Ben Jonson
The tumultuous life of Ben Jonson began in London on June 11, 1572. His clergyman father died before he was born, but his mother remarried to a bricklayer. Jonson attended Westminster School before joining his stepfather in the bricklaying trade. Bricklaying did not suit Jonson, so after a stint in the army he joined a theatre company run by Philip Henslowe.

The thirst that from the soul doth rise Doth ask a drink divine; But might I of Jove's nectar sup, I would not change for thine. - I sent thee late a rosy wreath, Not so much honouring thee As giving it a hope that there It could not wither'd be; But thou thereon didst only breathe And sent'st it back to me; Since when it grows, and smells, I swear, Not of itself but thee! - - THE END

Plays and Masques by Ben Jonson
In 1616, Ben Jonson (eight years Shakespeare's junior) published a collection of his works, a move widely ridiculed due to the fact that in Jacobean England, plays had little to no literary value. That same year (the year of Shakespeare's death) he was given a lifetime pension by James I of England, becoming, in essence, the first Poet Laureate. Seven years later, Shakespeare's partners published his works in a single volume collection (generally referred to as the First Folio.) Jonson was a popular poet and playwright, and worked often as an actor and playwright for Shakespeare's company, the Lord Chamberlain's Men (later the King's Men.) He became fond of the emerging theatrical form of the Masque, a courtly drama that employed a great deal of spectacle... closer in heart to opera than a play. With his partnership with the great architecht and designer Inigo Jones, Jonson created many popular masques. The following texts were culled from the University of Michigan the Luminarium , and from Paul J. Dupuy, Jr.'s

57. Ben Jonson And Cervantes*
Yumiko Yamada suggests that while many studies of Cervantes make connections to Shakespeare, the connection to jonson deserves more critical attention.
http://www.uv.es/~fores/YamadaYumiko.uk.html
Ben Jonson and Cervantes by Yumiko Yamada
As the title shows, this book aims to find analogies between Ben Jonson and Cervantes , by seeing how the leading humanist of the age would have read and responded to Don Quixote A common reaction to this might be "Why Ben Jonson, not Shakespeare?" Ever since Turgenev's celebrated lecture at a Paris in 1860, Shakespeare has been most closely linked with Don Quixote . The bond was tightened this century by Ortega in 1914 and Foucault (1966). [ Don Quixote King Lear and Macbeth were written in the selfsame year of 1605", he asserts, in ecstasy at the revelation that the two writers in fact are one and the same person, and that Cervantes created Shakespeare's plays in England, while Shakespeare composed Don Quixote in Spain. [ Turning our eyes to the academic field, almost all Cervantes studies refer to Shakespeare, and it is equally hard, it might be added, to find studies mentioning Jonson. [ ] Now that the pairing of the twin geniuses has been established as if irrefutable fact, it is a Herculean task to insert Jonson in the place of Shakespeare. If we suspend our preconceptions and observe the historical background, we may find the bond between Cervantes and Shakespeare weaker than it looks. The first thing to notice is that Jonson, not Shakespeare, was first connected with Cervantes, as a writer who possessed analogous values and principles.

Ben Jonson Poetry
Ben Jonson (1572 -1637) Ben Jonson was one of the leading literary figures of his day, Johnson was an associate of Shakespeare and J.Donne . He was an accomplished playwright and critic. He was born in 1572, the son of a clergy but his father died before he was born. Educated at Westminster School he left to join his step-fathers trade of being a brick layer. However he did not like this so joined the army. On his return from Flanders he married and earned his living from joining a theatrical group and writing plays. In 1597 he was imprisoned for his part in writing the play “The Isle of Dogs” the play was considered seditious by the authorities. After being released for this crime Johnson got involved in a duel and killed the other partner. He was tried at the Old Bailey for murder and narrowly escaped the gallows. During this time he converted to Roman Catholicism which became increasingly unpopular after the gunpowder plot of 1605. Ben Jonson had a fiery temprement and could be harsh critic of fellow play writers. However his plays, especially comedies such as "Volpone, or the Fox" were widely regarded. In 1616 he was appointed
