http://www.kutztown.edu/faculty/reagan/jackson.html In 1949, the Hymans moved to Westport, Connecticut. As usual she worked hard. Six of her stories were published in various magazines including "The New Mexico Quarterly Review", "Collier`s", and "The Reader`s Digest." A year later her second novel, "Hangsaman" was ready for publication. Critics, a "Time" magazine staffer and the writer of "The Yale Review", regarded this book as one of the outstanding books of the year. (Friedman, 29) During the 1950s, while her children were growing up, Jackson published at least forty-four short stories, six articles; two book-length family chronicles; one children`s nonfiction book; and four novels. Primary Works Secondary Criticism
"Until enough men are touched strongly enough by the horror of their ritualistic, irrational actions to reject the long-perverted ritual, to destroy the box completely-or to make, if necessary, a new one reflective of their conditions and needs of life-man will never free himself from his primitive nature and is ultimately doomed. Miss Jackson does not offer us much hope-they only talk of giving up the lottery in the north village....(107) Bibliography Carpenter, Lynette. Describing her as "a national treasure," the National Science Board selected Dr. Jackson as its 2007 recipient of the prestigious Vannevar Bush Award for "a lifetime of achievements in scientific research, education, and senior statesman-like contributions to public policy." Described by Time Magazine (2005) as "perhaps the ultimate role model for women in science," President Jackson has held senior leadership positions in government, industry, research, and academe. Since her arrival in 1999, Dr. Jackson has fostered an extraordinary renaissance at Rensselaer through the vision, development and implementation of The Rensselaer Plan, the Institute's strategic blueprint. This institutional transformation has included the hiring of more than 180 new faculty and a corresponding reduction in class size and student/faculty ratios; initiating and/or completing $600 million in new construction and renovation of facilities for research, teaching, and student life; a doubling of research awards; and innovations in curriculum, undergraduate research, and student life initiatives. President Jackson secured a $360 million unrestricted gift to the university (2001), launched the $1 billion Renaissance at Rensselaer Campaign (2004), and expanded the goal of the campaign to $1.4 billion (2006) when the initial goal was met earlier than anticipated.

THE INNOVATION ECONOMY WHAT'S AHEAD Voices Of Innovation: Shirley Ann Jackson President of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and president of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute since 1999. Is the U.S. losing students to other countries? We still are at the top of the heap. But other countries are really racing forward in terms of publications in the major prestigious journals, breakthroughs in certain areas like stem cell research, and production of new engineers and scientists. If you look at countries in Asia on an absolute numerical basis, they produce many more engineers per year. It's not just a question of where we are on an exact comparison today but on the basis of projecting ahead 10, 15, 20 years. If we don't increase support for basic research and if we don't develop our own talent while continuing to mine talent from around the world, then the question is, where will we be?

Women and Science: The Talent Imperative
Shirley Ann Jackson, Ph.D.
President, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Association for Women in Science
A National Conference for Women in the STEM Disciplines
Smith College, Northampton, Massachusetts Thursday, June 23, 2005 Thank you for inviting me to speak to this distinguished gathering of women scientists. Your presence here, this evening, is a continuing and sustaining affirmation that women do science and engineering. This spring, the National Academy of Sciences elected 19 new women members the largest number of women scientists ever selected for Academy membership in a single year. With their election, women's membership in the National Academy of Sciences rises to 187, or 9 percent of the academy's 2059 members. Seventy-two members are elected each year. Membership is considered one of the highest honors in American science. The Academy, a private organization, chartered by the United States Congress, to provide advice to policy makers, has signaled, in recent years, that it is interested in electing more diverse members. This naturally begs the question: Are the women and diverse scientists "out there?" The answer is: of course.

Dr. Shirley Jackson: Telecommunications Inventions
Dr. Shirley Jackson, a theoretical physicist and famous black inventor, has been credited with making many advances in science. She first developed an interest in science and mathematics during her childhood and conducted experiments and studies, such as those on the eating habits of honeybees. She followed this interest to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) where she received a bachelors, masters, and doctoral degree, all in the field of physics. In doing so she became the first African-American woman to acquire a Ph.D. from MIT.
Jackson started to conduct successful experiments in theoretical physics and then started to use her knowledge in physics to start making advances in telecommunications while working at Bell Laboratories. These inventions include developments in the portable fax, touch tone telephone, solar cell, and the fiber optic cables used to provide clarity in overseas telephone calls. She has also helped make possible Caller ID and Call Waiting. For more information on Dr. Shirley Jackson, refer to:

Shirley Jackson
Actress Maureen Stapleton reads Shirley Jackson's timeless short story, "The Lottery." The story takes place in a small town not unlike that inhabited by Jackson herself, who taught at Bennington, Vermont. The strength of this story lies in Jackson's ability to expose the unquestioned existence of evil in everyday life. When Jackson was asked about the meaning of this story, which was published in the 1940s, she replied, "Why, it's about the Jews, of course." In reality, the story goes much deeper than that to the root of human nature itself. Rebroadcast of HarperAudio is made possible by the Internet Multicasting Service and our sponsors.

Added by the EDUCAUSE Librarian Title: Shirley Ann Jackson, President of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and former Chair of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (ID: EDU0301) Author(s): Shirley A. Jackson (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute) Topics: Higher Education Marketplace Higher Education Transformation Leadership Origin: Presented at EDUCAUSE Annual Conferences Type: Presentations/Speeches Abstract: At the millennium's dawn, the United States is in a quiet crisis not well recognized or understood. A century of science discovery and engineering innovation has brought us unprecedented comfort, prosperity, and leadership. Yet, the forces which brought us to this zenith are eroding: the talent that it rests upon is not being replaced in sufficient numbers. Our future prosperity, our global preeminence, and even our homeland security could be jeopardized. We must ask, who will do the science in the 21st century? We must further ask, what is the role of higher education in addressing this critical issue? How must universities adapt to meet the changes occurring in science and technology, and in a world that is quickly and quietly catching up in the very areas we where have excelled in the past? Creative Quotations from . . . Shirley Jackson
(1919-1965) born on Dec 14 US novelist. "She wrote stories dealing with supernatural in everyday settings, for example, "The Lottery," 1949." It is only with the eyes open that a corporeal form returns, and assembles itself firmly around the hard core of sight."
"[L]et my reader who is puzzled by my awkward explanations close his eyes for no more than two minutes, and see if he does not find himself suddenly not a compact human being at all, but only a consciousness on a sea of sound and touch . . ." "The idea of a series of items, following one another docilely, forms the only possible reasonable approach to life if you have to live it with a home and a husband and children, none of whom would dream of following one another docilely." "It has long been my belief that in times of great stress, such as a 4-day vacation, the thin veneer of family wears off almost at once, and we are revealed in our true personalities." "February, when the days of winter seem endless and no amount of wistful recollecting can bring back any air of summer."
