Washington Irving bio detailed
By Andrew Welsh-Huggins, THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

fctAdTag("bigbox",MyGenericTagVar,1); Two centuries before blogs, standup comedy or "The Daily Show," there was "Salmagundi," a periodical of satire whose founders and contributors included the young man of letters Washington Irving. The publication, a mix of commentary, short essays, poems and fake advertising, was like nothing New York City had seen when it appeared in January 1807. It was neither newspaper nor pamphlet, full of silly gossip and occasionally stinging profiles, as close to a contemporary Mad magazine as anything else, according to Brian Jay Jones' new biography of Irving. Though the publication's 19th-century references can be lost on a modern reader, "Even today, the youthful cockiness and defiance - the sheer attitude - are still entertaining," Jones writes. Irving is best known today, if he is remembered by the general public at all, as the author of tales such as "Rip Van Winkle" and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." (Though it's questionable whether Irving would recognize the latter's reincarnation as a bloody Johnny Depp film.)

New bio on Washington Irving
Jan 17, 2008, 15:44 GMT Brian Jay Jones has written a new biography called Washington Irving: An American Original. According to a recent review in the AP, “The book is so detailed, and so obviously well-researched, that it may overwhelm the average reader interested in learning more about Irving.” Irving was highly well known in his day, known for works such as The Legend of Sleepy Hollow . He has since somewhat fallen into obscurity, since not many recall his name, the article mentions. According to the book description, “In brilliant, meticulous strokes, Brian Jay Jones renders Washington Irving in all his flawed splendor - someone who fretted about money and employment, sufferedfrom writer's block, and doggedly cultivated his reputation. Jones offers as never before a very human portrait of the often contrasting public and private lives of this true American original.” Arcade is the publisher and the full AP review can be found here

Washington Irving People - Washington Irving AUTHOR (1783 - 1859) Washington Irving was the son of a New York merchant, he was trained in law but gave it up for the family business. When it collapsed he turned to writing but also figured proximately in the diplomatic world. In England he was secretary to the American Embassy and then took up the post in Spain as Ambassador. In 1929 he journeyed from Seville to Granada and then took up residence in the Alhambra palace when it was in an abandoned state. In Spain he wrote " Chronicle of the Conquest of Granada " (1829) and his best known work " Tales of the Alhambra " which was first published in London in 1832 under the title " The Alhambra; a series of tales and sketches of the Moors and the Spaniards ". It weaves a series of stories around the folk with whom he shared his life there. Irving was largely responsible, along with the French writers of the same period, for the Romantic image of Al-Andalus which persists to this day. The book met with immediate success wherever it was published. A best seller of its day.

A father may turn his back on his child, brothers and sisters may become inveterate enemies, husbands may desert their wives, wives their husbands. But a mother's love endures through all; in good repute, in bad repute, in the face of the world's condemnation, a mother still loves on, and still hopes that her child may turn from his evil ways, and repent; still she remembers the infant smiles that once filled her bosom with rapture, the merry laugh, the joyful shout of his childhood, the opening promise of his youth; and she can never be brought to think him all unworthy.
