James Henry Salisbury (1823-1905) James Henry Salisbury was born in Scott, New York in 1823. He earned a Bachelor of Natural Sciences degree from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, in 1844. He then joined the New York Geological Survey as an assistant chemist, was promoted in 1849 to principle chemist, and remained in this position until 1852. During this time Salisbury earned his medical degree from Albany Medical College (1850), and he earned a Master's degree from Schenectady College (1852). Salisbury served as a physician during the Civil War, and became convinced that diarrhea suffered by the troops could be controlled with a diet of coffee and lean chopped beefsteak. Eventually he came to believe that most diseases were a result of an unhealthy diet, and spent the rest of his life developing this meat patty which came to be known as Salisbury Steak. My Dad, James H. “Hank” Cowan, who often referred to himself as a good ole’ boy from Arkansas, his birth place and a state he dearly loved, was one of the 511 POW’s rescued by Lt. Col. Henry Mucci’s 6th Rangers, the biggest and best military rescue mission EVER. Combat photographers went along to film the rescue of the Ghosts of Bataan. Inside you will read of Hank’s survival of the of the Bataan Death March, The Japanese Holocaust, and three years of unmitigated hell on earth as a Japanese POW. I thank God every day for those men who risked their lives to save my Dad and all the other brave survivors of that hell hole known as Cabanatuan; consigned there by the politicians in Washington, D.C. and abandoned because of political reasons. was born in New York City into a wealthy family. His father, Henry James Sr., was one of the best-known intellectuals in mid-nineteenth-century America, whose friends included Thoreau, Emerson and Hawthorne. James made little money from his novels. Once his friend, the writer Edith Wharton, secretly arranged him a royal advance of $8,000 for THE IVORY TOWER (1917), but the money actually came from Wharton's royalty account with the publisher. When Wharton sent him a letter bemoaning her unhappy marriage, James replied: "Keep making the movements of life." In his youth James traveled back and forth between Europe and America. He studied with tutors in Geneva, London, Paris, Bologna and Bonn At the age of nineteen he briefly attended Harvard Law School, but was more interested in literature than studying law. James published his first short story, 'A Tragedy of Errors' two years later, and then devoted himself to literature. In 1866-69 and 1871-72 he was contributor to the Nation and Atlantic Monthly rom an early age James had read the classics of English, American, French and German literature, and Russian classics in translation. His first novel, WATCH AND WARD (1871), appeared first serially in the Atlantic. James wrote it while he was traveling through Venice and Paris.

"The 'Mudsill' Theory," by James Henry Hammond
Speech to the U.S. Senate, March 4, 1858 In all social systems there must be a class to do the menial duties, to perform the drudgery of life. That is, a class requiring but a low order of intellect and but little skill. Its requisites are vigor, docility, fidelity. Such a class you must have, or you would not have that other class which leads progress, civilization, and refinement. It constitutes the very mud-sill of society and of political government; and you might as well attempt to build a house in the air, as to build either the one or the other, except on this mud-sill. Fortunately for the South, she found a race adapted to that purpose to her hand. A race inferior to her own, but eminently qualified in temper, in vigor, in docility, in capacity to stand the climate, to answer all her purposes. We use them for our purpose, and call them slaves. We found them slaves by the common "consent of mankind," which, according to Cicero, "lex naturae est."

Breasted Archaeologist born: August 27, 1865 Rockford, Illinois died: December 2,1935 New York, New York A brilliant scholar of Egyptology, James Henry Breasted held the first chair of Egyptology in the United States. He was professor of Egyptology and Oriental History at the University of Chicago from 1894 to 1925 and founded the Oriental Institute Museum in 1919. The second child of Charles and Harriet Newell Garrison, Breasted spent his early childhood in Rockford, Illinois. In 1873 his parents bought a seven- acre tract in Downers Grove and built a small house. He entered North- Western (now North Central) College in Naperville at the age of fifteen and then served an apprenticeship in a pharmacy owned by his brother- in- law in Rochelle, Illinois. From 1882 to 1886 Breasted attended the Chicago College of Pharmacy. In 1886 his brother- in- law offered him a position as prescription clerk at his store in Omaha, Nebraska. Breasted accepted. Not satisfied by the pharmaceutical profession, he returned to Downers Grove the following year and decided to pursue another line of study. In 1888 Breasted enrolled at the Congregational Institute (now the Chicago Theological Seminary) to study Hebrew and the Scriptures under Dr. Samuel Ives Curtiss. Determined to master Hebrew, he also taught himself Greek, Latin, Babylonian and Assyrian cuneiform, ancient Egyptian, French, German, and a smattering of Italian. At this point, he realized that a life in the ministry was not for him, and he changed course again in order to devote his life to the study of Oriental history and languages.

James Henry Hammond, On the Admission of Kansas, Under the Lecompton Constitution ("Cotton is King")
Speech Before the United States Senate, 4 March 1858
[Excerpts] As I am disposed to see this question settled as soon as possible, and am perfectly willing to have a final and conclusive settlement now, after what the Senator from New York [William Seward] has said, I think it not improper that I should attempt to bring the North and South face to face, and see what resources each of us might have in the contingency of separate organizations. If we never acquire another foot of territory for the South, look at her. Eight hundred and fifty thousand square miles. As large as Great Britain, France, Austria, Prussia and Spain. Is not that territory enough to make an empire that shall rule the world? With the finest soil, the most delightful climate, whose staple productions none of those great countries can grow, we have three thousand miles of continental sea-shore line so indented with bays and crowded with islands, that, when their shore lines are added, we have twelve thousand miles. Through the heart of our country runs the great Mississippi, the father of waters, into whose bosom are poured thirty-six thousand miles of tributary rivers; and beyond we have the desert prairie wastes to protect us in our rear. Can you hem in such a territory as that? You talk of putting up a wall of fire around eight hundred and fifty thousand square miles so situated! How absurd.

Pub Date: Pages: 400 pages Dimensions: 6 x 9 in.
The first paperback edition of the monumental assemblage by the father of American Egyptology of all the historical “documents” of ancient Egypt: all the records of kings and queens, military conquests, diplomacy, etc. carved in stone or inscribed on papyrus or leather. Ancient Records of Egypt illuminates both the incredible complexity of Egyptian society and the almost insuperable difficulties of reconstructing a lost civilization. This first paperback edition of Ancient Records of Egypt features a new introduction and supplementary bibliographies by Peter A. Piccione. Setting Breasted's work in the context of the development of American Egyptology, Piccione discusses Breasted's establishment of the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago, with corporate support by John D. Rockefeller and other benefactors, and surveys the ambitious body of publications with which Breasted laid the foundation for future Egyptian studies. Links:

    An Angel in the House
    by James Henry Leigh Hunt
How sweet it were, if without feeble fright,
Or dying of the dreadful beauteous sight,
An angel came to us, and we could bear
To see him issue from the silent air
At evening in our room, and bend on ours
His divine eyes, and bring us from his bowers
News of dear friends, and children who have never
Been dead indeed,as we shall know forever. Alas! we think not what we daily see About our hearths, angels that are to be, Or may be if they will, and we prepare Their souls and ours to meet in happy air; A child, a friend, a wife whose soft heart sings In unison with ours, breeding its future wings.
