Joycean Values We memorialize this year’s human rights effort on behalf of Anna Politkovskaya, the Russian journalist who was shot dead in October of 2006 in the elevator of her apartment block in central Moscow. On the day of her murder, Politkovskaya had planned to file a lengthy story on torture practices believed to be used by Chechen security detachments loyal to pro-Moscow state officials. Politkovskaya tirelessly chronicled human rights abuses and policy failures in Chechnya and elsewhere in Russia's North Caucasus.

James Joyce
Novelist
Writing in English is the most ingenious torture
ever devised for sins committed in previous lives. James Joyce was born on February 2, 1882 in Dublin, Ireland. His subtle yet frank portrayal of human nature, coupled with his mastery of language made him one of the most influential novelists of the 20th century.
Joyce is best known for his experimental use of language and his exploration of new literary methods. His use of the literary technique, "stream-of-consciousness" reveals the flow of impressions, half thoughts, associations, hesitations, impulses, as well as the rational thoughts of his characters. The main strength of his masterpiece novel, " Ulysses " (1922) lies in the depth of character portrayed using this technique. Joyce's other major works include " Dubliners ," a collection of short stories that portray his native city, a semi-autobiographical novel called " A Portrait of the Artist As a Young Man " (1916), and " Finnegans Wake " (1939), an experimental novel that first appeared in the form of extracts from 1928 to 1937 as "Work in Progress."

The International James Joyce Foundation
The XXIst International James Joyce Symposium in Tours, France - June 2008
The International James Joyce Foundation was created in 1967 at the First International James Joyce Symposium, held on BloomsdayJune 16in Dublin. Its purposes are to encourage scholarship, criticism, and study in regard to the life, work, and career of the writer whom many regard as the preeminent figure in modern literature, and to facilitate and coordinate ways in which scholars, critics, teachers, students, and general readers may meet together, correspond with each other, learn from one another, and help each other in achieving a greater appreciation and understanding of his work; these purposes have been carried out with increasing success. A central function of the Foundation is its sponsorship of the International James Joyce Symposium, held every other year around Bloomsday. These conferences gather together important scholars and readers ("Joycean" and "non-Joycean") from all over the world. Past Symposia have been held in such sites as Trieste, Z¼rich, Frankfurt, Paris, Copenhagen, Venice, Monaco, Seville, Rome, London, and, of course, Dublin. Anyone interested in the aims of The International James Joyce Foundation may join by the payment of dues. A basic membership includes a subscription to the Foundation Newestlatter, published several times a year.

On this day in 1941 James Joyce died in Zurich at the age of fifty-eight. Even without the dislocation of WWII, Joyce's last years were beset with difficulties the schizophrenia of his daughter, the breakdown of his son's career and marriage, his own poor health, ongoing battles over Ulysses and new worries about Finnegans Wake . "Though not so blind as Homer, and not so exiled as Dante," writes biographer Richard Ellmann, "he had reached his life's nadir." Joyce's Birthday Books

North Richmond Street, being blind, was a quiet street except at the hour when the Christian Brothers' School set the boys free. An uninhabited house of two storeys stood at the blind end, detached from its neighbours in a square ground. The other houses of the street, conscious of decent lives within them, gazed at one another with brown imperturbable faces.
