"They do say," Mr. Adams said to Old Man Warner, who stood next to him, "that over in the north village they're talking of giving up the lottery."
Old Man Warner snorted. "Pack of crazy fools," he said. "Listening to the young folks, nothing's good enough for them. Next thing you know, they'll be wanting to go back to living in caves, nobody work any more, live that way for a while. Used to be a saying about 'Lottery in June, corn be heavy soon.' First thing you know, we'd all be eating stewed chickweed and acorns.
"There's always been a lottery," he added petulantly.

Z Shirley Jackson Biography Shirley Jackson (December 14, 1919 - August 8, 1965) was an american author who wrote short stories and novels. Her most famous work is her short story "The Lottery", which combines a bucolic small-town-America setting with a horrific shock ending. The tone of most of her works is odd and macabre, with an impending sense of doom, often framed by very ordinary settings and characters.
Born in San Francisco, California, she graduated from Syracuse University in 1940. While a student there, she met future husband Stanley Edgar Hyman, who was to become a noted literary critic.
In addition to her novels, Jackson also wrote a children's novel, Nine Magic Wishes, available in an edition illustrated by her grandson Miles Hyman. She also wrote two humorous memoirs, Raising Demons and Life Among the Savages, about her marriage and the experience of bringing up four children. After her death, her husband released her final unfinished novel, Come Along With Me, containing several chapters of her final work as well as several rare short stories and three speeches given by Jackson in her writing seminars.
In 1996, a crate of unpublished stories was found in the barn behind Jackson's house. These stories were published in a collection titled Just an Ordinary Day.

The Lottery by Shirley Jackson (a book review)
Jump to Comments Now, I was expecting all the stories in the collection to be creepy, but except for one other story the collection was very tame, though for the most part, good.  None of the stories were very involved, many seemed just the outline of a possible book, sometimes just a short scene.  It gave me the impression of looking through a large novel and ramdomly reading certain passages instead of actual stories. 5 Comments Filed under Books Reviews

Paving Many New Paths All at Once Shirley Ann Jackson doesn't back down from a challenge that gets in the way of her effort to achieve a goal. It is this attitude that has resulted in her being labeled 'the first' to do something a seemingly endless number of times. She was the first black woman to earn a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the first black female American to earn a physics doctorate, the first black woman to be the president of a national science and engineering institute, and many other firsts. But what it took to get her to where she is today was not just demonstrating her abilities, but overcoming the challenge of all those people who wanted to see her fail. Born on August 5 th Once she got to MIT, however, she found that she was in an environment that was not entirely accepting of her because of the color of her skin. Some students would not sit next to her in class, she was sometimes shouted at and spat upon while walking on the street, she wasn't welcomed to study in study groups, and she wasn't taken seriously by her professors. But Shirley Ann knew she could succeed and she knew that because she was in the spotlight, her successes would be magnified along with her failures. If she ever did fail though, it was a rarity and soon everyone was aware of her ability and many came back, looking to her for help. And rather than laughing at them and being spiteful, she welcomed them and helped them with their work. She turned her enemies into her friends.

By example, she taught us the important insights we would need to face any situation we would encounter as adults. She taught us to respect others, and equally important, to respect ourselves. She taught us to give, as well as to receive, love.
She taught us about manners, courtesy and etiquette. She demonstrated for us, even
today, that you never stop learning, striving, and reaching for what you want to achieve. She has an endless supply of knowledge, giving, and love, which she so willingly shares with all of us.
We didn't always think that the lessons she taught us were important. We would now like to say, from the heart, "Thank You, Mom."

    The Lottery

    by Shirley Jackson
    Word Count: 3773
The morning of June 27th was clear and sunny, with the fresh warmth of a full-summer day; the flowers were blossoming profusely and the grass was richly green. The people of the village began to gather in the square, between the post office and the bank, around ten o'clock; in some towns there were so many people that the lottery took two days and had to be started on June 2th. but in this village, where there were only about three hundred people, the whole lottery took less than two hours, so it could begin at ten o'clock in the morning and still be through in time to allow the villagers to get home for noon dinner. The children assembled first, of course. School was recently over for the summer, and the feeling of liberty sat uneasily on most of them; they tended to gather together quietly for a while before they broke into boisterous play. and their talk was still of the classroom and the teacher, of books and reprimands. Bobby Martin had already stuffed his pockets full of stones, and the other boys soon followed his example, selecting the smoothest and roundest stones; Bobby and Harry Jones and Dickie Delacroix the villagers pronounced this name "Dellacroy"eventually made a great pile of stones in one corner of the square and guarded it against the raids of the other boys. The girls stood aside, talking among themselves, looking over their shoulders at rolled in the dust or clung to the hands of their older brothers or sisters.
