"Now, there was about this time, Jesus, a wise man, if it be lawful to call him a man, for he was a doer of wonderful works, a teacher of such men as receive the truth with pleasure. He drew over to him both many of the Jews, and many of the Gentiles. He was the Christ; and when Pilate, at the suggestion of the principal men amongst us, had condemned him to the cross, those that loved him at the first did not forsake him, for he appeared to them alive again the third day, as the divine prophets had foretold these and ten thousand other wonderful things concerning him; and the tribe of Christians, so named from him, are not extinct at this day."

    J osephus [37-ca 100 CE The historian known to posterity by the Latinized name Josephus was a member of Jerusalem 's priestly aristocracy who, at age 30, was taken hostage in the great Jewish revolt against Rome (66-70 CE Vespasian Titus Domitian ]. His constant need to explain his role in the unsuccessful Jewish uprising that climaxed with the destruction of the Jerusalem temple led him to publish four works [in Greek] that are our prime source for information about events that shaped the history of Jews of the second temple period. Joseph bar Matthew [Greek: Matthias], as Josephus was originally known, was born soon after Caligula became Roman emperor (37/38 CE ). He was one of two sons of a Jewish priest who claimed descent from the Hasmonean family of priests who had won Jewish independence from the Greco-Syrian empire two centuries earlier. A precocious youth with a thirst for learning, Josephus claims that by the time he was 14 he was already consulted on legal problems by Jerusalem's chief priests [ Life 8]. At age 16 he began three years of intense religious training. After basic introduction to the principles of the three primary

    A man is as old as his arteries and his interests. If he permits his economic, religious, or social arteries to harden, or loses interest in whatever concerns mankind . . . he will need only six feet of earth.
    Josephus Daniels The word "bystander" could never be applied to Josephus Daniels. Daniels emerged from war torn eastern North Carolina to establish a popular and influential newspaper and serve in high government offices. Daniels' career was marked by straightforward words and actions that sometimes offended opponents but left no doubt as to where Daniels stood. The influence of Josephus Daniels may still be seen today. Daniels was born in Washington, North Carolina on May 18, 1862. The Civil War was in full fury, and the town of Washington changed hands several times. Josephus Daniels' father, also named Josephus, was a shipbuilder for the Confederacy and was killed before his son reached three years of age. Mary Daniels, Josephus' mother, started a small dressmaking business to support the family, but eventually moved the family to Wilson and became the postal official there. The three Daniels brothers also worked to aid the family income. Josephus worked several odd jobs, which included picking cotton and clerking in a drug store. Eventually he found a job in a printing office, a position which set the stage for a lifelong career in newspaper publication.

    You are here: History Learn More about Josephus! Flavius Josephus What was Flavius Josephus' original Hebrew name? What is his history?
    Born into a priestly and prestigious line of individuals c. AD 37, Josephus ben Matthias, more commonly known as Flavius Josephus, was to become a highly influential name in Jewish communities. The term "ben" means "son of."
    His father was a priest and, along with his brothers, Flavius Josephus was extremely well educated and early on developed a deep interest in learning. He ended up excelling in his studies and quickly progressed beyond the others, seeking new heights.
    He had a discipleship under an ascetic hermit named Banus and associated with such sects as the Essenes and Pharisees, the latter of which he officially joined when he was eighteen. By this time he was known as a learned and worldly young man, dedicated to both religious and political issues.
    Religiously, Flavius Josephus sought utmost chastity and lived under Banus with the strictest physical diligence, eating only foods that grew on their own, wearing clothes only made from trees, and bathing frequently in cold water.
    Politically, Flavius Josephus pleaded release from prison on the behalf of several fellow priests who were awaiting to be tried by Nero. He also openly opposed the Jewish revolt against Rome after seeing the power it flaunted, knowing the damage his people would receive from Rome's reaction.

    Josephus' Problem
    Algorithm description
    This algorithm is named for a historian of the first century, Flavius Josephus, who survived the Jewish-Roman war due to his mathematical talents. Legend has it that he was one out of 41 Jewish rebels trapped by the Romans. His companions preferred suicide to escape, so they decided to form a cycle and to kill every third person and to proceed around the circle until no one was left. Josephus wasn't excited by the idea of killing himself, so he calculated where he has to stand to survive the vicious circle. The following implementation demands the input of how many people will stand around a circle and how many shall be passed over before the next one is killed.
    Algorithm implementation:
    function josephus (N: positive; m: positive) return positive is x : positive; a : double; begin a := double(m); discrete d := 1 in 1..((m-1)*N) new d := ceiling((a/(a-1.0))*double(d)) loop d := ceiling((a/(a-1.0))*double(d)); x := d; end loop return m*N+1-x;

    Josephus
    Translator H. St. J. Thackeray
      Josephus, soldier, statesman, historian, was a Jew born at Jerusalem about 37 CE . A man of high descent, he early became learned in Jewish law and Greek literature and was a Pharisee. After pleading in Rome the cause of some Jewish priests he returned to Jerusalem and in 66 tried to prevent revolt against Rome, managing for the Jews the affairs of Galilee. In the troubles which followed he made his peace with Vespasian. Present at the siege of Jerusalem by Titus, he received favours from these two as emperors and from Domitian and assumed their family name Flavius. He died after 97. As a historical source Josephus is invaluable. His major works are: History of the Jewish War , in seven books, from 170 BCE to his own time, first written in Aramaic but translated by himself into the Greek we now have; and Jewish Antiquities , in twenty books, from the creation of the world to 66 CE . The Loeb Classical Library edition of the works of Josephus also includes the autobiographical Life and his treatise Against Apion

    Introduction
    The New Testament makes references to rulers, priests, religious factions, and politics that would be completely mysterious to modern readers if it were not for the works of Josephus. When one reads discussions about the historical Jesus and the early days of Christianity, most of the Judean social background and the dating of events derive from his books. In this article I present a list of these New Testament references and place them next to extracts from the works of Josephus on the same subject. To these I have added my own comments, which I hope the reader will find useful. Interested readers will want to study Josephus themselves for fuller extracts. They will also want to read some of the many scholarly works on this subject. An excellent place to start is Steve Mason's Josephus and the New Testament
