Brian Jacques (pronounced Jakes ) was born in Liverpool England , growing up in the area of the Liverpool docks. He is known as Brian because both his father and one of his brothers are also called James. Jacques showed a knack for writing at an early age. At age ten, he was given an assignment of writing a story about animals, and he wrote about a bird that cleaned a crocodile's teeth. His teacher was very impressed with his knack of writing exceptionally well. When Brian told the other children that he had not copied the story, they didn't believe him, because they thought that no one could write that well when they were only 10 years old. He had always loved to write, but it was only then that he realized he had a talent for writing. He attended St. John's private school until the age of 15 when he left school (as was the tradition at the time) and set out to find adventure as a sea merchant

Brian Jacques BIO
Author Brian Jacques (pronounced "jakes") was born on June 15, 1939 in Liverpool, England. He grew up in Liverpool, attending St. John's School, and reading and writing adventure stories and tales about animals. In fact, when Jacques was 10, he turned in an animal story that his teacher thought was too good to have been written by a boy. Unfortunately, the teacher never believed that Jacques was really the author and he was punished for plagiarism (copying work that is not your own). Jacques finished his schooling at the age of 15 and began a series of jobs that included positions as: a longshoreman, a bus driver, a truck driver, a boxer, a postmaster, a stand-up comic, and a folk singer. Through all his different career paths, Jacques never stopped writing. He has written poetry, music, and stage plays. But the writing that really put him on the map, the book REDWALL , first started out as a story he crafted to entertain the children at the Royal Wavertree School for the Blind. He knew the children because one of his many jobs was delivering milk, and the school was on his route.

An English author from Liverpool, Brian Jacques is best known for his Redwall saga of fantasy books, as well as the Castaways of the Flying Dutchman series. He has also written two collections of short stories, The Ribbajack and Seven Strange and Ghostly Tales . As a youth, Jacques attended St. John's, an inner city Catholic school that had its playground on the roof. It was at this school where he was an altarboy. While enrolled there, an experience at the age of ten marked his potential as a writer. After being assigned to write a story about animals, Jacques wrote about a bird that cleaned the teeth of a crocodile. The teacher refused to believe that a boy his age could write as well as he did. When young Brian refused to falsely say that he had copied the story, he was caned for being "a liar". He had always loved to write, but it was only then that he realized that he had a talent for writing. Jacques' ancestry is French on the paternal side, and Irish on the maternal side; Jacques' grandmother came to Liverpool from Cork Country, Ireland, in 1895.

Illustration It's wonderful to know that there are so many of you out there enjoying my world of Redwall. Keep reading pals and I will keep writing just for you. Brian Jacques Brian Jacques is a true storyteller. He's at his best, rendering voices and accents of the characters he has created. He has set sixteen "good yarns" to paper (with many more to follow).
The stories are known as the "Redwall" series, because they centre around Redwall Abbey. The heroes are peace-loving mice, moles, shrews, squirrels, and their friends who exhibit human characteristics in a medieval setting. They face the dark side of the animal world, represented by rats, weasels, stoats, foxes, and their villain allies, in the day-to-day struggle of good versus evil, life versus death. The stories are written for young people aged nine to fifteen, but many "not-so-young" people also enjoy them. Redwall.org receives over million "page hits" a year. A CONVERSATION WITH BRIAN JACQUES What started you writing and when?
I have written for most of my life as a poet, songwriter, columnist for a newspaper and playwright for theatre, radio and television. My present writing form as author began when I had a desire to write a story for the children of a local school for the blind, The Royal Liverpool School in Wavertree, where I am a patron. I wanted to write something visual that I could read to the children. This was when I created the idea of Redwall Abbey in my imagination. As I wrote, the idea grew, and the manuscript along with it. I had no intention of sending the story for publication, but an old friend of mine, a retired English teacher called Alan Durband, read my manuscript and sent it off to a publisher without my knowledge. Fortunately, the publishers liked it and I have never looked back since.
What sort of books did you enjoy as a child and what do you like to read now?
My childhood reading was mainly books given or recommended to me by my father. He was a stern man and if he said "

"I sometimes think it ironic for an ex-seaman, longshoreman, truck driver, policeman, bus driver, etc...to find success writing children's novels."
Brian Jacques
New York Times bestselling author Brian Jacques (pronounced "jakes") was born in Liverpool, England on June 15th, 1939. Along with forty percent of the population of Liverpool, his ancestral roots are in Ireland, County Cork to be exact. He grew up in the area around the Liverpool docks. His interest in adventure stories began at an early age, as he read the works of Daniel Defoe, Sir Henry Rider Haggard, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Sir Thomas Malory, Robert Michael Ballantyne, Robert Louis Stevenson, and Edgar Rice Burroughs. One of his favorite tales is Kenneth Graham's Wind in the Willows Brian attended St. John's School, an inner city school with a playground on its roof. On his first day at St. John's, at the age of ten, he had an experience that marked his potential as a writer. Given an assignment to write a story about animals, he wrote about a bird that cleaned a crocodile's teeth. The teacher could not, and would not, believe that a ten-year-old could write as Brian had. Young Brian refused to falsely say that he had copied the story, and was caned as "a liar." Rather than be unsettled by his unjust punishment, Brian realized that he had always loved to write, and that he clearly had a talent for writing. Some teachers at St. John's proved to be good role models. As Brian recalls: "My favorite teacher was Mr. Austin Thomas. He looked like Lee Marvin. Big man. A captain in World War II. He came to school on a big push bike with the haversack on back. He was a man's man. Always fair. I was fourteen at the time when Mr. Thomas introduced the class to poetry and Greek literature. Because of him, I saved seven shillings and sixpence to buy

    Review
Redwall is an absorbing fantasy somewhat along the lines of Watership Down with shades of The Rats of NIMH Wind in the Willows and King Arthur sneaking in. When you hear that it's about mice and other woodlawn creatures defending a monastery against an outlaw band of rats, you may be less than overwhelmed with a desire to read it, let alone work with it in your classroom. Please take our word that it's very, very good. Each of us picked it up with trepidation, none of us being avid fantasy readers and yet we all give it an enthusiastic thumbs up. None of us could put it down once we'd started it and all of us cared a great deal about those characters and their exploits. We are delighted to know that it's part of a series with Mossflower , (Putnam, 1988 ISBN 0-399-21549-2) a prequel, and
