Henry James (1843-1916) American-born writer, gifted with talents in literature, psychology, and philosophy. James wrote 20 novels, 112 stories, 12 plays and a number of literary criticism. His models were Dickens, Balzac, and Hawthorne. James once said that he learned more of the craft of writing from Balzac "than from anyone else". "A novel is in its broadest sense a personal, a direct impression of life: that, to begin with, constitutes its value, which is greater or less according to the intensity of the impression." (from The Art of Fiction Henry James was born in New York City into a wealthy family. His father, Henry James Sr., was one of the best-known intellectuals in mid-nineteenth-century America, whose friends included Thoreau, Emerson and Hawthorne. James made little money from his novels. Once his friend, the writer Edith Wharton , secretly arranged him a royal advance of $8,000 for THE IVORY TOWER (1917), but the money actually came from Wharton's royalty account with the publisher. When Wharton sent him a letter bemoaning her unhappy marriage, James replied: "Keep making the movements of life."

He spent much of his life in England and became a British subject shortly before his death. He is primarily known for a series of major novels in which he portrayed the encounter of America with Europe. His plots centered on personal relationships, the proper exercise of power in such relationships, and other moral questions. His method of writing from the point of view of a character within a tale allowed him to explore the phenomena of consciousness and perception , and his style in later works has been compared to impressionist painting.

Which is annoying, because according to the instructions:
'Mist the surface of the peat to keep moist until tiny white 'pinheads' appear after about a week, then stop spraying water until the mushrooms are about the size of a pea. Once the mushrooms are about 3cm in diameter they are ready to harvest"
It's all going rather more slowly than anticipated, and although there are definite white specks of proto-mushroom visible, they seem to be outnumbered by a more ominous grey mould across the surface.
Although possibly the tub/tray/thing was too high up in the airing cupboard so I've moved it down a bit, closer to the radiator at the bottom. But not right at the bottom, as that's where the cat sleeps, and there's a very real concern she might view it as a new and interesting place to poo.

Biography of Henry James (1843-1916)
Henry James Henry James (1843-1916) was born on April 15, 1843, to Henry James, Sr., and his wife Mary Walsh Robertson. His older brother William was born in 1842, and younger siblings Garth Wilkinson, Robertson, and Alice were born in 1845, 1846, and 1848, respectively. Henry Sr., the son of an Irish immigrant, was one of thirteen children, born in Albany, New York. By the time his own children were born, he had inherited a great deal in wealth from his father, and the James family, at the time of Henry Jr.'s birth, lived in New York City, where Henry Sr. devoted his time to the study of theology, philosophy, and mysticism, rejecting his father's Presbyterian Churchto follow the teachings of Swedish Christian mystic Emanuel Swedenborg. The James children were educated in a variety of often unorthodox circumstances ? sometimes at schools, sometimes with private tutors, always with access to books and new experiences. Margaret Fuller, Washington Irving, William Makepeace Thackeray, and George Ripley visited to the James home during Henry Jr.'s boyhood. In 1855, the James family embarked on a three year-long trip to Geneva, London, and Paris ? an experience that influenced Henry Jr.'s decision, as an adult, to live and write in Europe rather than his native America. Upon their return from Europe, Henry Sr. moved the family to Cambridge, allowing for continued contact with prominent writers and thinkers, including nearby Concord's Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, and Bronson Alcott. Henry Jr. was a voracious reader and spent his teenage years divided between Cambridge, Europe, and Newport, Rhode Island, where he studied for a time with painter William Morris Hunt. His brother William was found to be a more adept artist, and Henry soon discontinued his lessons, turning instead to writing.

Humanity faces a crisis of law and conscience that few can recognize, still fewer will acknowledge, and none will remedy a crisis that jeopardizes the very future of human civilization. The essential concepts of human rights and human dignity are under assault as never before. Corruption and discrimination abound. Standards are slipping. The media wallow in denial and the people revel in insouciance. Compassion and decency are fast disappearing from the human behavioral repertoire. Victims of gross defamation and governmental cruelty become "non-persons" anathematized, ridiculed, rejected, suspected. Too often, the aggrieved enjoy no recourse, the persecuted find no refuge, the abused and degraded are denied all hope of escape or rescue. The system is broken not just the law enforcement system, but the advocacy system as well. Governments absurdly rationalize their own crimes and deny the equal protection of their laws. Advocates and non-governmental organizations corruptly abdicate their responsibility. In treachery or in trepidation, they discriminate against certain persons, refuse to acknowledge certain issues, and refuse to confront certain oppressors. They make exceptions. They make excuses. They consult an invisible rule book that tells them how far they may go, what and whom to ignore. To a great extent, Armageddon is within. It is a struggle for the liberty and integrity of the human mind, for the preservation of human dignity, for the very meaning of human existence, for the restoration of the Rule of Law, for the very continuance of civilization in any acceptable form.

Frances Hart and James Breasted were married in Germany shortly after he completed his doctoral work at the University of Berlin. The Breasteds explored the Nile on their honeymoon and returned together with their son in 1906. Frances endured frequent and lengthy separations from her husband and tolerated his intense preoccupation with his work Egyptology
Trained in Egyptian, Greek, Hebrew, and Arabic at Yale under William Rainey Harper, and in Berlin, Breasted's interest in ancient cultures drew him first to Egypt and then to Mesopotamia. Ancient Records of Egypt, published in 1906, was a five-volume work that contained his English translation of the most important Egyptian historical texts held in Europe at that time. In addition, he conducted a pioneering epigraphic survey in Egypt during two seasons, 1905-6 and 1906-7. With the help of a photographer and an assistant, he set about recording as much as he could of the tombs and temples along the banks of the Nile. This work is recognized today as crucial to the understanding of ancient Egyptian history and culture.
