Randall Jarrell was born on May 6, 1914 in Nashville, Tennessee, to Owen and Anna Campbell Jarrell. A single sister, died in infancy before Randall Jarrell's birth. Brother Charles was born in 1915 after the family had moved to California. His father worked as assistant to a children's photographer in Los Angeles but soon opened his own studio.
Poor economic conditions forced the family to move to Long Beach, California. His mother had a "delicate constitution" to which Jarrell refers in the poem Hope . Relations between his parents became strained. His maternal uncle Howell Campbell, moved his mother and the children back to Nashville, Tennessee, and his parents divorced. His mother took a job as an English teacher at a secretarial school in Nashville. Randall Jarrell worked as a paper boy and sold Christmas wrappings door-to-door during this period. He did well in school and developed a love of libraries at the Carnegie Library in Nashville.

Randall Jarrell (1914 - 1965)
Randall Jarrell (1914 - 1965) was a United States author, writer and poet. He was a native of Nashville, Tennessee and graduated from Vanderbilt University. While at Vanderbilt, he was closely acquainted with the group of poets which made up the Fugitives group, but his work is not considered to have been greatly influenced by them. Jarrell followed the great critic John Crowe Ransom from Vanderbilt to Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, where Jarrell wrote a masters thesis on the poetry of Alfred Edward Housman and roomed with student poet Robert Lowell. Jarrell was a well-respected academic and literary critic in addition to his creative work. He taught at Kenyon College, the University of Texas, Sarah Lawrence College, and the University of North Carolina" University of North Carolina. His first collection of poetry, Blood from a Stranger , was published in 1942, the same year he enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps. He failed to qualify to fly, however, and instead worked for the Army as a control tower operator. His second and third books

'Death of a Ball Turret Gunner', the poem most familiar to readers of anthologies, is couched in considerable explanation. Given the compression of the poem itself (five lines long), Jarrell's commentary dwarfs it. Likewise, his grounding for 'Eighth Air Force' is extensive. In both cases, the background is welcome. Most readers would not have known, for instance, that the ball turret gunner on an American bomber was often positioned like a fetus in the womb or that at high altitude blood would instantly freeze to the fur-lined jacket. These facts are necessary for complete comprehension of the poem: From my mother's sleep I fell into the State,
And I hunched in its belly till my wet fur froze.
Six miles from earth, loosed from its dream of life,
I woke to the black flak and the nightmare fighters.
When I died they washed me out of the turret with a hose. He doesn't give too much away, though. The Pilate/pilot dichotomy of 'Eighth Air Force' is alluded to simply by way of crediting the Gospels for many of the lines in the second two stanzas of that poem. How young I seem; I

"In the bad type of thin pamphlets, in hand-set lines on imported paper, people's hard lives and hopeless ambitions have expressed themselves more directly and heartbreakingly than they have ever expressed in any work of art: it is as if the writers had sent you their ripped-out arms and legs, with 'This is a poem' scrawled on them in lipstick."

When I was in Vietnam we called the AC-130, or an earlier version, "Puff the Magic Dragon" because it magically appeared at night when the enemy attacked, shooting out steady streams of flame, vanquishing our enemies.
Randall Jarrell understood the tragic attempts of children to make sense of a war that makes no sense.
The child saw the bombers skate like stones across the fields
As he trudged down the ways the summer strewed
With its reluctant foliage; how many giants
Rose and peered down and vanished, by the road
The ants had littered with their crumbs and dead.
"That man is white and red like my clown doll," He says to his mother, who has gone away. "I didn’t cry, I didn’t cry." In the sky the planes are angry like the wind. The people are punishing the people-why? He answers easily, his foolish eyes

Echoes Main Biography Sample Poetry Inspired Poems ... Bibliography Randall Jarrell: The Great World War Two Poet By: Diana Woodall Randall Jarrell is best known for his World War II poetry in which he depicts the extreme fears and struggles of the soldiers who fought and died. Poet Robert Fitzgerald describes him as "practically the only American poet able to cope with the Second Great War." (The Norton Anthology of Modern Poetry. Page 900). Initially inspired by Professor John Crowe Ransom, Jarrell’s early poems describe the struggles of growing up, political situations, and death. Later in his life, Jarrell takes on the role of deceased soldiers trying to understand life, and writes about "stark subjects in intentionally bitter tones" (American Cultural Leaders. www.bigchalk.com). Jarrell was born in Nashville Tennessee in 1914. In 1915, his family moved to the west coast, and he spent most of his childhood in Long Beach, and Hollywood, California. When Jarrell was only 11 years old, his parents divorced and he was sent to live with his grandparents. In high school, Jarrell took business courses, but he soon came under the influence of John Ransom and realized that he wanted to write poetry instead. Jarrell attended Vanderbilt University and received a bachelor’s and master’s degree. He then went to teach English at Kenyon Collage. In 1939, Jarrell accepted a new teaching position at the University of Texas at Austin, where he met his first wife, Mackie Langham. Jarrell’s early poems began to appear in many newspapers and magazines such as The American Review, The Southern View, and the Kenyon Review.

  • It is better to entertain an idea than to take it home to live with you for the rest of your life. One of the most obvious facts about grown-ups to a child is that they have forgotten what it is like to be a child. I see at last that all the knowledge
I wrung from the darkness that darkness flung me
Is worthless as ignorance: nothing comes from nothing
    The darkness from the darkness.
    Pain comes from the darkness
And we call it wisdom. It is pain. A good poet is someone who manages, in a lifetime of standing out in thunderstorms, to be struck by lightning five or six times. It is better to entertain an idea than to take it home to live with you for the rest of your life. The climate of our culture is changing. Under these new rains, new suns, small things grow great, and what was great grows small; whole species disappear and are replaced I think that one possible definition of our modern culture is that it is one in which nine-tenths of our intellectuals can't read any poetry.
