Parallel Studies in American/Afro-American Literature, Part II “Black and White Images in Alienation”
by
Robert Johnson Moore
Contents of Curriculum Unit 79.01.08:
To Guide Entry
Rationale
This unit, in keeping with the purpose of its antecedent developed last year, points out parallels in selected writings of white and black American writers who, under the same canopy of creative and humanistic expressions, share interests in the same themes, experiment with similar writing styles, and find themselves facing the same artistic conundrums. This particular section examines the theme of alienation in the poetry of T. S. Eliot and LeRoi Jones. Hardly contemporaries, these two poets from diverse racial and cultural backgrounds are spiritual kinsmen—soul brothers—for their visions of the modern age interface on the same plane. Whereas Eliot was the prophet of the apprehensive twenties, of its innate fear of a technological age on the brink of war, Jones became the oracle of the explosive sixties, of its rage at an insensitive world that systematically exploited black people. A careful study of the poetry of Eliot and Jones reveals that one decade was the harbinger of the other. Note: This course, designed for high-ability juniors and seniors, demands a keen interest in poetry.

Urban Poetry: The Black Arts Movement Unite, Barbara Jones, 1971 About the Author Bob Eisberg is a sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade language arts literacy teacher in the citywide honors program at Forest Hill Elementary School in Camden, N.J., an inner-city community near Philadelphia. He previously was a reporter and editor at the Philadelphia Daily News and other newspapers. “Forging the 20 th Century Urban Identity” is Mr. Eisberg’s fourth National Endowment for the Humanities summer seminar or institute. Attending these summer programs has allowed him to pursue detailed study of various themes in literature and history, to develop new approaches to teaching and learning, and to build bridges with some of the most accomplished and passionate teacher-scholars in the country.
Unit Objectives
As in other parts of Urban Poetry unit, students should master the following objectives in the study of the Black Arts Movement: Analyze authors’ motives for writing specific poems. Identify the connection between themes and images in specific poems, particularly as they relate to urban life. Compare and contrast themes in poems, not only among poems of the era, but with poems of previous and later periods.

In his early roles as poet, dramatist, radical organizer, and spokesperson for African-American causes, LeRoi Jones’s public, outspoken, and sometimes fiery side provided many opportunities to be misunderstood. Surely that was the impetus for Jones, who changed his name to Amiri Baraka, to write The Autobiography of LeRoi Jones/Amiri Baraka , a detailed account of the first forty years of his life. Baraka shows the connections between diverse personal and public worlds in nine chapters. The first eight chapters segment significant stages in Baraka’s...
