Brief biography of alfred Jarrythe first playwright of the absurd.
http://www.imagi-nation.com/moonstruck/clsc2.htm
Alfred Jarry Alfred Jarry, known primarily for his Ubu plays, began writing in 1888 at the age of fifteen with two fellow pupils at the Rennes lycee . Their project, a comic satire of their physics teacher, Monsieur Hebert, was nothing more than a childish prank. Eventually, however, this "piece alquemique" would become the world's first absurdist drama. The first and most famous of Alfred Jarry's Ubu plays is Ubu Roi or Ubu Rex . This strange parody of Shakespeare's Macbeth let loose upon the world the grotesque figure of Pa Ubu, a foul old man set on conquering Poland by any means necessaryand a personification of all that is base and stupid in mankind. The play premiered at the Theatre de L'OEuvre on December 10, 1896 to mixed results from an angry and violent crowd. Some audience members were outraged. Others were intrigued. But no one had ever seen anything like this before. The next day, the debate raged on in the papers and the cafes. In 1898

"Ubi roi" was his first play, published in 1896. He also wrote a surrealistic novel: "The Supermale" (1902). Alfred Jarry Quotes Alfred Jarry (1873-1907) is known for "Ubu Roi" (1896), a parody of "Macbeth." Jarry was a French writer, who is considered a father of the Theatre of the Absurd. hardly an original piece of writing" (Lennon, 26). In Jarry's hands "the play became decidedly more bizarre" (lennon, 26). He expanded the work and more clearly defined the nature of Heb's character, adding such things as the concentric circles on his belly that represented "simultaneous states of emptiness and greed" (Lennon, 26). What was evolving was a character that embodied everything that Jarry was growing to hate hardly enough to cover the expense (Beaumont, 95). The stage was set for King Ubu. Jarry consumed himself with preparations for the show. "The final production of Ubu Roi, was thus far more the work of Jarry himself than anyone else" (Beaumont, 97). Jarry made himself a general annoyance to Lugné-Poe. He would note in his memoirs that Jarry was "as stubborn as a Breton mule" (Beaumont, 94). Jarry insisted on certain conventions of speech, action and setting. The staccato manner of speaking, the misplaced accents, the puppet-like movement, the use of masks, the use of placards, the hodge-podge style of scenic painting all of these were Jarry's ideas (Beaumont, 97-99). In fact, a lot of the construction was done by Jarry himself. It seemed as if Jarry could not separate himself from Ubu. And the show went on, despite its author.

Jarry, Alfred (1873-1907) A precursor of surrealism and credited with having invented the Theater of the Absurd, Alfred-Henry Jarry included homosexual characters and themes in most of his works. Jarry was born in Laval (Brittany) on September 8, 1873. His mother, an eccentric, headstrong woman who strongly influenced her son, left her husband when Jarry was six, taking her children with her and moving first to Saint-Brieuc (1879) and then to Rennes (1888). Images and material from Jarry's Breton childhood would later appear throughout his work. Sponsor Message.

French playwright, novelist, essayist, and poet. The following entry provides criticism on Jarry's works from 1984 through 2001. For criticism prior to 1984, see TCLC, Volumes 2 and 14.
    INTRODUCTION
A contemporary of the Symbolists and post-Impressionists, Jarry wrote plays, novels, and essays that anticipated the Theater of the Absurd, Dadaism, Surrealism and Futurism. His 1896 play, Ubu Roi King Ubu ), is credited with subverting the basic dramaturgical conventions of mimesis and with creating a new literary type, a buffoonish yet sinister anti-protagonist who possesses no redeeming qualities. Jarry also developed the aesthetic philosophy of 'pataphysics, a logic of the absurd that holds that reality consists of a series of accidents and exceptions, and that therefore we can draw no firm conclusions, which is the basis of absurdist aesthetics espoused by the Theater of the Absurd. Generally recognized as a driving force in Surrealism, Jarry's work, particularly King Ubu and Gestes et Opinions du Docteur Faustroll, Pataphysicien

Jarry, Alfred key , French author. He was well known in Paris for his eccentric and dissolute behavior and for his insistence on the superiority of hallucinations over rational intelligence. His most famous work is the satirical farce Ubu Roi [Ubu the king] (1896, tr. 1961), with a repulsive and cowardly hero based on one of his old schoolteachers. He also wrote surrealistic verse stories, which, although witty, are also blasphemous and scatological. They include

by Jim McGurn Bound by rods to their machines, the crew of a five man bicycle hurtle across Europe and Asia in a grotesquely dehumanised race against an express train. The riders, who are paced by jet cars and flying machines, reach speeds of 300 kilometres an hour thanks to their diet of Perpetual Motion Food, a volatile mixture of alcohol and strychnine. One of the riders dies in the saddle, an event hardly noticed in the farcical pandemonium of technology in which the race ends after ten thousand miles. The race is a key episode in 'The Supermale', a French novel written in Paris in 1902, which speculates on how our minds and bodies may be overwhelmed by technology. The author, Alfred Jarry, was fascinated by bicycles, and they often appeared in his barbed and often shocking writings. He was also notorious for his wild eccentricity and his outrageously unconventional cycling. First, the scene needs to be set, since neither Jarry the writer nor Jarry the cycling subversive make much sense away from their context.
In the thirty year period before the First World War, Paris seemed to have lost (or found) itself in an extravaganza of public display, frivolity and self-indulgence. They were heady days, at least for the many leisured property owners of Paris. Whether in a theatre box or on a bicycle it was important to be seen, to perform and to sparkle. Society life revolved around cafe talk, banquets, cabaret, duels, circuses and new technological marvels, such as the cinematograph, the electric bulb and the new chain-driven safety bicycle. Jarry himself revelled in this new technology. For instance his 'How to build a Time Machine' contains plausible technical details which slip, almost unnoticeably, into pure fantasy.

Jarry's novels are equally outrageous, and the best of them are now again available in English. Where Exploits and Opinions of Dr. Faustroll, Pataphysician is philosophical, The Supermale is carnal. André Marcueil, gentleman and scientist, has the ability to make love an infinite number of times in succession. Like a mock Jules Verne, Jarry describes the manner in which this Supermale proves his claim; after 82 times with a woman, attending doctors finally hook him up to a machine instead, with whom he merges in the book's and the Supermale's final climax. Barbara Wright's excellent translation, first published by New Directions, has been long out of print." Previous Page Index of Artists Next Page

Format: Trade Paperback Published: October 25, 1993 ISBN:
    From the Publisher
A re-issue of three plays that ushered in the great age of absurdist theatre There was a riot at the first performance of Ubu Roi on 10 December 1896, when Firmin Gemier, playing Ubu, strode to the footlights and roared: Merde! at the audience, and theatre would never be the same again. Ubu became a force to be reckoned with in literature, art and politics. Jarry wrote more exploits for him and took to acting the role of Ubu himself in his own brief, strange life. This volume contains lively modern translations by Cyril Connolly and Simon Watson Taylor of Ubu Roi, Ubu Cocu and Ubu Enchaine as well as Jarry’s writings on theatre. The Ubu explosion sent shrapnel flying into the next century. Dada, Surrealism, Pataphysics, Theatre of Cruelty, the Absurd - all owe a debt to Jarry. (Charles Marowitz, Encore)
