Erica Jong and Kucinich
Erica Jong: We Deserve What We Get This column is not about Hillary vs. Obama vs. Edwards. The truth is if I had the choice I'd vote for Dennis Kucinich because he's against the war, for the impeachment of war criminals in government, smart on the environment and the economy, and he has a sense of humor about UFOS. He's not afraid to joke about 'em for fear he'll be labeled a nutcase as indeed he was.
But I don't have that option. Kucinich represents my views, but he only got 1% in New Hampshire. Too bad.
I want to talk not about candidates but about our media turning every presidential election into a high school popularity contest. And we let them get away with it. And we don't stop Rupert Murdoch, Clear Channel, Disney, GE, Sumner Redstone and a few others from owning all the media all the time.

Erica Jong's crazy talk.
Fear of Flying feminist author Erica Jong seems to have broken into the liquor cart at Huffington Airlines and is now seeing "pink men" as the route of all evil in the world:
"I am so tired of pink men bombing brown children and rationalizing it as fighting terrorism. I am so tired of pink men telling women (of all colors) what to do with their wombswhich connect with their brainsin case you forgot."
You get the idea. See does throw in a token remark about men of other colors:
"And by the way some brown men and tan men and wheaten men do these things too."
No really? You don't say . But, it's the pink men Jong has a problem with.
"Don't tell me about women who kill. I know there are somebut fewer
Here Jong puts her hands over her ears and sings la, la, la loudly As Jong ignores the mother here in D.C. discovered living a house with the decomposing bodies of here four children in the upstairs rooms. They were possessed according to the woman. At least this woman did not blame the pink men as Jong does. Jong also does not want to hear about how woman can be as corrupt as men once they get into positions of power. It's only the pink men who can't be trusted. Yeah, right as this tale of corruption shows . Obviously an intervention is in order. I think Margaret Thatcher, Imelda Marcos and Joan of Arc need to slap some sense into Jong and stop this feminist crazy talk..

The Devil at Large: Erica Jong on Henry Miller.
"I sometimes ask myself how it happens that I attract nothing but crackbrained individuals, neurasthenics, neurotics, psychopaths psy·cho·path (s k -p th and Jews especially," wrote Henry Miller in Tropic of Cancer Tropic of Cancer, . This was, of course, in the 1930s. Ahead of his time though Miller may have been in many ways, it is too much of a strain on credibility to suppose that he had anything like The Devil at Large: Erica Jong on Henry Miller in mind. In fact it is too much of a strain on credibility to suppose that anyone other than Erica Jong could ever have had anything like this book in mind, for the simple reason that no one else could possibly devote as much time, space, and worshipful attention to the oeuvre and ideology of Erica Jong as Erica Jong does in The Devil at Large.
This work, as the dust-jacket blurb that appears under the de rigueur photograph of Jong grinning like a lunatic notes, is the author's "first full-length work of nonfiction." It purports, as the author explains in her introduction, to be "an unconventional bookpart memoir, part critical study, part biography, part exploration of sexual politics in our time." It is, as noted above, like most of Jong's full-length works of fiction, insofar as such merits as it does possess are ultimately squashed flat as a pancake by the dead weight of the author's self-enchantment.

http://www.paulagordon.com/shows/jong/
The Paula Gordon Show "Beyond Fear" Erica Jong is known the world over (literally) for her 1970's book Fear of Flying . When she wrote her mid-life memoir, she called it Fear of Fifty . Why all the fear? Because Jong believes each of us live our lives facing a lot of it. Our challenge is to overcome, not to let fear control us. Jong wrote each of her novels in the grips of what she calls terror that she couldn't get the book right, that nobody would publish the book, once written. Or worse, no one would read it. Her solution? Overcome fear by pushing beyond it. Jong, who's name is strongly identified with the struggle for women's equality, worries that women worldwide are stalled in an unfinished revolution. She sees them limited by fear and self-silencing. Until we cement the underpinnings of women's freedom reproductive freedom and economic equality the revolution will not be over. We're not even close. Jong came to celebrity at a time when the sexual revolution and feminism were bubbling up on America. "Somebody had to be the voice for women. I knew from the beginning that was my job," she declares. She continues in that voice as she plots the rest of her creative career facing the fears of discovering the second half of women's lives. Until recently, these stories were left untold because women writers (Austin and Bronte are Jong's choices) died young. Jong-as-artist has only one secret start every new book as a beginner. She is forever surprised that each book turns into something quite different from what she intended. "The exciting things are always unbidden."

"Maybe the Muse is a supernatural being. But I think there are forces we have no way of scientifically codifying, and inspiration is one of them."
In Conversations with Erica Jong one of the most popular and controversial of contemporary writers has her say. She was already an established poet when she published Fear of Flying (1973), but the novel's sensational reception came to overshadow all her work. In interviews from 1973 to 2001, Jong relates the extra-ordinary experience she gained as a pioneer of sexual writing from a female point of view. With equal attention to the art of fiction and poetry, she yields her views on the literary scene and on the place of poetry in American society. Among the highlights of the book is Jong's account of the publication of Fear of Flying and its remarkable, best-seller rise. Cast into the role of spokesperson for feminism in the seventies, she has continued to represent her generation of women. In several conversations, she talks about the tensions within feminism over the decades.

    INTRODUCTION
Best known for her novel Fear of Flying , Jong has received both popular and critical recognition for her frank, satirical treatment of sexuality. Her works have been interpreted both as pioneering efforts in the movement toward an authentic and free expression of female sexuality and, according to an anonymous reviewer in Kirkus Reviews , as "porn with a literary veneer." Some critics have noted that attention to the risque elements of Jong's fiction has eclipsed her treatment of serious social issues in her fiction and poetry.
