Er wurde 1909 (und nicht, wie h¤ufig zu finden, 1912) unter dem Namen Eugen Ionescu im damaligen K¶nigreich Rum¤nien als erstes Kind eines Juristen und Verwaltungsbeamten und der in Rum¤nien aufgewachsenen Tochter eines dort t¤tigen franz¶sischen Eisenbahningenieurs geboren. 1913 ging die junge Familie nach Paris, weil der Vater dort promovieren wollte. Als 1916 Deutschland und –sterreich Rum¤nien den Krieg erkl¤rten, kehrte der Vater zur¼ck in sein Heimatland, wo er sehr rasch alle Verbindungen zu seiner Familie kappte, die Scheidung beantragte und wieder heiratete. Der inzwischen sechsj¤hrige Ionesco blieb in Paris, zusammen mit seiner j¼ngeren Schwester und seiner Mutter, die sich und die Kinder m¼hsam mit Gelegenheitsarbeiten und Zuwendungen ihrer franz¶sischen Verwandten ern¤hrte. Er wurde, damit die Mutter arbeiten konnte, in ein Kinderheim gesteckt, in dem er sich aber nicht eingew¶hnen konnte. Die Jahre 1917-19 lebten er und seine Schwester bei einer Bauernfamilie in einem Dorf, La Chapelle-Athenaise, nahe

Born Eugen Ionescu in Slatina, Ionesco spent his childhood in Paris but returned to Romania at the age of 13. He taught French in Bucharest before returning to Paris in 1939 to write. His plays depict the ridiculous, futile existence of humans in an unpredictable universe, who, because of their innate limitations, cannot communicate with one another. This pessimistic philosophy became a tenet of the theater of the absurd, a movement in French and English theater that lamented the senselessness of the human condition. Although Ionesco's intent was serious, his plays are rich in humor. Avant-garde, chiefly one-act works, they employ stifling, meaningless language and illogical, isolating situations to emphasize human incapabilities. La cantatrice chauve (1950; translated as

Ionesco nacque a Slatina, in Romania, nel 1909 il 13 novembre secondo il calendario ortodosso, il 26 per quello gregoriano . L'anno seguente si trasfer¬ con i genitori a Parigi , dove ben presto fece esperienza della guerra. Le immagini atroci e confuse di questo periodo impressionarono a tal punto il piccolo Eug¨ne da tornare ricorrentemente nelle sue opere.

Al termine della guerra, Ionesco si trasfer¬ con la sorella nel piccolo villaggio Chapelle-Anthenaise , nella Mayenne . Questo soggiorno fu pervaso di serenit  e tranquillit : i ricordi chiari e affettuosi. Tornato a Parigi , Ionesco scrisse la sua prima pi¨ce : un dramma patriottico.
