Life of Milton
By Samuel Johnson
Edited by Jack Lynch
The text comes from G. B. Hill's edition of Lives of the English Poets , 3 vols. (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1905); the notes, including unattributed translations, are my own. Explanatory and Textual Notes appear at the end of the Life . An abridged edition , roughly half the length of this text, is also available. Send corrections and comments to Jack Lynch The Life of Milton has been already written in so many forms and with such minute enquiry that I might perhaps more properly have contented myself with the addition of a few notes to Mr. Fenton's elegant Abridgement, but that a new narrative was thought necessary to the uniformity of this edition JOHN MILTON was by birth a gentleman, descended from the proprietors of Milton near Thame in Oxfordshire, one of whom forfeited his estate in the times of York and Lancaster. Which side he took I know not; his descendant inherited no veneration for the White Rose His grandfather John was keeper of the forest of Shotover, a zealous papist who disinherited his son, because he had forsaken the religion of his ancestors. His father, John, who was the son disinherited, had recourse for his support to the profession of a scrivener. He was a man eminent for his skill in musick, many of his compositions being still to be found; and his reputation in his profession was such that he grew rich, and retired to an estate. He had probably more than common literature, as his son addresses him in one of his most elaborate Latin poems. He married a gentlewoman of the name of Caston, a Welsh family, by whom he had two sons, John the poet, and Christopher who studied the law, and adhered, as the law taught him, to

Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) , oft-quoted biographer, poet and lexicographer wrote A Dictionary of the English Language (1755), published in two folio volumes. In his time it was the most comprehensive English language dictionary ever compiled and remained the standard reference for over a century. The first edition included a “Grammar and History of the English Language” and thousands of quotations from such authors as John Dryden William Shakespeare and John Milton to illustrate the use of the over 42,000 words it contained—many more were added in subsequent editions. At a time when literacy rates were improving and the realm of print media was expanding at a rapid pace, pamphlets, newspapers and magazines were becoming available at a reasonable cost. So, standard spellings, uses and meanings of words such as ‘Cough: A convulsion of the lungs, vellicated by some sharp serosity. It is pronounced coff’

Another chance to see the prize-giving: Saturday 23 June 2007 2.40am-3.40am (Friday night) Imperial Life in the Emerald City , a startling account of life in Baghdad's Green Zone, is the winner of the BBC Four Samuel Johnson Prize for Non-Fiction for 2007. Its author, Rajiv Chandrasekaran , receives a cheque for £30,000. More details on the official Samuel Johnson Prize website Baroness Helena Kennedy, the Chair of the judges, announced the winner at an awards ceremony held at London’s Savoy Hotel. She commented: "Imperial Life in the Emerald City is up there with the greatest reportage of the last 50 years – as fine as Hershey on Hiroshima and Capote’s In Cold Blood. The writing is cool, exact and never overstated and in many places very humorous as the jaw-dropping idiocy of the American action is revealed. Chandrasekaran stands back, detached and collected, from his subject but his reader is left gobsmacked, right in the middle of it." Now in its ninth year, The BBC FOUR Samuel Johnson Prize for Non-Fiction celebrates originality and diversity in contemporary non-fiction. Named in honour of the great critic, essayist, lexicographer, poet and biographer, the BBC FOUR Samuel Johnson Prize is the world’s richest prize for non-fiction, recognising works published in English in the UK, regardless of the nationality of the author.

Portrait of Samuel Johnson Usually known as Dr Johnson English lexicographer (writer of dictionaries), author, and critic. He was also a brilliant conversationalist and dominant figure in 18th-century London literary society. His Dictionary (1755) provided the pedigree for subsequent lexicography and remained authoritative for over a century. In 1764 he founded, at the suggestion of the English painter Joshua Reynolds , a club, known from 1779 as the Literary Club, whose members at various times included also the Irish political philosopher Edmund Burke , the Irish dramatist Oliver Goldsmith , the English actor David Garrick , and Scottish writer James Boswell , Johnson's biographer.

Profile
Samuel Johnson was born in Lichfield , Staffordshire, the son of a bookseller whose shop was in the Market Square. When he was five years old he went for English lessons at Dame Oliver's School, Dam Street. After attending the Grammar Schools in Lichfield and Stourbridge he went on to Pembroke College, Oxford. Although a bright student, he suffered from mental stress, not helped by his poverty at this time and his poor eyesight and he left after just over a year. He worked as a teacher in Market Bosworth before moving to Birmingham , where he lived for three years. Here he met Elizabeth Porter, whom he was later to marry. She was twenty years older than Samuel, had already raised a family by a previous marriage and was financially secure. He wrote for the Birmingham Journal and completed his first published book, A voyage to Abyssinia (1735), a translation from a French book of travels. Following their marriage Samuel and Elizabeth set up a school at Edial , near Lichfield but this was not a success. One of Samuel's pupils was David Garrick and together they went to London in 1737, Johnson to write for

Now restored to its original condition, the house contains panelled rooms, a pine staircase, and a collection of period furniture, prints and portraits. Situated to the north of Fleet Street, the house is found among a maze of courtyards and passages that are a reminder of historic London. Wednesday 13 February 2008, 7pm

Introduction
Print this section Samuel Johnson (1709-1784), English writer and lexicographer, a major figure in 18th-century literature as an arbiter of taste, renowned for the force and balance of his prose style. II
Early Life
Print this section Johnson, usually referred to as Dr. Johnson by his contemporaries and later generations, was born in Lichfield on September 18, 1709, the son of a bookseller. He attended the local school, but his real education was informal, conducted primarily among his father's books as he read and studied the classics, which influenced his style greatly. In 1728 Johnson entered Pembroke College at the University of Oxford. A brilliant but eccentric young man, he was plagued by a variety of ailments from which he suffered the rest of his life. He left in poverty, without taking a degree and having suffered the first of two emotional breakdowns. During this time of despondency his reading of devotional literature led him to a profound religious faith.

Obsessive Thinking, Compulsive Behaviors
Vijai P. Sharma, Ph.D. Clinical Psychologist This is the 2nd article in a series of eight on obsessive-compulsive disorder Normally, when we "wash our hands of something," it means, "Finito!" We are done with it! We don't go back and recheck it. But what is it when you do it over and over again, and you are still not done with it? Such is often the case with OCD sufferers. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder can be a crippling disease. However, in other cases, OCD sufferers may lead successful lives with habits that may be annoying but not incapacitating. OCD is known to afflict many famous and leading figures in the past as well as the present. Dr. Samuel Johnson, accredited with compiling the first dictionary of the English language, suffered from a compulsion of "odd movements." Johnson would perform highly ritualized movements and antics when passing over the threshold of a door. Just before crossing the threshold, he would whirl, twist, make highly ritualized hand motions and then jump over the threshold in a long leap. He would never step on cracks between paving stones. When he went for a walk, he touched every post he passed. If he missed one, he went back to touch it.
