Diana Wynne Jones
I think I write the kind of books I do because the world suddenly went mad when I was five years old. In late August 1939, on a blistering hot day, my father loaded me and my three-year-old sister, Isobel, into a friend’s car and drove to my grandparents’ manse in Wales. "There’s going to be a war," he explained. He went straight back to London, where my mother was expecting her third baby any day. We were left in the austere company of Mam and Dad (as we were told to call them). Dad, who was a moderator of the Welsh Nonconformist Chapels, was a stately patriarch; Mam was a small browbeaten lady who seemed to us to have no character at all. We were told that she was famous in her youth for her copper hair, her wit, and her beauty, but we saw no sign of any of this. Wales could not have been more different from our new house in Hadley Wood on the outskirts of London. It was all grey or very green and the houses were close together and dun-coloured. The river ran black with coal – and probably always had, long before the mines: they told me the name of the place meant "bridge over the river with the black voice." Above all, everybody spoke a foreign language. Sometimes we were taken up the hill into suddenly primitive country to meet wild-looking raw-faced old people who spoke no English, for whom our shy remarks had to be translated. Everyone spoke English to us, and would switch abruptly to Welsh when they wanted to say important things to one another. They were kind to us, but not loving. We were Aneurin’s English daughters and not quite part of their culture.

Welcome!
Welcome to Chrestomanci Castle, a fan site for Diana Wynne Jones. If you are new to Diana Wynne Jones (perhaps you were introduced to her work through the Miyazaki film Howl's Moving Castle Movie / Hauru no Ugoku Shiro ?), come in, have a look around. Learn more about her books , contribute to the wiki , or join the mailing list Imaginary Letters "Dear Deborah," asks my imaginary letter-writer. "Why is this site both Chrestomanci Castle and Travels in the Land of Ingary? And why do you occasionally call Kingsbury 'Kingsport'?" Well, imaginary letter writer, let me explain. Back in the old days, when puppies were the oldest animals, we didn't have these fancy things called "web design" and "standards for content". This was back in 1995, and basically, we just spewed whatever the heck we wanted onto pages. Let's face it, back then, nobody was online but geeks, students, and AOL-users, so nobody with any standards for quality. But now we seem to be coming up to our tenth anniversary ! Oh my goodness. Let's see if I can bring this page into the 21st century, eh what?

Search Authors Search Books About Diana Wynne Jones Diana Wynne Jones was raised in the village of Thaxted, in Essex, England. She has been a compulsive storyteller for as long as she can remember enjoying most ardently those tales dealing with witches, hobgoblins, and the like. Ms. Jones lives in Bristol, England, with her husband, a professor of English at Bristol University. They have three sons and two granddaughters. In Her Own Words... "I decided to be a writer at the age of eight, but I did not receive any encouragement in this ambition until thirty years later. I think this ambition was fired-or perhaps exacerbated is a better word-by early marginal contacts with the Great, when we were evacuated to the English Lakes during the war. The house we were in had belonged to Ruskin's secretary and had also been the home of the children in the books of Arthur Ransome. One day, finding I had no paper to draw on, I stole from the attic a stack of exquisite flower-drawings, almost certainly by Ruskin himself, and proceeded to rub them out. I was punished for this. Soon after, we children offended Arthur Ransome by making a noise on the shore beside his houseboat. He complained. So likewise did Beatrix Potter, who lived nearby. It struck me then that the Great were remarkably touchy and unpleasant (even if, in Ruskin's case, it was posthumous), and I thought I would like to be the same, without the unpleasantness.

Her philosophy of writing for young people developed from the unpleasantness of her childhood. Besides being displaced several times after 1939 because of the onset of World War II, Jones endured parental neglect. By 1943, when her parents settled in rural Essex to manage a conference/cultural center, they chose to reside apart from their three daughters. The girls were housed in an uncomfortable two-room hut with little entertainment, so Jones turned to writing her own stories. ... Order Aunt Maria Order other books by Jones, Diana Wynne

    maidm Hello there!
I haven been thinking about a while and I was wondering if anyone would be interested in a Diana Wynne Jones roleplay community. As a lot of her books are about different worlds, it would be pretty darn easy to work out a scenario for characters from pretty much any of her books to inter-mingle, and I think it would be fun to try out.
Anyway, I guess I just sort of want to poll a bit and see if there's any interest before I think about starting one, or if someone else wants to that'd be super.
Anyone have any ideas of a scenario/location/reason for everyone to end up in one place? Want to claim a character right away? I'd appreciate any feedback.
Cheers! link 8 comments post comment Hello all!! 12:42 am
Hi, I've just joined this community but I've been reading Diana's books for quite a few years already. Can't really get my friends to be interested in her books so I'm really happy to have found this place where I can discuss bout the books I've read. I particularly like her Chrestomanci series. =) Ok, enough ramblings. I actually have a couple of questions that have been niggling me for quite some time. =P

Outside of a Dog: Kate Nepveu's Book Log
Friday, September 7, 2001 I wanted to like Howl's Moving Castle , by Diana Wynne Jones . A friend recommended it to me, the bit of the beginning I read in the bookstore had charm and felt a bit like John Barnes' wonderful One for the Morning Glory , and having the protagonist turned into an old woman by an evil witch seemed like a promising start for a fantasy novel. Unfortunately, there's too much about this book that I just don't believe. The first example came just a few hours after Sophie is enchanted: A countryman came whistling down the lane toward her. A shepherd, Sophie thought, going home after seeing to his sheep. He was a well-set-up young fellow of forty or so. "Gracious!" Sophie said to herself. "This morning I'd have seen him as an old man. How one's point of view does alter!" I don't know about anyone else, but if I were magically transformed into an elderly woman by an evil witch, I don't think I'd be already thinking like an old woman

    Conrad, Latin king of Jerusalem
Conrad, d. 1192, Latin king of Jerusalem (1192), marquis of Montferrat, a leading figure in the Third Crusade (see Crusades). He saved Tyre from the Saracens and became (1187) its lord. In 1189 he joined Guy of Lusignan at the siege of Akko, but a year later he sought to displace Guy as king of Jerusalem. To establish a claim to the crown he married Isabella, daughter of Amalric I. To quote the review of the hardcover in KLIATT, May 2005: Stallery Mansion looms high in the English Alps above the town of Stallchester, where a 12-year-old boy named Conrad lives with his mother and his uncle. He wants to go to Upper School, but instead his uncle sends him off to Stallery to become a page boy, insisting that he must work off his bad karma karma /kar·ma/ ( kahr´mah ) [Sanskrit] in Indian philosophy, the total effect of a person's actions, both mental and physical, on his or her existence; a person's present state, including health, is determined by actions from previous existence, and present actions determine their destiny for future existence.
