Washington Irving's Two Tales
Irving, Washington. Two Tales: Rip Van Wrinkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Illustrated by Barry Moser.
Perhaps I should be slightly embarrassed to admit this, but this was my first time actually reading both of these stories. My only familiarity with the stories coming through Wishbone in the first instance and a cartoon in the second. (I want to say Disney but I could be wrong.) So why now? Well, I is a difficult letter in the alphabet, AND I was desperate to read a book from the 1820s to complete my loop. Those two aren't great reasons to read a classic, but in all honesty, they were sufficient to motivate me at the library.
My impression of the book? Well, I enjoyed them both more than I thought I would. But that isn't necessarily saying much. The language is a bit archaic. Not desperately archaic. But without being *updated* I don't see many kids being able to read it smoothly. Even as a somewhat well-read, somewhat well-educated adult, there were words that in all honesty I had NO idea what they meant. And I would assume that like most readers, I was just too lazy to get up and get a dictionary so I just skimmed over them like they weren't even there. (To my credit, 11 at night isn't the best time to get up and go in search of a dictionary.) But I got the *main* ideas of both stories.

Early America: A Search for Freedom Washington Irving (1783-1859) John D. Anderson
Washington Irving was among the first generation born in the newly created United States of America. The year of his birth1783was also the year England officially recognized our new nation, ending the American Revolution. Irving was heir to the legacy of freedom won by the heroes of the war for American independence, a legacy that marked Irving's contemporaries as the first "lost" generation. With George Washington as their larger-than-life Founding Father, Irving's generation was unsure how to live up to his standard of achievement. Irving eventually earned the title of the "Father of American Literature," but his journey to that goal was fraught with anxiety. His was a search for freedom from not political oppression, but from the uncertainty of what to do with the freedom won by the founding fathers; his was a search for identity. This search consisted of three distinct phases. In the first phase, lasting until he was 33 years old, Irving's wealthy and indulgent family allowed him to drift casually through life. Irving, the youngest of eight children, was clearly the pet of the family. His father, William Irving, was a well-to-do merchant in New York City, a self-made Scotsman who had emigrated to America in 1763. An imaginative but sickly child, Irving was eventually groomed as a lawyer, but his real education took place on a grand tour of Europe in 1804-1806, in lieu of attending Columbia College as had his two older brothers, William and Peter. His adventures abroad included being attacked by pirates while en route to Sicily.

The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow Washington Irving (1783-1859)
Writer, called the "first American man of letters." He is best known for the short stories "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and "Rip Van Winkle."
The favourite and last of 11 children of an austere Presbyterian father and a genial Anglican mother, young, frail Irving grew up in an atmosphere of indulgence. He escaped a college education, which his father required of his older sons, but read intermittently at the law, notably in the office of Josiah Ogden Hoffman, with whose pretty daughter Matilda he early fell in love. He wrote a series of whimsically satirical essays over the signature of Jonathan Oldstyle, Gent., published in Peter Irving's newspaper, the Morning Chronicle, in 1802-03. He made several trips up the Hudson, another into Canada for his health, and took an extended tour of Europe in 1804-06.

Democratic Origins and Revolutionary Writers, 1776-1820: Washington Irving (1789-1859)
Index The youngest of 11 children born to a well-to-do New York merchant family, Washington Irving became a cultural and diplomatic ambassador to Europe, like Benjamin Franklin and Nathaniel Hawthorne . Despite his talent, he probably would not have become a full-time professional writer, given the lack of financial rewards, if a series of fortuitous incidents had not thrust writing as a profession upon him. Through friends, he was able to publish his Sketch Book The Sketch Book of Geoffrye Crayon (Irving's pseudonym) contains his two best remembered stories, "Rip Van Winkle" and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." "Sketch" aptly describes Irving's delicate, elegant, yet seemingly casual style, and "crayon" suggests his ability as a colorist or creator of rich, nuanced tones and emotional effects. In the Sketch Book , Irving transforms the Catskill Mountains along the Hudson River north of New York City into a fabulous, magical region.

40 Irving Place
Architect: C.B.J. Snyder
B esides the rowhouses and apartment buildings, the proposed historic district includes two institutional buildings and a single office building. The larger of the insitutional buildings is Washington Irving High School. This is a significant institution in the history of women's education in New York City. It is of additional importance for its exceptional Gothic-inspired public spaces and its extensive series of mural decorations (this interior is proposed for interior designation). The school that was to become Washington Irving was organized in 1902 as a branch of Wadleigh High School (at the time, the only girls' high school in Manhattan). Known initially as Girls' Technical High School, the institution was the idea of progressive educator William McAndrew, who believed that girls training for vocational or technical trades and those undertaking an academic curriculum should be educated together since they had much to teach each other. The school proved to be extremely successful, with classes held in five different buildings. The increasing enrollment justified the erection of a new building planned specifically for the needs of the diverse female student body. Land was purchased on Irving Place, opposite the building reputed to be associated with Washington Irving, and the name of the institution was changed to honor that great American author. In 1908, Superintendent of School buildings C.B.J. Snyder designed a seven-story brick, limestone, and terra-cotta structure with an imposing arched entrance, paired round-arched Florentine Renaissance windows on the seventh floor, a deep cornice, and a tiled hip roof. The building was to cost $600,000. Two years later the proposed building was enlarged with the addition of another story and a flat roof that would be available for recreation. Construction on the school began in 1911 and was completed in 1913.
