Hayley Foss is an orphan living in London with her Grandparents. Her Grandma is a stickler for rules, and hardly ever even lets Hayley out of the house. When Hayley meets a curious pair of musicians she calls Flute and Fiddle on an excursion with the maid, her Grandma goes ape, and sends Hayley off to the family castle in Ireland. There she meets a grand assortment of cousins and aunts though oddly enough no uncles.

Arianhrod ("Roddy") Hyde is the daughter of a weather magician at the Court of the King of Blest. She and her young friend Grundo discover a plot involving Grundo's unpleasant mother and her new boyfriend as well as the new Merlin of Blest. The rest of her family becomes enchanted in various ways and unable to move against this plot. Roddy and Grundo become separated from the Progress of the Court (the King cannot stay in any one place for long) and they gad across Blest, looking for help from Roddy's two powerful Grandfathers, and her eccentric Grandmother.

David's daughter thinks this book is better than Harry Potter. High praise, indeed, coming from someone who has ingested the work of J.K. Rowling to the point where it is part of her very soul. The author is widely considered an unheralded forerunner of the Potter phenomenon, in particular for using a Wizards School setting for coming-of-age tribulations.

Diana Wynne Jones: Children's Literature and the Fantastic Tradition by Farah Mendlesohn
      Reviewed by Lesley A. Hall
01 June 2006 What a great pleasure it is to read a work of genuinely creative criticism, one that isn't about scoring points against its subject but an act of appreciation and interpretation. Farah Mendlesohn's study of Diana Wynne Jones is a delight to read in itself, and also the kind of critical study that sends one galloping back to the books themselves with new and exciting insights. It doesn't simply reinforce one's initial fondness for the works; it sheds new and stimulating light (and in one or two instances, identifies nuances and subtleties this reader had managed to miss through several re-readings). Mendlesohn makes a well-substantiated case for the sophistication of Jones's fantastic fiction and in particular for its function as a "sustained metafictional critical response to the fantastic" (p. xiii). She draws attention to the permeability of boundaries that arises when discussing this author: between science fiction and fantasy, between literature-intended-for-younger- and literature-intended-for-older-readers. Her invocation of terms such as remixing, reworking, and translation reminds us that it is possible to write freshly even while "raiding the stock-cupboard" for previously used themes, situations and characters. As Mendlesohn points out in the introduction, multiple interpretations are possible for any of Jones's books, and many studies could be written about the themes of her work and its different aspects. Mendlesohn has chosen to look not at "what Jones writes about" but "how she writes about what she writes" and to base each of her chapters around a different grouping of texts. While this leads to a certain amount of overlap, it serves to emphasise the richness and depths of the texts in question.

Diana Wynne Jones is a British writer of fantasy novels and short stories. Most of her works are for children, but some of her recent works are more suitable for adults. Wynne Jones has been writing wonderful books for years, but has never achieved the fame of other authors such as that of JK Rowling. There have never been more than a few of her books in print at any one time. Now in the wake of Rowling's success, the publishing companies (at the time of writing) are biting the bullet and reprinting many of Wynne Jones's works. Some Biography Diana Wynne Jones was born in London, England. She grew up during the Second World War. In these strange times, Diana and her sisters had a disturbed upbringing, often being looked after by grandparents, by a group of Anglican nuns and by a group of mothers, while her parents worked. Although she was an avid reader, she had very little access to books, especially children's books. She has said that the reason she writes only fantasy is that her own childhood was so peculiar that she could not write about normal life, because she has no idea what normality is.

Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones About this title: Diana Wynne Jones is celebrated for her clever and humorous subversion of fairy tale and fantasy novel tropes, and she is at the top of her form in this charming YA novel. Sophie, the eldest of three daughters, has dutifully resigned herself to a dull life running a hat shop. But when she runs afoul of the evil magic of the powerful and testy Witch of the Waste, her life becomes very interesting indeed. The Witch's curse turns Sophie from a young woman into an old one. In shock and desperation, Sophie finagles herself a job as housekeeper in the Moving Castle belonging to Howl, a wizard with ... read more Note: This is a general synopsis. Expect the unexpected
As usual, you never know what's going to happen in a Diana Wynne Jones novel. This one is told from the point of view of several characters, notably Rupert Venables, a magid (a sort of mage encharged with maintaining balance in the multiverse) and Maree, a young woman who is (unbeknownst to her) a candidate for becoming a new magid. Rupert is new to his work, having only been a magid for two years, but when his teacher dies, it is up to him to find a replacement. He is given a list of possibilities to investigate, but that investigation is difficult to pursue because he must also help out a government on the verge of collapse in another world. It doesn't help that Maree finds Rupert impossibly stuffy, and he thinks she is preposterous and annoying; they suddenly find that they are going to have to work together to find a way out of a very dangerous situation.
It sounds utterly far-fetched and complicated, but trust me - Jones will suck you into the story, and it will make complete sense. She takes seemingly unconnected plot threads and weaves them beautifully into a storyline that leads all the characters to PhantasmaCon, a science fiction convention that is an affectionate homage to all such conventions and their colorful attendees. When unbelievable and fantastic events occur there (such as the sudden appearance of a wounded centaur in their midst), no one bats an eye - they all assume things are part of the convention ("Wow, fantastic costume!").
