James did not begin writing until she reached her thirties. Her first novel, Cover Her Face , featuring the investigator/poet Adam Dalgliesh of New Scotland Yard , was published in 1962. She has said that her influences include Jane Austen Dorothy L. Sayers (herself a well-known British author of mysteries), Graham Greene and Evelyn Waugh Many of James's mystery novels take place against the backdrop of the UK's vast bureaucracies such as the criminal justice system and the health services, arenas in which James honed her skills for decades starting in the 1940s when she went to work in hospital administration to help support her ailing husband and two children. Two years after the publication of Cover Her Face , James's husband died and she took a position as a civil servant within the criminal section of the Department of Home Affairs. James worked in government service until her retirement in 1979, and her many years of experience within these bureaucracies add a complex stratum of insider's knowledge to her writing. J A M E S T H E Art O F murder BY JENNIFER REESE T here is an almost alarming disjunction between the warm, grandmotherly presence of P.D. James and the chilling, elegant and very smart detective novels for which she is famous. At 77, James peers amiably through thick glasses and uses the word "dear" in just about every sentence. But she also writes razor-sharp observations of British society and coolly graphic depictions of dead bodies. Her murders are hideously baroque: In "Shroud for a Nightingale," a nurse, volunteering for a demonstration of intravenous feeding, is administered bathroom disinfectant instead of milk and dies writhing in front of a classroom. In "Devices and Desires," the killer whistles hymns while strangling his victims, then stuffs their mouths with pubic hair. And in James' most recent opus, "A Certain Justice,"

Friday 09:00-09:45 Desert Island Discs is one of Radio 4's most popular and enduring programmes. Created by Roy Plomley in 1942, the format is simple: each week a guest is invited by Sue Lawley to choose the eight records they would take with them to a desert island. LISTEN AGAIN Not available PRESENTER SUE LAWLEY Sue's biography Sue's interview Quiz about Sue  "Lawley's consensual, almost sensual probing, producing an ambiguous bond like that between hostage and hostage-taker, is ... a masterpiece of technique." The Sunday Times 17 March 1996 PROGRAMME DETAILS Sunday 27 October Repeated Friday 1 November P D James P D James was born in Oxford, later moving to Ludlow on the Welsh Borders where she experienced a childhood which she says had more in common with a Victorian childhood than anything today. She was a well-behaved, quiet child who entertained herself and her siblings by telling and writing stories. Phyllis attended an old-fashioned grammar school where she enjoyed English lessons. She says "I knew I was going to write books".

Sara Krulwich/The New York Times P. D. James REVIEWS OF P. D. JAMES'S EARLIER BOOKS:
  • Cover Her Face
"This is a literate and not unpromising first novel, but modeled firmly upon the detective story of 30 years ago at its dullest. . . . When I keep urging a return to the formal detective story, this is not what I mean."
  • Natural Causes
"Fine, firm plotting, well-drawn characters, nice observation of Dalgliesh's own emotions . . ."
  • Shroud for a Nightingale
"James works in the old tradition. She takes all the time in the world to establish her plot, her people and her locale. False clues are liberally seeded. The author goes into the background of the characters. Some are literate in the best British tradition."
  • An Unsuitable Job for a Woman
"The people in these pages are anything but stereotypes; the author's approach is sensitive and mature; and the writing just purrs along, keeping your attention all the way. . . . [I]f, at the very end, things are a little too pat, the James magic is such that we are willing to go along."
  • The Black Tower
"James is an exceedingly good writer, and her detective, Adam Dalgliesh, is one of the more unusual ones in action today. Nevertheless, 'The Black Tower' is so slow-moving that it will try the patience of most readers and that has to be the besetting sin of a crime novel."

    Date : January 4, 2005.
Crime Scene : Silver City movie complex, Burnaby, BC.
Facts : A young man was attacked and knifed by strangers in the lobby of the theatre after a movie with the end result that he lay in hospital in serious condition with six stab wounds. It seems he had complained to management during the movie that a group of viewers were making a nuisance of themselves. ( National Post , Jan. 4, 05)
    Witness : P.D. James
P.D. James, the British murder mystery writer, would have some scathing social commentary on this event if she were to come across the article while drinking her morning cup of tea. Perhaps the reigning Queen of Crime, Lady James is also viewed as a serious Christian novelist by the literary critic, Ralph C. Wood. Over the holiday I went on a P.D. James binge reading three of her more recent novels plus her autobiography. Through her characters, I was struck (but still alive) by how James portrays the disengagement of British culture from its Christian heritage. She is a writer who bears witness to this descent into “barbarity.” In Death In Holy Orders (2001), the confessed murderer writes to Adam Dalgleish, the detective hero of the James novels:

Together with Ruth Rendell, P.D. James is one of the most famous British mystery writers. Born in 1920, she worked in the North West Regional Hospital Board in London from 1949 to 1968 and then as home office principal in the police department until 1972 when she moved to the criminal policy department. She retired in 1979. Her first novel, Cover her face published in 1962, featured Scotland Yard man Adam Dalgliesh. However unlike most series, James seems to use her main character just for the needs of the story and not vice versa. She has also written two books starring PI Cordelia Gray but her most successful novel to date is her non-series book Innocent Blood . P. D. James has won many awards: Silver Dagger 1971 for Shroud for a Nightingale Silver Dagger 1975 for The Black Tower Silver Dagger 1986 and International Macavity Award for Best Novel in 1987 for A Taste for Death Diamond Dagger Grand Master Award 1999. In 1983 she was named Officer of the Order of the British Empire. PD James has also recently been nominated peer in the House of Lords taking the name of Baroness James of Holland Park. She is a widow and has two children.
