Joan's Crusade. Eventually, that stirred up more dust than the Hollywood movies (including All Quiet on the Western Front), which used the ranch as a favorite location. Lissome blonde Granddaughter Joan Irvine, now 34 and in her fourth marriage, took up J.I.'s manner, if not his mind. Beginning in 1957, she used her 20% stockholding to launch a series of court and boardroom broadsides against the "old bozos" in the foundation, sniping at the ranch's $800,000 annual dividend as peanuts and charging mismanagement. The range war deepened in 1959, when Myford Irvine, Joan's uncle and J.I.'s successor, was discovered in the mansion basement, dead of two shotgun wounds in the stomach and a bullet in the head—a mysterious case that was officially ruled a suicide. Irvine's board finally caved in to Joan's crusade, in 1960 hired Planner Pereira to map out his development program. Not that Joan now considers the West won. Hired on as a neutral non-family company president in 1960, former Navy Secretary (under Eisenhower) and TWA President (under Howard Hughes) Charles Thomas soon likened his job to facing "crossed swords." Even now, Joan has another antifoundation suit pending in court. William R. Mason, an engineer who succeeded Thomas in 1966, can say with some authority that "to my knowledge, there is no land program in the country which compares with what we have under way here."

  • No Sew Fleece pillows

  • Instructions can be found on the web for this pillow, which is made by cutting fringe and tying the two pieces together. Making an 18" x 18" pillow means you can usually make three pillows from 60" wide fleece. Stuff with fiberfill and use scraps of materials to decorate and make animal or monster pillows.
  • Paper curling or quillery

  • As art work on its own or to decorate something else.
  • String Art Pictures

  • Use dot to dot pictures or make your own to make the pattern. Copy on to tracing paper. For the base use the cardboard or Styrofoam that come in all the boxes of books that libraries get. You may need to glue 2 pieces together for enough thickness. You may want to cover with black paper or another color of your choice to fit your design. Place tracing paper pattern on base. Use 5/8 inch nails. Place where the dots are. Tear the tracing paper off the base. Use thread or interesting yarn to create the picture. You may want to add extra nails as you work your design.
  • Felt or Paper Beads

  • See Tina Casey's book on the bibliography. We made beads from animal print felt.

French Immersion II Recommended Non-Fiction for Canadian Schools
    by Diane Melanson
    Volume 22 Number 2
    1994 March/April
From ladybird beetles to ecosystems, from science activities to maple syrup, from hockey to Armand Bombardier, it's all here, all in French. In January 1991 CM published what has proved to be our most popular feature bibliography, "French Immersion: Annotated Bibliography of Recommended Canadian Books" compiled by Irene Aubrey. The focus of that bibliography was French-language picturebooks and fiction published in Canada. This month, we are featuring a complementary bibliography of French-language non-fiction material recommended for French Immersion elementary classrooms and libraries. The bibliography is organized by subject/series and reading level. I am indebted to CM Editorial Board member Patricia Cooper, who asked Diane Melanson to compile this bibliography for CM. Ed. Before teaching this lesson, make certain that all of your Web sites are bookmarked on all of the computers in your classroom, and that all of the necessary links are still valid and running. Make sure that each lab station has all of the necessary components already in place for the start of the lesson. Place all handouts and pencils needed for this lesson on each of the students' desks before class begins. CUE the videotape to the visual cue of the Johannesburg skyline right after the map highlighting Lesotho and Johannesburg.
When using media, provide students with a FOCUS FOR MEDIA INTERACTION , a specific task to complete and/or information to identify during or after viewing a video segment, Web site, or other multimedia presentations.
    Step 1:
Explain to your students that many of the things that they take for granted in their lives have come at some cost to others. Many of the roles that women play in today's society have only come about because one woman was strong enough, brave enough, smart enough, or willing enough to make a personal sacrifice for what she believed in. Despite what we see on a daily basis, there are still regions in the world where women are still trying to achieve the same status and position in their societies that many in the United States take for granted. Some cultures, religions, and governments believe that women cannot and should not have the same rights and freedoms as their sisters in other countries or the men in their own. With that in mind, they are going to take a look at some famous women in history and see just what they know.
