce was writing for a general readership, and his novel offers a remarkable experience even for the reader with no prior familiarity with Joyce's world. On this site, however, I've got 36 perl-based CGI scripts on each page, searching the Cadbury Line Reference database. Hence, when this site is scanned, it sets off all the CGI's at once, crippling the server. Hence, DON'T DO THAT!

James Joyce (1882-1941)
I Hear an Army I hear an army charging upon the land, And the thunder of horses plunging; foam about their knees: Arrogant, in black armour, behind them stand, Disdaining the reins, with fluttering whips, the Charioteers. They cry into the night their battle name: I moan in sleep when I hear afar their whirling laughter. They cleave the gloom of dreams, a blinding flame, Clanging, clanging upon the heart as upon an anvil. They come shaking in triumph their long grey hair: They come out of the sea and run shouting by the shore. My heart, have you no wisdom thus to despair? My love, my love, my love, why have you left me alone? Des Imagistes Note : a version with different lineation appears as Chamber Music XXXVI.
