The third international anthology. A stunning, lavish, damn huge production, with essays, art, poetry and invective from just about anyone who's anyone. Paper Abstract:
Paper Introduction:
Antonin Artaud's theater of cruelty techniques are springboards for the director's imagination. His theories, based in part on Cambodian and Balinese dance, extol a form of "total theater," where visual images, gesture, light, sound, and noise take precedence over the written or spoken word. This potent combination is used to disturb the subconscious of the audience and kindle their imaginations. These images are often shocking, but as Artaud explains, "We are not free, and the sky can still fall on our heads; and the theater exists to remind us of this fact" (Artaud 79). Alfred Jarry's King Ubu displays "the spirit of profound anarchy which is the root of all poetry" (Artaud 42), and this can be seen in Act IV of the play as Pa Ubu states, We'll stay on top of this hill and we'll not be so Text of the Paper: The entire text of the paper is shown below. However, the text is somewhat scrambled. We want to give you as much information as we possibly can about our papers and essays, but we cannot give them away for free. In the text below you will find that while disordered, many of the phrases are essentially intact. From this text you will be able to get a solid sense of the writing style, the concepts addressed, and the sources used in the research paper.

About the Exhibition Ubu's Almanac: Alfred Jarry and the Graphic Arts is an exhibition on view at the Spencer Museum of Art, Univeristy of Kansas, from April 11 - May 31, 1998. The exhibition includes prints and books by or edited by the French playwright, Alfred Jarry. Today Jarry is remembered almost exclusively as an author, especially of his notorious play, Ubu Roi. However, as this exhibition seeks to demonstrate, Jarry was also very involved in the world of printed images. He made woodcuts and drawings to ornament his own books, and he was involved with two periodicals ( L'Ymagier and Perhinderion ) that sought to assemble a broad spectrum of printed art, much of it of anonymous or popular production and generally of a devotional nature. These periodicals also included, however, images by the important German Renaissance artist, Albrecht Dürer, and many of Jarry's contemporaries, such as Henri Rousseau and Pierre Bonnard.

http://users.rcn.com/obo/ubu/ubu_FAQ.html
UBU FAQ Version 1.0.2
1. Why don't you provide downloadable sound samples of your recorded work?
2. Why are there no band photos on the albums?
Band photos are a necessary evil for press use but have no business being in close proximity to art. Band photos smack of personality cult. Also, Mik Mellen, who was the Ubu photographer for years, didn't have much interest in taking pictures of people.
3. Why were there no printed lyrics?
From the beginning we never printed lyrics. We printed very little information. We didn't even list who played what. Words can't be separated from the music. Rock music is not poetry bolted onto quaint populist naive musical structures. But in the 80's the cd came along and there were those booklets to fill up. We went along with the crowd. We were weak-willed. Simultaneously, we began to think, "Oh that Tom Verlaine gets credit for writing good lyrics... that David Byrne does... We oughta get credit too!" We were weak. We wised up.
4. Why did "Final Solution" disappear for years?
Because of the title. A Sherlock Holmes story called "The Final Problem" was the inspiration for the song. If there's a final problem there's got to be a final solution. Didn't think about it very much until the punk movement came along with its nazi tokenism. The band decided to drop the song rather than risk association.
