Irving, Washington, 1783-1859
Biographical note
Essayist and historian, born in New York, son of William Irving who had emigrated from Scotland. He was in his youth delicate, and his education was somewhat desultory, but his father had a fine library, of which he had the run, and he was an omnivorous reader. In 1799 he entered a law office, but a threatening of consumption led to his going, in 1804, on a European tour in search of health. On his return in 1806 he was admitted to the Bar. He did not, however, prosecute law, but joined his brothers in business as a sleeping partner, while he devoted himself to literature. In 1807 he conducted Salmagundi , an amusing miscellany, and in 1809 appeared A History of New York by Diedrich Knickerbocker , a burlesque upon the old Dutch settlers, which has become a classic in America. He made in 1815 a second visit to Europe, from which he did not return for 17 years. In England he was welcomed by Thomas Campbell, the poet, who introduced him to Scott, whom he visited at Abbotsford in 1817. The following year the firm with which he was connected failed, and he had to look to literature for a livelihood. He produced (1819), which was, through the influence of Scott, accepted by Murray, and had a great success on both sides of the Atlantic. In 1822 he went to Paris, where he began

Washington Irving
Washington Irving was born on April 3, 1783, the youngest of eleven children. During his early career, he studied law and travelled widely in Europe. He first began writing in journals and newspapers, and was editor of Analetic magazine from 1812 to 1814. Irving’s first book was a comic history of Dutch New York, which was published in 1809 under the pseudonym "Dietrich Knickerbocker", for which the Knickerbocker school of writers was later named. With the success of a collection of short stories, The Sketch Book Of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent., which included “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” and “Rip Van Winkle,” Irving was able to write full time; the sequel to the Sketch Book, Bracebridge Hall, appeared in 1822. During the years from 1815 to 1832, Irving lived in various places in Europe, where he met Mary Shelley and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and, while staying in Spain, wrote several historical books including two about Christopher Columbus. He returned to New York and was welcomed as the first American writer to receive international acclaim. He settled at Sunnyside manor in Tarrytown, where, except for his time serving as U.S. Ambassador to Spain, he spent the rest of his life. His later works include Mahomet and His Succesors and The Life of George Washington. He died on November 28, 1859, and was buried in Sleepy Hollow, NY.

A grand old man of American letters, Washington Irving created two famous characters: the sleepyhead Rip Van Winkle and the scarifying Headless Horseman from "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." Both appeared in the 1820 collection The Sketch Book, which Irving published under the pseudonym Geoffrey Crayon. The hit book made Irving the first American author to gain real fame in Europe. Late in life Irving wrote a colossal five-volume biography of George Washington , and his biography of Christopher Columbus is still considered a classic. Extra credit : Irving was named for George Washington; his parents were admirers of General Washington... From 1842-46, Irving served as U.S. ambassador to Spain... Irving is indirectly responsible for the name of the NBA's New York Knicks. Irving wrote A History of New York in 1809 under the pseudonym of Diedrich Knickerbocker; the term "Knickerbocker" came to mean anyone from New York.

The critical acceptance and enduring popularity of Irving's tales involving these characters proved the effectiveness of the short story as an American literary form. Born in New York City, Irving studied law at private schools. After serving in several law offices and traveling in Europe for his health from 1804 to 1806, he was eventually admitted to the bar in 1806. His interest in the law was neither deep nor long-lasting, however, and Irving began to contribute satirical essays and sketches to New York newspapers as early as 1802. A group of these pieces, written from 1802 to 1803 and collected under the title Letters of Jonathan Oldstyle, Gent.

Classroom Issues and Strategies
Students generally know the two short stories ("Rip" and "Sleepy Hollow"). With the selections from History , it is wise to avoid tipping off students in advance to Irving's attitude toward the treatment of Native Americans by European-Americans; see if they can penetrate through the technically sophisticated irony to Irving's scathing condemnation; some may be tempted to read the passage as approving the harsh treatment. (Note that, strictly speaking, the passage is concerned with Latin America, not America as a whole. But students can be asked whether it has relevance to North American policies relating to Indians.) Emphasize Irving's humor before getting too serious. Give students a chance to talk about what they find entertaining in the selections and why. Also, try comparing responses of male and female students to "Rip Van Winkle." How sympathetic are each to Rip? Look at the story as the first in a long line of texts by male American writers in which a male protagonist forsakes civilized community life for the wilderness (or the sea) on a quest of sorts and perhaps joins forces with a male companion(s). Consider the psychological or cultural significance of such narratives, as well as the role of and attitude toward women they portray.

    The Legacy of Washington Irving
Washington Irving, author of "Rip van Winkle" and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow," was America's first internationally acclaimed writer. In 1832, he accompanied Captain Jesse Bean and his U.S. Rangers on an adventurous trip through what is now central Oklahoma. He described this journey in A Tour on the Prairies , and his colorful account of Oklahoma before settlement provides a vivid description of the landscape before it was changed by encroaching civilization.

M IDDLETON. I T IS She is like some tender tree, the pride and beauty of the grove; graceful in its form, bright in its foliage, but with the worm preying at its heart. We find it suddenly withering, when it should be most fresh and luxuriant. We see it drooping its branches to the earth, and shedding leaf by leaf, until, wasted and perished away, it falls even in the stillness of the forest; and as we muse over the beautiful ruin, we strive in vain to recollect the blast or thunderbolt that could have smitten it with decay. I have seen many instances of women running to waste and self-neglect, and disappearing gradually from the earth, almost as if they had been exhaled to heaven; and have repeatedly fancied that I could trace their deaths through the various declensions of consumption, cold, debility, languor, melancholy, until I reached the first symptom of disappointed love. But an instance of the kind was lately told to me; the circumstances are well known in the country where they happened, and I shall but give them in the manner in which they were related. He took her with him to Sicily, hoping that a change of scene might wear out the remembrance of early woes. She was an amiable and exemplary wife, and made an effort to be a happy one; but nothing could cure the silent and devouring melancholy that had entered into her very soul. She wasted away in a slow, but hopeless decline, and at length sunk into the grave, the victim of a broken heart.
