  • P. D. James 1920–
(Full name Phyllis Dorothy James White) English novelist, short story writer, nonfiction writer, essayist, and critic. The following entry presents an overview of James's life and career. For further information about her life and works, see CLC , Volumes 18 and 46.
    INTRODUCTION
James is a respected crime and mystery writer who is credited with expanding the scope of the mystery genre. Although she makes use of elements of traditional detective fiction, James is particularly concerned with establishing the psychological motivations of her characters. James is also noted for her sophisticated prose style, highlighted by literary allusions and quotations, and her vivid, realistic characters and settings.
    Biographical Information
James was born in Oxford, England, in 1920. Her father was an Inland Revenue officer, and the family of five did not have much money. James had the opportunity to attend Cambridge Girls High School, but she ended her education when she left the school at the age of 16. Two years after the start of World War II, James married Dr. Connor Bantry White, who served during the war in the Royal Army Medical Corps. Her husband returned from the war suffering from extreme mental illness for which he had to be hospitalized. In order to support her two young daughters and herself, James took night classes in hospital administration and became an administrator working for the National Health Service. Her experience in the health field helped in the writing of

Author P.D. James's 14 books written over the past 33 years have sold more than ten million in the United States alone. PBS featured several of her novels in its "Mystery!" series. Phyllis Dorothy James was born in Oxford, entered the civil service, and rose rapidly in the Home Office, eventually becoming principal in charge of the Criminal Policy Department. It was not until she was 40 that she began to write. After her retirement in 1979, she became a magistrate, chair of the Society of Authors, a governor of the BBC, and, in 1991, baroness. In this program, Ms. James relates how her experiences helped her to create the nasty murders and ingenious plots that are her trademark.

Venetia Aldridge QC is a distinguished criminal lawyer. When she secures the acquittal of a young man, Garry Ashe, from the charge of murdering his aunt, a series of bizarre events is set in train, starting with her own murder. Adam Dalgliesh, the poet Scotland Yard commander, uncovers the reason for Venetia's death, and its connection with the subsequent murder of her office cleaner. The secrets, locked in the past, which gave rise to these violent events have all come to light when, in a startling climax in the East Anglia marshlands, Garry Ashe is cornered by the police and shot dead.

I was just thinking about what I thought of this book, and of PD James in general, and before writing it down I thought I'd have a quick look at what I said last time I read one of her books. That was nearly four years ago but, somewhat unsurprisingly, I was thinking practically exactly the same things this time, it's hardly worth writing it out again! Nice setting for this one though, also unsurprising given the title! Borrowed. 8 copies of this book are available on BookMooch

    Her detective novels include:
Cover Her Face (1962) (introducing her Scotland Yard detective Adam Dalgliesh)
    A Mind to Murder (1963)
An Unsuitable Job for a Woman (1972) (introducing her female sleuth called Cordelia Gray)

P.D. James has also written a successful mainstream novel entitled Innocent Blood (1980) and the dystopian novel The Children of Men (1992).
Many of P.D. James' mystery novels take place against the backdrop of Britain's vast bureaucracies such as the criminal justice system and the health services, arenas in which James honed her skills for decades starting in the 1940s when she went to work in hospital administration to help support her ailing husband and two children. Two years after the publication of Cover Her Face, James' husband died and she took a position as a civil servant within the criminal section of the Department of Home Affairs. James worked for government service until her retirement in 1979, and her many years of experience within these bureaucracies add a complex stratum of insider's knowledge to her writing. Her latest work, Death in Holy Orders, displays an insightful grasp of the inner workings of church hierarchy.
It has been noted by many critics that James has upgraded and expanded the entire genre of mystery writing; and that many of her books, especially the police procedurals starring Dalgliesh, the poetry writing detective, fit the mainstream novel criteria as much as they do the detective genre. James' strengths are characterization and her ability to construct atmosphere and stories rich in detail.

A closer look at the life of gifted storyteller, P. D. James, author of the Adam Dalgliesh series.
Author of nineteen books, most of P. D. James' work features investigator Adam Dalgliesh, Commander in the Metropolitan Police Service at New Scotland Yard, who also writes poetry. Written in the tradition of the British crime story, this series has won numerous awards, and many of these books have been made into television miniseries. Let's take a closer look at the author who brought us detective (and poet) Dalgliesh.
    Early Life
Phyllis Dorothy James was born in Oxford, England, on August 3, 1920. Her family moved to Cambridge when she was 11, where she attended the Cambridge High School for Girls. She left school when she was sixteen to work because her family needed the money. For three years, she worked in a tax office, and she later worked at the Festival Theatre in Cambridge as assistant stage manager and assistant box office manager, among other miscellaneous roles. She married army doctor Ernest Connor Bantry White in 1941 and had two daughters (Claire and Jane). When her husband returned from World War II, he suffered from mental illness leaving him unable to get a job. This forced James to support the family working for the National Health Service between 1949-68. In 1964, her husband White died.

The Maul and the Pear Tree:
    The Ratcliffe Highway Murders 1811
    P.D. James + T.A. Critchley
Sphere Books 1987 A book review by Danny Yee In the early hours of Sunday December 8th, 1811, four people in the East End of London, near the Ratcliffe Highway, were brutally murdered; twelve days later a nearby household of three met the same fate. Until Jack the Ripper almost eighty years on, this was to be the most prominent murder case of nineteenth century London, taken up by the national newspapers and raised in Parliament. In The Maul and the Pear Tree detective novelist P.D. James and police historian T.A. Critchley revisit these murders, describing the discoveries of the crimes, the public response and the frantic but ineffectual hue and cry, and the death in prison of suspect John Williams, who was then buried at a crossroads with a stake through his heart. In a final chapter they reinterpret the evidence, attempting both to clear Williams ("virtually condemned and his memory vilified on evidence so inadequate, circumstantial and irrelevant that no competent court of law would commit him for trial") and to uncover the real authors of the murders (and possibly of Williams' death as well). 19 August 2000
