Fantasy Author Robert Jordan Passes Away

from the doff-our-helms dept. willith writes "James Oliver Rigney Jr, author of the long-running fantasy series The Wheel of Time and better known to millions of fans by the pen name Robert Jordan, died on 16 Sept 2007 from cardiac amyloidosis . Jordan announced he had been diagnosed with the disease in March 2006 and vowed to beat the odds, but determination and gumption sometimes just aren't enough in the face of a disease with a median survival time of just over two years. Jordan was in the process of writing the twelfth and final book in the Wheel of Time series, A Memory of Light , but the book was not slated for release until 2009 and is still incomplete. Yes.
What about the prequel novel New Spring
Yes. The update for both the prequel and the new book will be done all at once.
Cool! Um, when will it be up?
Not for a while. First I have to collect KOD discussion, theories, trivia, etc. from the newsgroup, which usually takes a couple of months to die down after the release date. Then I have to do the update, which is a fairly gigantic task that I do in my spare time. So, the answer is "it'll get done when it gets done." Or, I don't know how long it will take. But I promise to go as fast as I can.
Thanks! Now, what's the deal with the email?
NOW HEAR THIS: My pacbell email address is gone. The pacbell address that's given for my email on most of the FAQ (except this page) is officially defunct. PLEASE DO NOT EMAIL THAT ADDRESS ANYMORE, AIN'T NOBODY HOME. But! Now I have a shiny new email address for you to send to: Remove the spaces, obviously. Contact Us The Death and Legacy of Robert Jordan James Oliver Rigney, Jr. (1948-2007) By Leo Grin When bestselling author Robert Jordan died on September 16, 2007, it formed the second loss in as many years of a fantasy writer notable for an extreme prolificacy not only of words but of fans ( David Gemmell , author of nearly thirty popular books in the field, died July 28 last year, also coincidentally of heart trouble.) Both authors can be said to have left us far before their time, in the primes of their careers, and both left behind popular unfinished series (Gemmell's Troy trilogy , and of course Jordan's Wheel of Time saga). Unfortunately, the two authors share another sad trait: as memorials popped up from Jordan's friends and admirers, other corners of fandom, large corners, maintained a curious silence. For Jordan and Gemmell were popular writers, to a degree that breeds equal parts jealousy and critical scorn among elites. "If it sells, it's lightweight as hell," the saying might go, and if fans are waiting for awards committees and New York publishing cliques to consider these losses on a literary level, they'll be waiting a long time. We can expect the eventual (and, it is to be hoped, long-in-coming) demises of critical darlings like

Sexism and Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series

    Robert Jordan: Genius or Hack?
by Abby Goldsmith Page 1 of 3 Few critics and fans are able to agree on The Wheel of Time. Some say this series grows more exciting with each new volume. Others say that the first three or four books held promise and excitement before the series descended into a complex mess of boredom. Some view the female characters as being so strong that they believe Robert Jordan is actually a woman writing under a pen name; others say the women inhabitants of Randland (as fans refer to it) are dull caricatures of feminist extremists. Some fans are so obsessive that they’ve set up large-scale role playing games and sites of worship for ‘the Creator.’ There are also people hold Jordan in contempt for getting them hooked on something that- in their opinion- turned into a pile of crap. What is this monstrous work that has inspired so much contradiction? Is ‘the Creator’ a clueless copycat author, or a true genius?

Welcome to the web site of Robert Welsh Jordan, http://lamar.colostate.edu/~rwjordan/ that is to say, to my web site or sub-site, at Colorado State University. The web's content is work I have done over some forty-six years. The plan for the site is that it eventually include all of the essays that I have published. That would comprise the complete set of my published work. Luckily, there are not that many essays to be converted to usable web format. It will also include notes that are in some cases quite extensive on figures, terms, concepts and the like that are related to my work over the years. The most extensive of these are the notes on the work of Edmund Husserl ( Husserl Notes ) and those on the work of Martin Heidegger ( Heidegger Notes) I stand in a position that I myself consider to be very hard line phenomenology and that is very close to what I take to have been the considered view of Edmund Husserl by the mid 1920's and of Martin Heidegger from the same period throughout his career. Whoever checks into the matter at all carefully will find that my reading of Heidegger's work is seriously at odds with virtually all well known interpretations of it from 1930 or so onward. Should I be mistaken concerning this reading of the relevant works by Husserl and Heidegger, I shall very willingly albeit somewhat sadly take primary responsibility for the position and reject theirs so far as there is disagreement. For something resembling a synopsis of the principle theses of this position please see "
