Ibsen was born on March 20, 1828, and schooled in Skien. He briefly assisted an apothecary and began medical studies before beginning a lifetime association with the theater. He was stage manager-playwright at the National Theater at Bergen from 1851 to 1857 and later director of the theater at Christiania (now Oslo) from 1857 to 1862. During these years of practical theater work he wrote his first plays. From 1863 to 1891 Ibsen lived chiefly in Italy and Germany. He subsisted first on a traveling scholarship and later on an annual pension, granted by the Storting, the Norwegian parliament. In 1891 he returned to Christiania; he died there May 23, 1906. Ibsen's early work included two verse dramas. The first

Ibsen published his first play, Catilina a tragedy in verse in 1850. As stage manager and playwright with the National Stage in Bergen, and 'later artistic director of the Norwegian Theatre in Oslo, he had a chance to develop his gifts as a writer. His early work celebrated the past glories of his country. Love's Comedy , a satirical verse play on contemporary life, was the first work to show another side to Ibsen's character. Produced while he was at the Norwegian Theatre, it was followed by The Pretender in 1863; the same year that a travelling fellowship removed most of his financial worries: Two years later the masterpiece Brand was produced and shortly after, he left Norway, spending the better part of his life in Italy and Germany; where he wrote the bulk of his plays. Brand — the tragedy of a supreme idealist — established Ibsen as a major European playwright. Peer Gynt (1867) was his last verse play, and with its completion, he moved from the realm of folklore, historical themes and romantic pageantry into the field of social realism, for which he is perhaps most widely known:

IN a letter to George Brandes, shortly after the Paris Commune, Henrik Ibsen wrote concerning the State and political liberty: "The State is the curse of the individual. How has the national strength of Prussia been purchased? By the sinking of the individual in a political and geographical formula. . . . The State must go! That will be a revolution which will find me on its side. Undermine the idea of the State, set up in its place spontaneous action, and the idea that spiritual relationship is the only thing that makes for unity, and you will start the elements of a liberty which will be something worth possessing." The State was not the only of Henrik Ibsen. Every other institution which, like the State, rests upon a lie, was an iniquity to him. Uncompromising demolisher of all false idols and dynamiter of all social shams and hypocrisy, Ibsen consistently strove to uproot every stone of our social structure. Above all did he thunder his fiery indictment against the four cardinal sins of modern society: the Lie inherent in our social arrangements; Sacrifice and Duty, the twin curses that fetter the spirit of man; the narrow-mindedness and pettiness of Provincialism, that stifles all growth; and the Lack of Joy and Purpose in Work which turns life into a vale of misery and tears. So strongly did Ibsen feel on these matters, that in none of his works did he lose sight of them. Indeed, they recur again and again, like a

A thousand words will not leave so deep an impression as one deed. Deeds Deprive the average human being of his life-lie, and you rob him of his happiness. Happiness Each bird must sing with his own throat. Birds Home life ceases to be free and beautiful as soon as it is founded on borrowing and debt. Home Look into any man's heart you please, and you will always find, in every one, at least one black spot which he has to keep concealed. Secrecy Oh, life would be all right if we didn't have to put up with these damned creditors who keep pestering us with the demands of their ideals. Creditors Rob the average man of his life-illusion and you rob him also of his happiness.

Biographical note
Influential Norwegian playwright who was largely responsible for the decline of the Victorian drama and the rise of the Modern. His plays were considered scandalous in much of society at the time, when Victorian values of family life and propriety were still very much the norm, and any challenge to them considered immoral and outrageous. Ibsen's work examined the realities that lay behind many a facade, which the society of the time did not want to see. More ...

A Doll's House:
There can be no freedom or beauty about a home life that depends on borrowing and debt. It's a sweet little bird, but it gets through a terrible amount of money. You wouldn't believe how much it costs a man when he's got a little song-bird like you! What's to become of the morally sound? Left out in the cold, I suppose. We must heal the sick. Yes some day, perhaps, after many years, when I am no longer as pretty as I am now. Don't laugh at me! I mean, of course, when Torvald is no longer as devoted to me as he is now; when my dancing and dressing-up and reciting have palled on him then it may be a good thing to have something in reserve. Your squirrel would run about and do all her tricks if you would be nice, and do as she wants. Many a man can save himself if he admits he's done wrong and takes his punishment. Hasn't a daughter the right to protect her dying father from worry and anxiety? Hasn't a wife the right to save her husband's life? I don't know much about the law, but I'm quite certain that it must say somewhere that things like that are allowed. An atmosphere of lies like that infects and poisons the whole life of a home. In a house like that, every breath that the children take is filled with the germs of evil.

Ibsen's plays contained ideas ahead of their time. In A Doll's House , women's emancipation was championed; in Ghosts , peoples' inability to escape their past was explored and in Hedda Gabler the pressures of society on bourgeoisie women of the time are examined.
His plays were realistic, but made use of symbolism to convey their themes.

Norwegian playwright, one of "the four great ones" with Alexander Kielland, Jonas Lie and Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson of the 19th-century Norwegian literature. Ibsen is generally acknowledged as the founder of modern prose drama. He moved away from the Romantic style, unmasking the romantic hero, and brought the problems and ideas of the day onto his stage.
