7. Bold Type: June Jordan
June Jordan is a poet for whom political conviction exists in the same universe of moral effort as love.
http://www.randomhouse.com/boldtype/1197/jordan/
There aren't any streets or postal holidays named for June Jordan, but she's cherished by and collaborated with her own share of landmarks: she has planned a new Harlem with R. Buckminster Fuller, sipped coffee with Malcolm X, gotten teaching advice from Toni Cade Bambara, co-starred in a film with Angela Davis, and written an opera with John Adams and Peter Sellars. But no June Jordan Day. Yet.
If you're not yet familiar with June Jordan, award-winning author of no less than two dozen books, one of America's most extensively anthologized and prolific living poets, and one of the twentieth century's most critical activists and teachers, now is a good time to get acquainted. This month marks the publication of her twenty-fourth book, Kissing God Goodbye: New Poems 1991-1996, with a collection of political essays and a memoir soon to follow. Hers is a visionary voice, a trenchant, compassionate, and often humorous guide to the last years of the millenium.
Kissing God Goodbye speaks eloquently of what seem to be the twin preoccupations of an unusually generous, clear-sighted wordsmith: responsiveness to the world in which we live, and responsibility to each other as human beings. June Jordan is a poet for whom political conviction exists in the same universe of moral effort as love (erotic, familial, and humanistic love. The collection places explicitly, intensely political works, shoulder-to-shoulder with a cycle of powerful, affecting poems that address love and passion as their thematic centerpieces.

Daily Flashback: Lebron v. Jordan June 2nd, 2007
Jump to Comments By Doug Branson But the strange part about it was I couldn’t help but think that I had felt like this before. In fact, I felt like I had seen this kind of performance before. I have already stated my discontent with the immediate comparisons between LJ and MJ and the whole Pistons rivalry, but I had to admit to myself that this, at least, felt Jordan-esque. I just couldn’t put my finger on this severe case of sports deja-vu. Leave it to ESPN’s obscure stats to save the day. Shortly after the game was over they flashed the graphic showing the last time a player scored 48, 7, and 7 in a playoff game. Of course it was Jordan but the year and the opponent is what triggered memories I thought I had long buried. The date was April 28 th , 1995 and I was a young boy, growing up in Gastonia, North Carolina, cheering for my hometown Hornets to pull off an amazing upset, of sorts. The Hornets, a four-seed, had drew the fifth seeded Bulls in the first round. Jordan was back after his 18 month absence, but the Bulls still hadn’t gotten their team swagger back. The Hornets finished ahead of the Bulls in the regular season and looked poised to make their first long playoff run. I was elated and reserved at the same time. I just knew the key to taking down the Bulls was jumping on them early in the series.

Busy Week
So, I finished my three day Project Design and Management Workshop... which went really well and allowed me to almost completely finish writing my grant! However, it was amist the time when the three volunteers who are going home were leaving... which was rough!
We had a big going away get together and that was nice, and when the workshop was finished, i spent two days in Amman helping Kelly pack all her stuff up (heading back down to my village today).
One thing that was a big event this weekend... we were 5 minutes from completing the workshop when we decided to do this "copy me" follow the leader game. Well Josh, my village mate, being the ham of the group decides he is going to run and "slide" into home base in order to make another volunteer, ben, follow him. What happens, Josh hits the floor and dislocates his shoulder ending up going to the hospital and having it reset. He will be in a sling for the next 6 weeks! God love josh... but leave it to him!
Anyway, now heading back home to get back to village life (been gone for almost a week now... not sure what to do with myself when I get back... smile)

Results for June 2006 ...
June 10th / 11th Severn Valley All British Championship (Brookthorpe) Well, it was the hottest weekend this year so far. Very hard race conditions, but Jordan once again had a great weekend. He had Two holeshots and two very near holeshots and finished 6th overal. The 40 strong gate was full of top National riders so this was a massive result. Well done Jordan and happy birthday for this Friday, 10 years old! June 24th / 25th Torrington BSMA Best of British Championship Round 3 Saturday, qualifying went wrong! Jordan fell off, then I had to stop him to give advice, he then went out and somehow the sprocket guard twisted and got in the way of the gear lever. So after only completing two laps instead of Six Jordan qualified 23rd. Race 1, it became apparant Jorday was struggling to ride the track well enough to make good progress after a poor start, he finnished 17th. Race 2 was better, he had a good start and was in eith place for a short time, he raced hard but could only manage 14th place. Sunday, Jordan looked fast in practice, but said the bike was not reving well, so we changed bikes for the first race. It did not go as well as practice and he finnished 16th.

Rambling thoughts from Egypt
On Politics and Reform in the Middle East
Egyptians are speaking out plainly about the trouble with their government. This is a big change from a few years ago when a talk about politics usually meant a litany of perhaps well-deserved wrongs of America in the Middle East, particularly Palestine.
The amount that people spoke of domestic corruption, dictatorship and repression was striking. It seems many people, from taxi drivers to white collar employees to development NGO representatives are completely fed up at the democratic farce that took place in Egypt this past winter. The past year has seen unprecedented public criticism of the government, and now that the government sees it has a green light to crack down, people don't want to stop criticizing. It seems it's a habit they have gotten used to.
It was surprising how little anyone, even professional political thinkers, wanted to talk about regional issues. The focus was squarely on Egypt and the changes that have occurred, or should occur in the country.

Clubhouse laughter!
Many in this group were virgins to a caricature and client wanted full color!
During this event, I had a dragonfly flying around the room with my client handling the remote and a few times the DF would dive close to my easel. It certainly was play time with this crowd and I didn't mind at all! They enjoyed any type of humour, especially with my work!
The lighting was bad for some of the photos I took. Also, many of the kids ran into the pool, before I can get a group shot with cartoon. Some returned with hair wet and I snapped away, but the creation is what it's all about! And a few pulled out a photos of their pet for me to add in drawing!
This crowd really had fun watching me doodle their cartoon! One lady said, "I could watch her all day," as she giggled!
