Shine Perishing Republic
While this America settles in the mold of its vulgarity, heavily thickening to empire,
And protest, only a bubble in the molten mass, pops and sighs out, and the mass hardens,
I sadly smiling remember that the flower fades to make fruit, the fruit rots to make earth.
Out of the mother; and through the spring exultances, ripeness and decadence; and home to the mother.
You making haste, haste on decay: not blameworthy; life is good, be it stubbornly long or suddenly
A mortal splendor: meteors are not needed less than mountains: shine, perishing republic.
But for my children, I would have them keep their distance from the thickening center; corruption
And boys, be in nothing so moderate as in love of man, a clever servant, insufferable master.
There is the trap that catches noblest spirits, that caught-they say-God, when he walked on earth.
Robinson Jeffers

Those who know history are only too aware that all empires decline and fall, whether they be Egyptian, Greek, Roman, English, or American. It is only a matter of time before ours, too, falls, though some may find some small comfort in the fact that this poem was written almost 75 years ago; so our decline may not be as "meteoric" as Jeffers envisioned.

Index Numerous American poets of stature and genuine vision arose in the years between the world wars, among them poets from the West Coast, women, and African-Americans. Like the novelist John Steinbeck, Robinson Jeffers lived in California and wrote of the Spanish rancheros and Indians and their mixed traditions, and of the haunting beauty of the land. Trained in the classics and well-read in Freud, he re-created themes of Greek tragedy set in the rugged coastal seascape. He is best known for his tragic narratives such as Tamar Roan Stallion The Tower Beyond Tragedy (1924) a re-creation of Aeschylus's Agamemnon - - and Medea (1946), a re-creation of the tragedy by Euripides. American poet, known for his individualism and admiration for the hero. Today young people simply do not read [Jeffers]. Few young poets of my acquaintance have ever opened one of his books, and know only the anthology pieces which. I am afraid, they dislike…. In my opinion [Jeffers'] verse is shoddy and pretentious and the philosophizing is nothing but posturing. I say this with distaste. I do not like to put down a colleague and a fellow Californian. Many friends of mine of my own or a slightly older generation, leading poets and critics of poetry, still like Jeffers. Some even think he is great. I simply cannot see it. His reworkings of the plots of Greek tragedy make me shudder at their vulgarity, the coarsening of sensibility, the cheapening of the language and the tawdriness of the paltry insight into the great ancient meanings. His lyrics and reveries of the California landscape seem to me to suffer in... [The entire page is 4762 words long]

To know that great civilizations have broken down into violence, and their tyrants come, many times before. When open violence appears, to avoid it with honor or choose the least ugly faction; these evils are essential. To keep one's own integrity, be merciful and uncorrupted and not wish for evil; and not be duped By dreams of universal justice or happiness. These dreams will not be fulfilled. To know this, and know that however ugly the parts appear the whole remains beautiful. A severed hand Is an ugly thing and man dissevered from the earth and stars and his history... for contemplation or in fact... Often appears atrociously ugly. Integrity is wholeness, the greatest beauty is Organic wholeness, the wholeness of life and things

Robinson Jeffers (1887-1962) was an American poet who built a stone house and tower along the Pacific coast at Carmel Point during the first half of the 20th century. Between 1924 and 1963 he published 16 major books of poetry including Roan Stallion, Tamar, and other Poems, Cawdor and Other Poems, Give Your Heart To The Hawks, Thursos Landing, The Double Axe, and Hungerfield and Other Poems. When Roan Stallion and Tamar were first published critics placed Jeffers verse not with the likes of his modernist contemporaries such as T.S. Eliot, but with Homer and Shakespeare. Raised by a minister in Europe and America, he was fluent in Greek, Latin, German and French, and adapted Euripides Medea for Judith Anderson who played the title role to critical acclaim on Broadway in the late 1940's. Jeffers is well-known for his long near-free verse tragic narratives such as Cawdor as well as numerous short political poems including The Purse Seine and Shine Perishing Republic. Throughout his work he developed and reiterated his philosophy of inhumanism - the notion that humans have become detached from the natural cycles of nature through the urbanization and mechanization of western culture, that such detachment may be inherent in our species and naturally leads to cultural decay, and that the only way to seek redemption is to look beyond the violence and decay of human culture toward nature.

    California Poet, Robinson Jeffers
The Carmel area holds a very special place in my memory. As a kid, I'd spend summers not far from there, and remember the rugged beauty much of which is still there, however, there are far more homes now. I always wanted to return to live there, but things haven't worked out that way. Alas, let me get my book done, and work my way up the coast.
I've been reading a lot of California literature as of late. One person I've stumbled upon is Robinson Jeffers (1887 - 1962), who lived in Carmel in the first half of the 20th century. What has crept over me the past decade or so, is the fact that when I was young, the educational Eurocentrism and East Coast dominance pervaded our curriculum to the point where we didn't cover many western writers or artists.
Back then, few but serious writers and Californians knew about Steinbeck. With poetry, we were rightfully taken through Dickinson and Frost even Burns, but weren't introduced to one of the most gifted and important American poets of the 20th century, Robinson Jeffers. Most likely it was his anti-war views that kept him out of the curriculum, that, and Jeffers's poems, such as Cawdor are nothing less than epic. Not easy fare for a young reader, though his description is more easily imagined by anyone growing up along the northern coast than the snow covered forests from east coast poets.
He was an anti-modernist, a bit of an isolationist more so during WWII, when his antiwar feelings made him unpopular. He loved his surroundings the rugged cliffs of Carmel, where he started building his stone house from granite, situated on the tors in 1918.

Books by Robinson Jeffers Shop used books at Biblio.com American poet and playwright, whose works combined themes from ancient tragedies, Old Testament, and the legend of Christ with dark views and absurdities of modern life. Jeffers called for poetry of 'dangerous images', which would 'reclaim substance and sense, and psychological reality.' He believed that 'poetry is bound to concern itself chiefly with permanent aspects of life.' "I have seen these ways of God: I know of no reason For fire and change and torture and the old returnings." In 1913 he married a divorcee, Una Call Kuster, and in 1914 moved to Carmel, on the Monterey cost of California. He built there a stone house and an observation tower, withdrawing into its shelter to the contemplation of the landscape of sea and mountains and to depict the costal scenery in narrative poems. Jeffers's breakthrough collection was TAMAR AND OTHER POEMS, which appeared in 1924. It was praised by T.S. Eliot and established his reputation. The narrative title poem draws loosely on the biblical story of King David's daughter, and exhibited Jeffers's preoccupation with the themes of lust, incest and man's destructive self-obsession.
