Spanish poet who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1956. Jiménez made his birthplace Moguer in Southern Spain famous by his series of prose poems of a young writer and his donkey, PLATERO Y YO (1914, Platero and I), one of the classics of modern Spanish literature. Jiménez's early poetry was ornamental, romantic, and often filled with dreams of love. During his second period, from 1917, he wrote "naked" poetry, in which the images were reduced to their essence. A central theme in Jiménez's work was the oneness and beauty of the world.
el nombre exacto de las cosas!
... Que mi palabra sea
la cosa misma,
creada por mi alma nuevamente.
Vida nueva , a Madrid review. He became a member of the modernist literary circles and founded two literary reviews, Helios (1902) and Renacimiento Platero and I . Platero follows the poet on his trips to town and to countryside, its silent company is a contrast to the poet's ecstatic linguistic observations. After Platero's death he visits its grave and asks, "do you still remember me?" - it is the donkey who is supposed to remember, not the poet. Jiménez's poetic output was immense. His better-known works include SONETOS ESPIRITUALES 1914-1915 (1916), PIEDRA Y CIELO (1919), POESÍA, EN VERSO, 1917-1923 (1923), POESÍA EN PROSA Y VERSO (1932), VOCES DE MI COPLA (1945), ANIMAL DE FONDO (1947). LA ESTASIÓN TOTAL (1946), which appeared in Buenos Aires, was ignored in Spain. Jiménez's last book was DIOS DESENDO Y DISEANTE (1949, God Desired and Desiring), a testament and identification with all that is beautiful and creative in nature. As a Platonist, Jiménez believed in a universal consciousness that existed apart from individual consciousness. Colors and music were central to his work. In one poem Jiménez compared music to a "naked woman, running wildly in a clear night."

Links Juan Ramon Jimenez was the son of a banker. He grew up in Moguer, a beautiful region of Spain that deeply imprinted itself on the poet. Jimenez studied painting at the University of Seville before abandoning his schoolwork to dedicate himself completely to writing.
In the early 1900s, Jimenez composed several collections of poetry, and he also translated the work of Hindu poet Rabindranath Tagore into Spanish (with Zenobia Camprubi, who later became his wife). Later in his career he also became an influential literary critic. (Despite his great poetic work, in the US Jimenez first gained notoriety for his novel Platero y yo/Platero and I.)
When the Spanish Civil War broke out, he was sent by the Republican faction to the US as an honorary cultural attache. When the fascist forces under Franco took control of Spain, Jimenez and his wife settled in Puerto Rico and Cuba.
Themes of nature, depths, immensity, death, darkness, secret life, and transcendence appear in many of his poems. The spirituality reflected in his poetry is deeply personal, mystical, and transformative.

http://www.pemmicanpress.com/articles/jimenez.html
Timothy Young Juan Ramon Jimenez: Substance in the Moment Juan Ramon Jimenez. His name rolls off the tongue with natural fluidity. His poetry bursts like water off creek rocks, evaporating into mist and ions jettisoned by an earthy spirituality. Jimenez did not write of politics, religion or evil, per se. He focused on the beauty he found in the moment. That beauty had physicality, spirituality and history, which he did not ignore in his poems. In Juan Ramon's poems, history is an adverb that modifies the moment. He stopped his judgmental rationality in order to absorb the secrets of the moment, of the natural universe and the creations around him. In his 1956 essay, To Burn Completely , written near the end of his life and after his wife had died, after he had stopped writing poetry, he explained: When we contemplate things and beings, when we love them and enjoy them, when we have their confidence, having given them ours; when we concern ourselves with them through our complete consciousness and as complete consciousness, they manifest their content to us, we shall possess their most profound secrets and thus they will be able to offer themselves to us as an ideal, for perhaps the ideal may be a secret of which the most loving are worthy.
