Henrik Johan Ibsen March 20 May 23 ) was a major Norwegian playwright largely responsible for the rise of modern realistic drama . He is often referred to as the "father of modern drama." Ibsen is held to be the greatest of Norwegian authors and one of the most important playwrights of all time, celebrated as a national symbol by Norwegians. His plays were considered scandalous to many of his era, when Victorian values of family life and propriety largely held sway in Europe and any challenge to them was considered immoral and outrageous. Ibsen's work examined the realities that lay behind many facades, possessing a revelatory nature that was disquieting to many contemporaries. Ibsen largely founded the modern stage by introducing a critical eye and free inquiry into the conditions of life and issues of morality . Victorian-era plays were expected to be moral dramas with noble protagonists pitted against darker forces; every drama was expected to result in a morally appropriate conclusion, meaning that goodness was to bring happiness, and immorality pain. Ibsen challenged this notion and the beliefs of his times and shattered the illusions of his audiences.

Biography of Henrik Ibsen (1828-1906)
Henrik Ibsen Leaving his family, Ibsen traveled to Grimstad, a small, isolated town, to begin his apprenticeship. He maintained a strong desire to gain admission to the University to study medicine, and also fathered an illegitimate son with the servant of the apothecary. Despite his unhappy lot, Ibsen began to write in earnest in Grimstad. Inspired by the revolution of 1848, Ibsen wrote satire and elegant poetry. At the age of twenty-one, Ibsen left Grimstad for the capital. While in Christiania (now Oslo), Ibsen passed his exams but opted not to pursue his education, instead turning to playwriting and journalism. It was in Christiania that he penned his first play, Cataline . Ibsen also spent time analyzing and criticizing modern Norwegian literature. Still poor, Ibsen gladly accepted a contract to write for and help manage the newly constituted National Theater in Bergen in 1851. Untrained and largely uneducated, Ibsen learned much from his time at the theater, producing such works as St. John's Night

Henrik Ibsen's plays anticipate major developments of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries
  • the individual's feelings of alienation and actual alienation from society, the pressures by which society insures conformity to its values and suppresses individuality, the barriers which modern life sets up against living heroically.
Ibsen exposed other stresses of modern life by showing the inner pressures and conflicts that inhibit and even destroy the individual. Some of these pressures stem from conditioning, i.e., from the individual's internalizing society's values. John Northam distinguishes the opposing elements within the individual as the social self and the essential self . The social self is the persona which conforms to the demands of family, friends, community, and society and which an individual generally develops for acceptance or as a protection. The essential self is an individual's true Self and expresses the individual's thoughts, feelings, desires, needs, etc. This distinction, which is a useful concept in general, has particular relevance to Hedda Gabler ; I will refer to it repeatedly in our discussions of the play.

Henrik Ibsen
Henrik Ibsen was born in Skien, Norway in 1828. Ibsen's first forty years were a battle against poverty and failure. Although born into a wealthy family, by the time Henrik was six, his father Knud Ibsen was made bankrupt and the family were forced to move from Skien to a farm. Henrik Ibsen, although the oldest child, was often teased and became a solitary character. He was to base characters from his dramas on certain members of his family. Daniel Heljre in The League of Youth was modelled on his father, whilst the heroine of The Wild Duck took her name from Hedwig, his sister and the only member of his family he felt close to. Henrik Ibsen, who wanted to be a doctor, spent six miserable years as an apprentice to an apothecary in Grimstad, and he also ended up paying many years maintenance after getting pregnant a servant ten years his senior. Henrik Ibsen started to write poems and plays. Cataline was his first full length play. It was written in verse and was published in 1850. Ibsen left Grimstad for the University of Kristiania and hoped that his writing would earn him an income. However Cataline did not sell and he continued to struggle; and meanwhile he failed his Greek and Mathematics exams.

Executive summary: Peer Gynt In the same year he published his first work, the blank verse tragedy of Catilina , under the pseudonym Brynjolf Bjarme. A second drama, The Viking's Barrow , which was produced in 1855; and printed at Christiania in 1857; here are already perceptible some qualities of his mature character. Much less significant, although at the time more successful, is The Feast at Solhaug , a tragedy produced in Bergen in 1856; here for a moment Ibsen abandoned his own nascent manner for an imitation of the popular romantic dramatist of Denmark, Henrik Hertz. It is noticeable that Ibsen, by far the most original of modern writers for the stage, was remarkably slow in discovering the true bent of his genius. His next dramatic work was the romantic tragedy of Olaf Liljekrans , performed in 1857, but unprinted until 1898. This was the last play Ibsen wrote in Bergen. In the summer of the former year his five years' appointment came to an end, and he returned to Christiania.

Henrik Ibsen (1828-1906) Norwegian playwright, one of "the four great ones" with Alexander Kielland Jonas Lie and of the 19th-century Norwegian literature. Ibsen is generally acknowledged as the founder of modern prose drama. He moved away from the Romantic style, and brought the problems and ideas of the day onto the stage of his time. "... And what does it mean, then to be a poet? It was a long time before I realized that to be a poet means essentially to see, but mark well, to see in such a way that whatever is seen is perceived by the audience just as the poet saw it. But only what has been lived through can be seen in that way and accepted in that way. And the secret of modern literature lies precisely in this matter of experiences that are lived through. All that I have written these last ten years, I have lived through spiritually." ('Speech to the Norwegian Students, September 10, 1874, from

HENRIK IBSEN (1828-1906) This often misunderstood Norwegian playwright once remarked, "With pleasure I will torpedo the ark." As a young writer, he was discontent with everything. He found himself unable to identify with any existing forms of drama, so Henrik Ibsen set out to create his own. Along the way, Ibsen experienced multiple shifts in dramatic form and philosophy as he gradually came to terms with the intellectual, emotional, and spiritual forces that were at war within his complex psyche. But throughout, his plays are characterized by their rebellious spirit and their unforgiving scrutiny of Ibsen's own faults and virtues. Ibsen's early plays are wild and epic, utilizing an open form and concentrating on mystical, romantic, poetic visions of the rebel figure in search of an ultimate truth which is always just out of reach. In Brand revolts against God, howling at the heavens, like Prometheus, only to be punished with a huge avalanche which buries him alive. In Peer Gynt a young man rebels against society by choosing to live a life of waste, only to find himself, ultimately, living in a world of lost opportunities. Emperor and Galilean traces the life of the fourth-century Roman Emperor Julian, a disenchanted youth who seeks out a variety of religious experiences in a search for beauty and truth, but eventually, after failing to find contentment, devotes himself to overthrowing the stage religion of Christianity.

HENRIK IBSEN (1828-1906) This article was originally published in A Short History of the Drama IN the entire history of literature, there are few figures like Ibsen. Practically his whole life and energies were devoted to the theater; and his offerings, medicinal and bitter, have changed the history of the stage. The story of his life his birth March 20, 1828, in the little Norwegian village of Skien, the change in family circumstances from prosperity to poverty when the boy was eight years old, his studious and non-athletic boyhood, his apprenticeship to an apothecary in Grimstad, and his early attempts at dramatic composition all these items are well known. His spare hours were spent in preparation for entrance to Christiania University, where, at about the age of twenty, he formed a friendship with Björnson. About 1851 the violinist Ole Bull gave Ibsen the position of "theater poet" at the newly built National Theater in Bergen a post which he held for six years. In 1857 he became director of the Norwegian Theater in Christiania; and in 1862, with Love's Comedy , became known in his own country as a playwright of promise. Seven years later, discouraged with the reception given to his work and out of sympathy with the social and intellectual ideals of his country, he left Norway, not to return for a period of nearly thirty years. He established himself first at Rome, later in Munich. Late in life he returned to Christiania, where he died May 23, 1906.
