During his career, Daniels owned and operated several newspapers, including the Raleigh . Upon leaving office, Daniels returned to editorship of the and full-time residency at Wakestone. He also remained in close contact with Franklin D. Roosevelt, who had served as Assistant Secretary of the Navy under Daniels. In 1933, newly elected President Roosevelt appointed Daniels as Ambassador to Mexico, where he promoted Roosevelt's Good Neighbor Policy with Latin America. In 1941, Daniels resigned his post because of his wife's ill health, and returned to Raleigh. After Addie Daniels died in 1943, the S.S. Addie Daniels was commissioned in her honor. Josephus Daniels died in Raleigh in 1948 at the age of 85. In 1950, the house was purchased by the Raleigh Masons, and became the headquarters for the Masonic Temple of Raleigh. While the organization has made several external and internal alterations (most significantly a late 1950s rear addition), work has been largely compatible in design and materials with the original residence.

Special CD-ROM Status: Gathering Interest (Production can proceed at 100%) Logos is pleased to offer the preeminent critical edition of Josephus’ major works in Greek. Edited by Benedict Niese, this authoritative edition, derived from various Greek manuscripts, features a critical apparatus that pinpoints the differences in the various manuscripts. Cross-references to Scripture and to the other works in the collection are also in abundance. Each work is preceded by an introductory preface, presented both in English and in Niese's original Latin. This is the first and only edition of Josephus’ works, electronic or otherwise, to feature Niese’s prefaces in English. The translation was produced by Logos specifically for this edition. Few authors have had as much influence on our understanding of the New Testament world as Josephus. His key works, The Antiquities of the Jews The War of the Jews Against Apion and the autobiographical Life have for centuries been scoured by scholars for their extensive historical and linguistical yield. These works, written from Josephus’ vantage as a first century Jewish historian and eye-witness to the first Jewish-Roman war, render an unparalleled depiction of the historical context in which Jesus and the Apostles lived and died. The impact Josephus has made on scholarship pertaining to the era of Christ cannot be overstated.

DR. JOSEPHUS HALL HOUSE
226 South Jackson Street
Salisbury, NC The Dr. Josephus Hall House today sits in a park like setting, reminiscent of a long ago era when life was very different. Purchased by Historic Salisbury Foundation in 1972, it was the Foundation's first project and help galvanize Salisbury's fledgling historic preservation efforts. Individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this handsome house was built as a school in 1820. It became a residence in 1825 when local businessman Maxwell Chambers and his half-sister Rebecca Troy purchased the house and made it their home. Successful medical doctor and businessman, Josephus Hall purchased the house in 1859 and began work to make it the showplace it is today. This house remained a home to three generations of the Hall family. Historic Salisbury Foundation purchased the house and furnishings from Dr. Hall's great granddaughter. with the Hall's china, silver and furniture, the house casts a magical spell over visitors. Since it's purchase, Historic Salisbury Foundation has opened maintained the house the opened it as a house museum.

Josephus in the Ante-Nicene Fathers: all the citations
The Testimonium Flavianum is really something I do not have time to write much about. However there seem to be arguments being made about it's authenticity based upon absence of evidence. I expressed my doubts about this approach in a newsgroup, and the following reply was made. I quote it, as the idea seems to be in common circulation: Josephus But is this true? I can't see why the Fathers would normally quote Josephus. So I investigated. This page is the product of a search for the word 'Josephus' in the Ante-Nicene Fathers at http://www.ccel.org/fathers2 . Results from footnotes or Nicene/Post-Nicene Fathers have been ignored, as the latter will know Eusebius, of course. After this I read Michael E. H ARDWICK Josephus as a historical source in Patristic literature through Eusebius , Brown Judaic Studies 128, Scholars Press, Georgia (1989). This covers the same ground, but also looks for possible unattributed references. Finally the references are discussed by Alice W HEALEY , Josephus on Jesus. Studies in Biblical Literature 36. New York: Peter Lang (2003).

Flavius Josephus (37-101 A.D) was a Jewish priest at the time of the Jewish Revolt of A.D. 66. He was captured by the Romans, imprisoned, set free and then retired to Rome where he wrote a history of the Jewish Revolt called the "Jewish War." Later he wrote "Antiquities" as a history of the Jews.
Following is a brief listing of some other people and places mentioned by Josephus that correspond to biblical mention. They demonstrate that the Bible is not alone in its description of people, events, and places. It is verified by other sources.
  • Antipas mentioned
  • 17:8:1, " And now Herod altered his testament upon the alteration of his mind; for he appointed Antipas, to whom he had before left the kingdom, to be tetrarch of Galilee and Berea, and granted the kingdom to Archelaus. "

    Who's Who: Josephus Daniels
Updated - Sunday, 9 June, 2002 Josephus Daniels (1862-1948) served as Secretary of the U.S. Navy from 1912-20. Appointed President Woodrow Wilson's Secretary to the Navy in 1912, and with a background in journalism, Josephus Daniels instigated a series of administrative reforms and oversaw a modest expansion of the navy from the summer of 1915 in spite of his own pacifist tendencies. In agreeing to an extension of naval capabilities in mid-1915 Daniels was effectively signing up to the notion of a degree of war preparedness, albeit reluctantly (a previous unwillingness that had led to the resignation of the navy's professional head, Admiral Bradley Allen Fiske ). Daniels worked closely with new Chief of Naval Operations Admiral William Benson in overseeing naval expansion. Nevertheless Daniels came under heavy conservative criticism both before and during U.S. involvement in the First World War, chiefly on account of the navy's limited preparedness for war. For example, battleships ordered in 1915 were eventually only launched in 1919. Even so, extensive production of destroyers and anti-submarine vessels proved crucial in throwing back German attempts to stifle (predominantly) British commercial links to the U.S.

Parallels between Josephus's Essenes, particularly those of War 2.119-61, and the people of the Dead Sea Scrolls have been crucial in forging this happy union, along with the elder Pliny's notice about Esseni who lived in the Judean desert ( N.
