No More Mrs. Jellyby Main My Sister's Keeper Children of Men by P. D. James I'm not much of a sci-fi reader, and I'm especially not a huge consumer of dystopian fiction. I'm far too optimistic to submit myself to the fatalistic outlook of dystopia. So I'm not overly familiar or comfortable with the conventions of the genre, outside of what I learned from Margaret Atwood, but as soon as I read the premise of this book, I knew I had to read it. It's set in the year 2021, and is told in the alternating first and third person perspective of Theo Fallon, an Oxford professor and historian. The future in which he lives is not so different from the world of 2007, nor the world of 1992 (when the book was written) insomuch as there are no flying cars, no outposts of civilization on the moon, not even any mention of computers that I can recall. But it is the world of a doomed society, because it has been more than 25 years since a baby has been born. In the year 1995, all of humanity has been struck, completely inexplicably, infertile. The book opens many years past the panicked shock of the initial realization. Theo notes in his diary, "We are outraged and demoralized less by the impending end of our species, less even by our inability to prevent it, then by our failure to discover the cause." Their spirits have been defeated not by the 'what', but by the unanswerable 'why?'

      • UK Wednesday, 14 March 2001 The author P D (Phyllis Dorothy) James was born in Oxford in 1920. When she was 11, her family moved to Cambridge, where she was educated at the Cambridge High School for Girls. In 1941, she married a physician, with whom she had two daughters. After serving in India during the Second World War, he returned home mentally ill and died in 1964. With two children to support, James went to work first as an administrator in the NHS and then, in 1968, in the forensic department at the Home Office. She began writing the first of her 17 novels in 1962 and has since become one of the great crime writers, introducing two of the most celebrated detectives of modern times: the private investigator Cordelia Gray and the police commander Adam Dalgliesh. In 1991 she was awarded a life peerage and, as Baroness James of Holland Park, she now sits in the House of Lords.

The Murder Room

Faber
UK Hardcover First Edition
ISBN 0-571-21821-0
Publication Date: September, 2003
Date Reviewed: 10-01-05
s REFERENCES COLUMNS Mystery General Fiction 'The Murder Room' follows the classic 'whodunnit' plot. It offers multiple bodies, a cast of suitably dubious characters and, for P. D. James fans, the familiar Commander Dalgleish and team. It is also a novel rich in descriptive detail, but for all this, it remains vaguely unsatisfying. Insufficiently distinct from other novels of this genre, 'The Murder Room' is an easy-going, but unprepossessing read. 'The Murder Room' is a classic detective novel following the traditional pattern. It offers multiple murders and a familiar detective. However, it lacks excitement and the mystery is not sufficiently planned to allow the reader to become a true part of the investigation. For all that, it is an enjoyable book and a good vehicle for James' talents as a descriptive prose writer.

ABOUT US SUBSCRIBE BACK ISSUES LINKS ... CONTACT US P.D. James Excerpt from the interview by Lynn Kaczmarek in the February/March 2006 issue of Mystery News It was a typical sunless January day in Chicago, early evening in the UK, when P.D. James and I chatted about life, death, and mystery. The Baroness James of Holland Park, a retired magistrate, member of the House of Lords, an 84-year-old great-grandmother of four, a winner of numerous awards, including the Cartier Diamond Dagger for lifetime achievement, Phyllis Dorothy James is perhaps the best living writer of the classic British mystery. In fact, for many of us, she has set the standard by which all others are judged an uneasy mantle born with great dignity. Writing came late to P.D. James (the name chosen not to conceal her sex, but because it would look better on a book jacket). Although she knew since early childhood that she wanted to become an author, it wasn't until her thirties that she put pen to paper and wrote her first book, Cover Her Face , under the most trying circumstances. Her husband, Connor White, to whom her newest book is dedicated, had come home from World War II with a mental condition so serious he was institutionalized and died several years after the publication of the first book. In order to support her two children she held various positions with the health department and a department of criminal law before becoming a magistrate and eventually retiring to write full time in 1979.

. . . detective novelist. P.D. James is globally admired as today's leading voice in the world's most popular form of fiction. The author of more than a dozen murder mysteries and three works of nonfiction, she was named Baroness of Holland Park in 1991 and sits in Great Britain's House of Lords. For thirty years, Lady James worked for the British Civil Service. She has 6 honorary doctorates of literature, was president of the Society of Authors, has served as a governor of the BBC, chaired the panel of judges for the prestigious Booker Prize and was a magistrate. Time To Be in Earnest is autobiographical. 3:29 secs
[This Program was recorded May 2, 2001 in Atlanta, Georgia, US.] P.D. James' detective novels go to the heart of elemental human mysteries a longing for justice, the human hunger for stories and a rational, moral, comprehensible world, the inevitability of death. Is this too much to ask from murder mysteries? Hardly! according to this one-time British civil servant, now a Life Peer. Lady James is drawn to the way the world's most popular form of literature affirms the sanctity of the individual life and allows her to bring order out of disorder. Millions of people, worldwide, agree. P.D. James' works of fiction have carried her into the House of Lords, onto the Board of Governors of the BBC, given her the standing to chair the judges of the prestigious Booker Prize and graced her with six honorary doctorates of literature from some of the world's great academic institutions.
