(Yet) A(nother) Defense of the MFA
Ah, the MFA program, whipping-boy of higher education. It seems that the more popular they become, the more satisfaction people get from disapproving of them. (MFA programs, Wicca, and Harry Potter should start a support group.) The essence of the argument against MFA programs can essentially be boiled down to this: MFA programs are discouraging creativity and negatively impacting American literature by promoting boring, conventional writing through an overabundance of rules and constraints. Well, a recent argument on Jane Awake and a not-so-recent flame war on The Creative Writing MFA Handbook blog, Let’s tackle the myths one by one, shall we? 1. Programs tend to quash unique voices and encourage conformity. 2. MFA Programs try to teach you how to write, which can’t be done. Furthermore, even when professors do offer guidelines on what makes a story effective, the understanding (if they don’t say it outright at the beginning of the semester or class session) is that students are allowed - often even encouraged - to disagree. You will never hear a competant professor claim that it must always be done their way. Now, this is not to suggest that all creative writing professors are perfect all the time. I remember one class session in which a professor began insisting that a story wouldn’t be publishable until a certain scene was written in one specific way. But isolated problems in other fields don’t lead to a general dismissal of that entire field. I’d appreciate it if writing were awarded the same respect.

Dear Reader, Ink Isn't Just For Printer Cartridges Anymore Authors With Tattooes
Abebooks.com

Guess who among the following writers has at least one tattoo (or had at least one tattoo while they were alive)?
a. George Orwell
b. Dorothy Parker
c. John Irving
d. Karen Joy Fowler
e. none of the above
f. all of the above
(Okay, astute writers will know that including f as an option completely gives it away as the answer.)
Yes, believe it or not, all of these authors have imprinted ink images into their skin. And they aren't tattooes of words. They're pictures. That surprises me. If I were to have a tattoo...well, maybe it's not so surprising that a writer should choose an image over a word. There are just too many words one could pick from. We all have our own idiosyncratic writerly vocabs, after all. But if I were to choose a word, I think I could have KAFKAESQUE embossed in a typewriter-style font on my ankle without thinking too much about it. It's the same magnetic poetry word sticking to the metal shade on my office lamp. I keep thinking I've lost the darned thing and then it shows up somewhere surprising, so I suppose that should mean something. As for images, I think an old fashioned quill pen would look nice, don't you?

Karen Horney and Character Disorder
Excerpts from Karen Horney and Character Disorder by Irving Solomon: Karen Horney's (1950) theory of neurosis, really character disorders , recognizes the influence of culture while viewing neurosis as a constellation of defenses designed to deal with basic anxiety . She concentrates on character structure rather than early childhood psychosexual experiences. Neurosis for Horney is essentially a character disorder a way of life in which the patient is compulsively driven by conflicting " shoulds claims idealized images alienation from the self and implicit and/or explicit self-hate " (pg. 109). "Horney (1950) presents three major character structures or trends and their accompanying solutions
  • Moving toward people and the solution of compliance and self-effacement
  • Moving against people and the solution of aggression and expansiveness
  • Moving away from people and the solution of detachment or freedom.
"In my clinical experience, seldom does a patient display exclusively one solution; rather most patients indicate a mixture of all major trends" (pg. 110). "The idealized self is a compensation for feelings of weakness and inadequacy. The consequences flowing from the idealized self are either a conviction of arrogance and omnipotence or a despised
